1 Communication Technology Human communication is necessary because we are social beings. According to McDermott (2013) communication technology in earlier times, to the fashioning of any tool, machine or technical device used by man to facilitate the process of communicating. We can map our progress in technological advancements from BCE to CE times; cave paintings, carrier pigeons, marathon man, the town Cryer, North American Indians used smoke signals, African tribes used talking drums, postal service, newspapers, telegraphs, radio, telephone, televisions, bullroarer and the internet. Today communication technology refers to the application of scientific advancements in telephony (vice and voiceless) to process of communication with the aim of making it more efficient (McDermott).

Instant messaging (IM, live chat) Immediate communication Accountability Cheap (affordable) Productive Requires hardware (laptop, video) Requires internet The internet is not always safe. Television Facilitates both audio and visual signals Facilitates mass communication Television channels can be changed and message missed Advertising and airtime can be very expensive The receiver can respond directly or have real time conversation in most instances 7. Radio Relatively inexpensive A form of mass communication Radio can be found anywhere in any appliance store

Personal digital assistants Facilitates intra-personal communication Affordable Can store large quantities of information Features can be distracting Users must be able to read and use device User must be able to remember where information is stored in the PDA 12.
