2 What is Impact? Impact tools is a Windows software developed at the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC), in Italy. Impact offers a series of tools designed to simplify satellite image data processing, with a specific interest for forest degradation and deforestation monitoring, on the basis of more than 30 years of experience in the field. Impact has a range of tools to prepare satellite imagery (decode formats, reproject, clip, assemble, recode, etc.), the tools are design to take care of technical details for you. It also has tools to assess and analyse forest degradation and deforestation, developed by our researchers. A series of tutorials was developed to show usage examples. Our team offers frequent training in South America, Africa and South-East Asia, which is an opportunity to meet users. Therefore, the software is frequently updated to reflect actual users needs.
3 Technical specification Impact is based solely on open source software, and developed by our in-house team. We provide it at no cost, and it can be freely redistributed. Impact runs on Microsoft Windows. It is written as a portable software: the installation process consists in copying the software in any directory of your computer, and it does not depend on any other software or library (it is built with anything it needs to run). Also, you can freely move the software to another place on your PC, or delete it without any harm to your machine. Caution: data are stored within the software, make a copy of your data if you wish to delete it. Although Impact does not require an internet connection to run, if you have one it is able to display Google satellite imagery in background. Also, with an internet connection, the software is able to self update, so that you are sure to have the latest software corrections and features.

6 Installation Download Impact from our server (see previous slide) as an executable file. Save this installer to any place on your computer, then execute it. You must first accept the License terms.
7 Installation Then, choose a place where the software files will be copied. A common practice is to store files at the root of a drive in a directory named Impact, but you can very well stored it into another folder.

The IMPACT ZIP file can be copied to an internal or external disk and decompressed. It does not require installation. Take care to avoid too long localization on the disk, choose for example: F:\ and avoid decompressing the file inside the same file (such as: IMPACT\IMPACT). The file is structured as follows: DATA: contains the raster and vector data. The subfiles correspond to the different processing levels START_Impact.bat: Windows executable file to launch the application
9 Installation Then, Impact copies all its files into the chosen directory and starts the application. It you are connected to the Internet, it will also check if a new version is available. In this case, you will be notified and asked for permission to update the software. This version check is done every time the software is launched.
10 Running Impact To run Impact, go the the installation directory, and double click on START_Impact.bat
11 Running Impact When running, Impact shows a terminal and a Graphic User Interface. Be sure to not close the terminal, as it would forbid Impact to properly work. The terminal is necessary to allow services to be up and running.
12 Quitting Impact To quit Impact: - Close the Graphic User Interface window; - Close the Terminal (it will display the message terminate batch jobs (Y/N) for a few seconds and automatically quit).
13 Impact files are found in the directory you chose for installation. START_Impact.bat is the application launcher. DATA is the directory where all data is stored. File structure overview Within DATA, there is a directory named RAW_data were you must copy data to ingest (copy here Sentinel 2, Landsat or RapidEye data in their original format as provided by their respective space agencies). In directory DATA, you can copy any data you wish (raster and vectors), at the root of the directory or in subdirectories. When you copy a data here (or in a sub directory), Impact detects it and shows it in its interface.
14 Graphic user interface Impact graphic user interface has 3 panels. The main panel offers: - A list of layers (raster and vectors) found in IMPACT/DATA. Note that data copied in IMPACT/DATA/RAW_data are not shown, as there are used only for the data decoding/ingestion module Zip/DN to TOA reflectance (see the corresponding tutorial). - The layers have different functions available when doing a right click on their names (raster and vector have different functions, as well as multi band and single band rasters) - A view of the selected layers - A list of modules (more details in the other tutorials) The Log monitors panel shows messages from the last function you called. It also let you kill a running process. The settings panel allows to access a range of settings. Any change in the setting will force Impact to reload.

16 The available data are grouped into different categories. A test data set is available by default. Base maps (Blue Marble does not require internet connection, Google Satellite is the default map with internet connection) Any raster and vector layer placed in the DATA/VECTOR_data/ Raster data resulting from the calibration ("_calrefbyt") Raster data resulting from the processing modules: Principal Component Analysis ("_pca") and Automatic Classification ("_class")
17 Logs Monitor: Messages output by the processing functions. Click on show info to see the entire message (including error messages). You can stop a running process, and eventually remove a log message.
18 Right click options: 1) File info 2) Zoom to Layer Extent 3) Visualisation options (i.e. opacity, RGB bands and stretch type) 4) Build pyramids 5) Start Raster recode 6) File options (i.e. Rename/Delete file)
19 Selected images and shapefiles are visible in the center. The viewing order can be modified within each category and between data categories (by moving the corresponding file) Right click: option on the corresponding file Navigation options at the top of the panel. Zoom in / out also accessible with mouse
20 Tutorial This tutorial shows how to view a Landsat image and display it as an RGB composite
21 The layer panel let you choose which dataset to display on the map. You can also change the order in which layers are displayed by dragging them up and down along the layer list. The layers are stacked on the map display as they appear from bottom to top in the layer list (layers at the bottom of the list are hidden by those placed above). Check layer oli_ _ _calrefbyt.tif to display it on the map. Right click the oli_ _ _calrefbyt.tif layer and click on Zoom to Layer Extent. The display zooms to the extent of the layer. You can also double click to zoom to the layer.
22 Multiple bands raster have a default combination of bands for rendering: Red is set to band 2, Green to band 5 and blue to band 3.
23 To change the band combination, right click on the layer and choose visualization options. Click the Band drop-down arrow next to each color channel and click the band you want to display for that color (in this case R=3, G =2, B=1).
24 Optionally, click the Stretch type drop-down arrow and click the type of stretch you want to use. Example: Min-Max The minimum and maximum values of the calculated statistics will be used as the minimum and maximum values of the color ramp; all values in between will be interpolated linearly..x stdev A standard deviation stretch will be applied. You can also specify the n value for the number of standard deviations to use. This method is used to emphasize how much feature values vary from the mean value
25 To visualize the Layer Info right click on the file, select File Info and a window will pop up showing the File information (i.e. File, Spatial and Raster information)
26 The Layout toolbar provides navigation tools Allows you to pan the data frame. Allows you to zoom to the full extent of your map. Allows you to go back to the previous extent. Allows you to go forward to the next extent. Identifies the geographic feature or place on which you click.
27 For example, you can use the "identify tool" that give you the value where you click. A window will pop up showing the pixel values (i.e. pixel value of each band, lat, lon, column and row)
