These questions will help you prepare for your functional skills assessment as the types of questions included are similar to the ones you are likely to find in your assessment. The questions are based on scenarios you may encounter in your day-to-day job to make them more relevant to you. 1

4 LEVEL 1 FUNCTIONAL SKILLS INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY PAPER Time: 2 hours You must have: ResponsesBusL1 TravelCostsBusL1 ImagesBusL1 InformationBusL1. Instructions Complete all tasks. Information The test is divided into TWO sections. Start with Section A. You are advised to spend 15 minutes on Section A and 1 hour and 45 minutes on Section B. You will need to use the internet in Section A. You must not use the internet in Section B. The total mark is 50. The marks for each task are shown in brackets use this as a guide as to how much time to spend on each task. Advice Read each task carefully before you start to complete it. Keep an eye on the time. Try to complete every task. Check your work. 2

5 Background New Business has a head office in Liverpool and has opened a new branch in Leeds. Staff will need to travel from Liverpool to the new office in Leeds. You are asked to produce an information sheet that will help staff decide whether to travel by train or car. Getting started The Data files folder in your user area contains all the files you need for this task. These files are: ResponsesBusL1 TravelCostsBusL1 ImagesBusL1 InformationBusL1. Mark allocation The marks for the test will be allocated as follows. 6 Section A You may use the internet for this section only. Task 1: How long would it take to get from Liverpool to Leeds? Open the document ResponsesBusL1. Enter your name. Use the internet to find the time it takes to travel by train from Liverpool to Leeds, without changing trains. 1 Take a screen shot of the search engine page you used, showing the text you typed in. Paste this into ResponsesBusL1. 2 Take a screen shot of the web page that you used to get the information. Paste this into ResponsesBusL1. 3 Complete the text box with the travel time that you found. 4 Resave the file ResponsesBusL1. 4 A printout of the document ResponsesBusL1 showing the screen shots and the results of your search. 7 Section B You must not use the internet from this point onwards. Task 2: Comparing costs The file TravelCostsBusL1 shows the costs of travelling between Liverpool and Leeds by train and by car. (a) Open the file TravelCostsBusL1. Enter your name in the footer. The distance by road from Liverpool to Leeds is 119km using the quickest route. Enter this value in an appropriate cell. The company pays 0.40 for each kilometre. Enter this value in an appropriate cell. Use a formula to calculate the cost of driving from Liverpool to Leeds. Enter this value in an appropriate cell. 4 (b) Use formulae to calculate: when 1, 2, 3 and 4 people are travelling in the car the cost of 1 person travelling by car when 1, 2, 3 and 4 people are travelling in the car. Use headings and formatting features to make the information clear and easy to read. 9 (c) Create a chart to display the cost of rail and road travel for 1, 2, 3 and 4 people using: the cheapest ways of travelling by train the cost of travelling by car. 8 Task 3: Produce the information sheet (a) Produce an information sheet to provide information for a member of staff travelling to the new office in Leeds. The information sheet must be aimed at company staff and include: selected text from the data file InformationBusL1 the time of the journey from Liverpool to Leeds found in Task 1 a suitable image from ImagesBusL1 the price of the cheapest rail ticket from TravelCostsBusL1. The information sheet must be clear and suitable for the target audience. Enter your name in the footer. Save the information sheet using a meaningful file name. 16 A printout of the information sheet on one side of A4. Check that your name is on the printout. (b) Protect the information sheet with a password.
