3 NEXT ESA SAR TOOLBOX (NEST) NEST (Next ESA SAR Toolbox) is a new open source ESA software for visualizing, analyzing and post-processing ESA and 3rd party SAR data processed from Level-1 or higher Provides both basic and advanced tools for SAR user community Shares the core architecture with the ESA BEAM toolbox Fully portable to multiple hardware platforms and operating systems thanks to a 100% pure Java implementation. Modular design for easy modifications and upgrades An API enables users to easily add their own modules and extend the capabilities of NEST Fully open source under the GNU GPL licence 3
4 NEST 2C HIGHLIGHTS [1] Project Time scale Fist Release 1 C November 2008 Second release 2C June 2009 Third release 3C is expected in December 2009 Currently supported products - ESA SAR missions: ERS1 & 2 (CEOS & Envisat format from PGS and VMP), ENVISAT - Third party SAR-data: ALOS PALSAR, JERS SAR, TerraSAR-X (except SSC), Radarsat-2 An integrated Display and Analysis Tool (DAT) for SAR data visualisation, analysis and processing A Graph Processing Tool (GPT) for command line execution of user-defined batch processing chains A rich collection of readers and writers to allow easy and efficient access to SAR data and transfer of data between different software packages (DIMAP, GeoTIFF, HDF 4 & HDF 5, NetCDF, ENVI, Generic Binary) 4

13 THE PRODUCT VIEW After having opened the product, the data is listed in the Products View where you can examine product structure and metadata. 13
14 THE PRODUCT VIEW A Product consists of the following: Identification: Basic information on the product (Mission, Product type, Acquisition time, Track and Orbit) Metadata: This includes all the original metadata within the product, the Abstracted Metadata which is the important metadata fields used by the Operators in a common format and the Processing_graph history recording the processing that was done and Tie Point Grids: Raster grids created interpolating the tie-points information within the product. The interpolation is done on the fly according to the product. Bands: The actual bands inside the product and virtual bands created by NEST from expressions. Different icons are used to distinguish these bands. 14

18 CREATING PROJECT Nest offers the capability to create a Project, in which the user can organise and store complex processing over multiple datasets The main advantage of using Projects is that it automatically organizes the processed images in separate directories 18
