2 WHAT WE DO TO HELP THE ELDERLY SUPPORT A GRAN: Through the support a gran programme, HelpAge India encourages individuals and organizations to help fulfill the basic needs of destitute elders. OLD AGE HOMES: We support old age homes, hospitals and day care centres for the needy elderly. ADVOCACY: We make people and the government aware of the concerns and needs of the elders in our society through various advocacy programmes. We also make elders aware of their own rights to access social, food and habitat security. INCOME GENERATION: Many older persons need to work in order to survive. We have helped set up income generation projects, through which they can regain their status in the family and community. RESTORING VISION: We conduct free cataract operations every year, restoring the vision of many elders, thereby helping them regain their independence. RELIEF AND REHABILITATION: Elderly persons are especially vulnerable during disasters, and get sidelined when aid is distributed. We have undertaken relief and rehabilitation programs in Gujarat, Bihar, Coastal India and Jammu & Kashmir, to help put their lives back together. MOBILE MEDICARE UNITS: Our Mobile Medicare Units take the doctor and free medication to the doorsteps of elderly in rural areas and urban slums. HELPLINES: Our Helplines in 21 cities across the country provide information and help to older persons in distress. 3 ABOUT US HelpAge India is a registered organisation working for the cause and care of disadvantaged older persons in India. HelpAge leads the movement to shift society s outlook towards the disadvantaged elderly from that of pity, to that of respect and dignity. We advocate for the rights of the elderly, and focus on issues such as elder-abuse, family care, social inclusion, pensions and welfare schemes for the poor. We promote awareness and understanding of elder issues within society, and help the elderly gain awareness of and access to their rights. We also work in the fields of health care, liveihood support, shelter, elder self-help, welfare, counseling, and disaster mitigation. With your support, we can make their lives better and help give them the respect they deserve. In their golden years, when they ought to celebrate a life well lived, they are instead destitute and helpless.
