3 Obtain StudyMate Author 2.5 software 1. Contact the ITS Service Desk at or to obtain the activation code. Each individual faculty member must do this. 2. Go to ecampus.wvu.edu 3. Look for the Instructional Tools module. 4. Click on the link for StudyMate Author. 5. Click on the link to download the software. to 6. Pay attention to where you put this file (e.g., desktop or downloads folder). 7. Open or double click on the downloaded file to begin software installation. Intro to StudyMate Author 3

4 Installation Wizard Follow the instructions on each step of the wizard. To begin, click on the Next button. You must accept the terms of the license agreement. Click on Next. 4 WVU Information Technology Services

5 You can choose the folder location for the software to be installed Click on Next. You can choose where you wish your StudyMate projects to be saved: Click on the Change button if you wish to change from the default selection. Click on Next to continue. Click on the Install button if you are ready to install the software: Intro to StudyMate Author 5

6 Choose Yes or No for the Respondus Equation Editor. If you had installed it as part of installing Respondus or if you never use an equation editor, click on No. Click on the Finish button to exit the StudyMate Software Author Installation Wizard. Start up the StudyMate Author software. You will be prompted to supply: Institution Name (enter exactly): West Virginia University Local Support Contact: ITS Service Desk Installation Password: enter / paste code received from the ITS Service Desk 6 WVU Information Technology Services

7 Create a New StudyMate File Under the Start tab, click on Open or Create on the left side: Click on the Create button. You will see: The file name and the file description are the only required fields. Click on OK when you are ready. Intro to StudyMate Author 7

8 Creating Questions Under the Edit tab, select the type of question you would like to ask. Complete the form to create the question. Fact One Answer: 8 WVU Information Technology Services

9 Multiple Choice: For a multiple choice question, you can supply up to ten possible answers. In item 4, specify which choice has the correct answer. For any of these types of questions, you can specify a level of difficulty (1=low, 5=high) and can assign a topic to a question (can create new topics on the fly). For any of these types of questions, save the question by clicking on Add to End of List or Insert into List. You can preview your question while you are creating it or later by clicking on the Preview button. Intro to StudyMate Author 9

10 Calculated Question Type: You can click on Variable Properties to control values of the variables in your question: You can click on the Value/Answer Sets button to review the sets of answers in case there are any that you wish to manually change. 10 WVU Information Technology Services

11 Settings Tab Choose the type of question that you need to change or verify the settings for. Intro to StudyMate Author 11

12 You can choose a color scheme for your final Flash object. Choose Other Settings from the list of settings and select a color set from the list: Child 1 and Child 2 use bright colors such as yellow and lime green. Preview and Publish Tab You should perform a final preview with the current settings. 12 WVU Information Technology Services

13 You can practice answering the questions, review the color scheme, edit the items to correct errors or typos, or delete a question. Click on Next Question to move on. Click on OK when you are done. Publish Your StudyMate File as a Flash Object Under the Preview and Publish tab, choose Publish from the list on the left. Click on the Publish button. 14 Select the activities you wish to include and click on Next. Publish Learning Activities to WVU ecampus To publish to your ecampus course section, choose Publish to Learning Management System. Choose Blackboard Learn 9.x as your learning system. Click on Next. Choose Standard Upload if you wish to tie this project to a studymate.com account. This will be most flexible for phone and table users. You can set up an account or register an existing one here. 14 WVU Information Technology Services

15 Click on Add New Server If prompted, select "Yes, check for pre-configured server settings" Choose WVU New ecampus from the drop down list. Supply a name for the server such as WVU ecampus. Enter your login information. Run the connection test. Intro to StudyMate Author 15

16 You can check the box to remember your login information if you are working on your own computer to save you from having to login each time you wish to upload to ecampus. Click on Next. Click on Next. 16 WVU Information Technology Services

17 Click on OK. You should see something like: Click on Next. You are now prompted to choose the course section After you select the appropriate course section, choose the folder organizer page or learning module to contain the activities. Click on Next. Enter a title and any additional text to appear below the title. You can also supply a title for the activity itself, where applicable. Intro to StudyMate Author 17

18 Click on Next. When it is done, the status window will display the results of your publishing: Click on Finish. You can now go to your ecampus course and preview how it will look to your students. External to WVU ecampus Another option is to publish the materials to HTML + SWF. You would do this if you wanted to upload these files onto a different web server instead of WVU ecampus. 18 WVU Information Technology Services

19 Click on Next. Supply a title for the HTML page plus any additional optional text or directions. Choose an activity title if applicable. Click on the Save As button and select a location to hold the flash movie file. Supply a name for the movie that doesn't have any special characters or blanks. Click on the Save button. 20 Click on the Finish button at the bottom. You will see: When you preview the page in your browser, you might see something like: Click on Allow Blocked Content. Import Content from Other Sources Go to the Start tab and click on the Import Wizard button: 20 WVU Information Technology Services

21 Choose the type of file you wish to import. Word and text documents have to be in a specific format 1. Click on Next. Importing Questions from Document or Text File. Choose what type of items will be imported from the file. Click on Next. 1 A sample format will be described later in this document. Intro to StudyMate Author 21

22 You will see a sample of what the desired format is: Click on Next. Answer the questions on the next wizard dialog box: Click on the Preview button to check for any problems you might need to edit or delete questions after the import is finished: Click on Finish 22 WVU Information Technology Services

23 You will see: Importing Questions from Respondus Select Respondus from the list of choices under the Start tab > Open > Import Wizard The next wizard screen is the same as it was for the.doc or.txt file import: Click on Browse and search for and select the desired respondus file (.rsp): Click on Open. 24 Answer the remaining questions. Click on the Preview button. You will get a chance to set your preferences: Click on OK when you are done. You will see: Click on OK. Click on Finish. 24 WVU Information Technology Services

25 Sample Standard File Format for importing questions from Word documents and text file. If the question is not multiple choice, you start with the question type (S=short answer, MT= matching, P=paragraph). Then specify a unique question title, followed by the question number and right parenthesis or period, then the question text then a list of response(s). Put an asterisk in front of the correct answer for multiple choice questions. Optional feedback is preceded with sign. 26 Editing Questions After you have created or imported your questions, you can modify them or rearrange the order of them. While you have the file open, click on the Edit tab. Click on a question number from the item list. You willl see: 26 WVU Information Technology Services

27 Click on Move if you want to move the item up or down in the list of questions. Type in a question number or choose to put it at the end of the list and click on OK. Click on Modify if you wish to change the question text or any of the responses. You will see a screen as you did if you created a question from scratch: Notice that you have a toolbar that has some additional features you can make text bold or italics, you can insert an equation or image or web link or superscripted text, or you can invoke the Power Edit feature to allow you to insert a table. Left to right: Save, Spell Check, Cut, Copy, Paste, Bold, Italics, Underline, Subscript, Superscript Equation Editor, Insert Audio, Insert Image, Insert Web Link, Switch to Power Edit You cannot insert a web link AND an image on the same question.
