1 R03-Moving Assessments Using Respondus Blackboard Learn: Respondus This handout contains the exact same information as the corresponding Blackboard Learn Respondus videos which are available at Moving Assessments Using Respondus Step-by-step Respondus allows the transfer of assessments from Blackboard Vista to Blackboard Learn. Also, assessments can be built in Respondus independently and then uploaded to Learn as well. This tutorial will demonstrate how to move assessments using the Respondus software. To get started, go to Blackboard Vista and view an assessment that you would like to move to Blackboard Learn. It s important to review assessment content before transferring it to a new system, in order to better identify question items that may be outdated and/or no longer relevant. For this tutorial, the screenshot below shows a typical assessment in Vista. Open Respondus and confirm that the Current Personality dropdown is set to WebCT Vista/CE 8.x. Now, click the Retrieval & Reports tab, and then click on the Retrieve Questions button on the left of the window. ITaP Training Page 1

2 Now we are ready to retrieve the assessment from Vista. Click the Vista Server dropdown and choose the option that identifies the server information that was saved. For this tutorial, the option labeled Blackboard Vista Server is used, though your settings may have been labeled differently. Once the option is clicked, the Edit Existing Server Settings dialog box will appear. Make sure the radio button next to Use current settings for Blackboard Vista Server is selected and then click the Next button. ITaP Training Page 2

3 The dialog box will disappear and the Retrieve Questions screen is shown. First, click the Group or Section dropdown and select the course that contains the assessments you wish to move. For this tutorial, an example course is shown and selected. Now, there are two options when it comes to moving assessments in Respondus. You can click the Quiz/survey/self-test option to select an individual assessment. Otherwise, you can click the Category option to select a pool of questions, which are shared among many assessments. For this tutorial, the Quiz/survey/self-test option is used. Lastly, type a name to label the downloaded content. Then, click the Retrieve button. When the Status message changes to Completed, a popup window will appear that says the file has been saved. Click the OK button. ITaP Training Page 3

4 Now click the Start tab in the top left of the window. Change the Current Personality to Blackboard 7.x-9.x. A popup window will appear. It explains the file previously saved was from a different CMS (Vista) and by clicking the Ok button it will be converted to the CMS option just selected (Learn). Go ahead and click the OK button. The Converting Between CMS Personalities dialog box appears. The changes Respondus applies to questions to make them compatible with other CMS is shown here. Click the Replace Current File to convert it to work with Learn. Note: If Respondus cannot convert a question, it will notify you with the option to drop it. So far, Vista question types such as Short Answer and Multiple Answer questions are incompatible with Learn. Also, most calculated formula questions have also been found to be incompatible between Vista and Learn. ITaP Training Page 4

5 The Edit Questions screen will appear. Questions can added, edited, or deleted on this screen. However, for this tutorial it is simply an opportunity to confirm that the questions were converted successfully. Once finished with the review, click the Preview & Publish tab and then click the Publish to Blackboard button on the left in the window. ITaP Training Page 5

6 Now that the assessment has been converted and reviewed, it s time to upload it to Learn. Click the Publish Wizard button to begin the process. The Publish Wizard dialog box will appear. The first set of options allows the assessment material to be published to: a single course, multiple courses, or to a local file for manual uploading. For this tutorial, the material will be published to a single course. The rest of the settings should need no changes, thus click the Next button. A new screen appears asking for the course the assessment material should be uploaded to. Click the dropdown and choose a course. Also, if the material is a single assessment, keep the ITaP Training Page 6

7 Create New Exam option selected. If the material is a pool, click the Create New Pool option instead. In addition, the uploaded material can be randomized in the assessment, have the same test settings as they were in Vista, and automatically link the assessment to a content area page in Learn. Once finished with the options, click the Next button. A new screen appears. You have the option to select a specific page within your Learn course to add the assessment link. For this tutorial, the Course Content page is chosen. Once finished, click the Next button. ITaP Training Page 7

8 A new screen appears. Respondus will now connect to Learn and move the assessment material onto the system. Once the screen displays the text Completed Successfully, click the Finish button. Note: Please be patient, as this may take anywhere from a 15 seconds to several minutes depending on the amount of material that is uploaded. Login into Blackboard Learn to confirm that the assessment material was successfully published. Hover and click on the option button, and then click the Edit the Test link, which is found next to the title of assessment. This allows you to view the questions of the test and ensure they were transferred without error. ITaP Training Page 8
