The Original Barcode:
1,000,000 years later: I
Postnet Code PLANET Code 9

The 4 States: Full Bar (F) Ascender (A) Tracker (T) Descender (D)
Typical Intelligent Mail Barcode: ATDTFTTAAFDTTFTFTTTAAADFFAFFFAFFDTTTFFADAFFATFFFADAADTTFFAATAFFFA
Barcode ID Service Type ID Mailer ID Serial Number Delivery Point ZIP
January 2013 Intelligent Mail barcode (IMb) became required on mail pieces to get automation discount January 26, 2014, Full Service Intelligent Mail will be required to get automation discount
Basic Use IMb on mail pieces Full Service Use IMb on mail pieces Unique serial number on each piece Use IMb on tray or sack tags Use IMb on pallet tags Use electronic documentation detailing every piece in the mailing
As of January 26, 2014, mail will have to be Full-Service Intelligent Mail in order to qualify for automation discounts; Full-Service discounts will no longer be relevant automation discounts will be the new Full-Service discount
Every mail owner will need either its own MID (Mailer ID) or CRID (Customer Registration ID). That means YOU or maybe your customer. USPS is adding a fun, easy to use portal to their Business Customer Gateway to make obtaining these numbers easier.
The MID is sometimes part of the IMb, or it may live in the edoc. There must be an IMb on every mail piece, and that needs an MID in it. It may be: The MID of the mail service provider; The MID of the mail tracker; The MID of the mail owner; The MID of whomever These are all OK! The mail owner and preparer will be in the edocs Tracking data generally gets sent to the MID on the mail piece
Intelligent Mail Unique Container Barcode Unique Mailpiece Barcode Unique Tray Barcode 6060 PRIMACY PKWY STE 201 MEMPHIS TN Address Change Service John Doe 6449 AMBERVIEW CV MEMPHIS TN
Yes, you need to comply in order to maintain your automation discounts, but there is value far beyond postal discounts!
What s so smart about intelligent mail? It can route mail It can track mail Inbound and Outbound It can request ACS information
The IMb acts just as the old postnet codes to route mail to the proper address based on the ZIP+4 and delivery point. You can still encode the IMb even if you don t have a full ZIP+4, but will not qualify those pieces for automation
Basic and Full Service Intelligent Mail allow for tracking mail at the piece level under the IMb Tracing program. This replaced what used to be called CONFIRM.
When a barcode sorter scans a piece of mail with an IMb on it, the Service Type ID (STID) in the IMb tells the sorter to capture tracking data and to send it to the registered MID holder (generally the MID on the mail piece) A scan record is created with information on the piece, when and where the scan occurred and what kind of scan it was; This can be interpreted to predict delivery very accurately
Coordination of other media Anticipate and staff for response Identify and improve delivery problems Prove you mailed it Just know it got there!
Trigger a follow-up to boost response or simplify the response path; Trigger outbound telemarketing after delivery to close deal; IMb tracking allows you to coordinate followup regardless of class of mail you will still know when it delivers.
Send a thank you message the day a response is sent in; Anticipate and budget for inbound revenue; Bring in or call off additional help based on anticipated response; Measure response to voter registration efforts or other third-party response vehicles.
IMb Tracing does not prove delivery no one signs for the mail BUT IMb tracing can prove that a piece was mailed if USPS reports a scan on a piece of mail, it can be assumed that the piece is in USPS custody; Due diligence requirements vary by state and agency, so check on standards for your application; Can replace costly mail certifications.
Address Quality Tools Immediately identify returned mail Immediately identify forwarded mail Get ACS information
List Quality Make immediate updates to house files Rental List Quality Identify list rental deliverability issues Move Update Compliance OneCode ACS provides acceptable means of meeting USPS move update requirements
Use IMb Tracing; Serial number stays the same New destination ZIP+4 If a new ZIP+4, assume new address If forwarded to return address ZIP+4, assume returned mail; No new address provided, but problem addresses are identified take them off your list! Clear up The Pile
A post-mailing process Best done in conjunction NCOA processing Different flavors of ACS: OneCode ACS Traditional ACS Single Source ACS There may be costs involved
The Case of the Crummy List! 23,764 records from house file First-Class letters OneCode ACS used 2,962 Moves returned 1,800+ pieces returned ALL identified, removed or corrected
It s all in the STID Service Type ID Set STID to correct setting for tracking, ACS, toher desired services There are LOTS of STIDs
Lot s of cool reports are available from third party providers Not free, but not expensive USPS may add reporting capabilities, but expect private sector to provide stronger reports
Building Reports
With Full Service, OneCode ACS will generally be free; No ACS key line required; Proper endorsement essential; Data can be retrieved from USPS Gateway; USE the data to update your lists repeat hits on the same address may cost your money sending mail to old addresses always costs you money!
Informed Visibility Tracking on trays and other containers Start-the-clock data A path to Seamless Acceptance Better workflow in big mail service providers Postal Wizard makes Full Service easy for mailings under 10,000 pieces
It is the future you WILL need to use it; It is complicated do not assume your software will do it all for you; You can do this; It promises a new view and process with mail don t get hung up on the difficulties embrace the new possibilities!
