3 Introduction to Recovery 001 This introductory workshop explores the impact of mental health challenges and diagnosis on people s lives and gives an overview of the different recovery pathways that can help us navigate our way towards building a valued, meaningful and satisfying life. Understanding how to discover a life that is meaningful to you as an individual can lead to improved choices, more hope, greater control and new opportunities. This short course will explore what recovery might mean to you personally and how to set about achieving it. PBR 001 Tue 17 Oct 10.30am pm Peterborough RCE Creative Writing for Recovery 011 This course is a fun and interactive introduction to different forms of creative writing and an opportunity to see how fiction writing can support us along a recovery path. The course will provide such information as the structure of fiction writing, developing characters, settings and plots and a look into different styles of poetry. There will be opportunities for writing together and sharing your writing with fellow students. The course provides an opportunity to explore spirituality in a context of recovery and wellbeing. Through exploring different types of spirituality, we can enhance the recovery journey and our own sense of wellbeing. The course covers our sense of meaning, purpose (spirituality) and its connection to life, mindfulness and creativity. 4 Breathing Space 015 Life can be challenging when we are facing our own personal struggles: we might experience our minds being filled with worrying thoughts and self-criticism. There are times when we might try to tackle these thoughts, but this can leave us feeling unhappy or perhaps anxious. Mindfulness gives you the chance to see things differently. Becoming mindful allows you the space to really be in the present moment. This workshop also provides you with the opportunity to think about mindfulness as a wellness tool in your recovery journey. There will be opportunities to try various mindfulness techniques such as mindful drawing and mindful eating. We will be discussing what meaningful activity means to each of us individually, then share and explore ideas around how to get the most from our experiences and how to take the first step in our new journey. 5 Anxiety & Panic 030 Does anxiety and panic occur in your life? Would you like to find new ways of understanding and coping with them? This course explores some helpful ways in which we can learn to deal with our anxieties and panic attacks, through a wide range of tools such as medication, complementary therapies, talking treatments, CBT and more. 6 Magazine Workshop 092 Speak Your Mind Magazine Recovery College East is excited to offer students the opportunity to be a part of our magazine project that is written for and by people with lived experience of mental health challenges and long-term physical health challenges. This workshop will offer an update around the progress made so far, share ideas around what you want to see in forthcoming issues and begin to develop some pieces of work that you would like to contribute. We are very keen for new students to bring their skills and insight to the magazine and we would also encourage those students who have already been involved to come along and continue with their highly valued contributions. The three activities will quite varied and some focus on the festive season. Come and join for a day of creative fun. This will include: looking at the areas in our lives where we are already confident and where we want to grow; the way that we view ourselves and how this impacts on our confidence; looking at the link between confidence and motivation; exploring new approaches to goal setting; how we can overcome barriers in our lives and the benefits of support networks for increasing our confidence. 7 Combatting Stigma 097 Though there is more recognition now about the stigma associated with mental health, we still have a long way to go. In this course we will look at the different factors which make up stigma. We will consider both external and self-stigma as well as finding out about our rights in this area and some different ways we can challenge any stigma we experience or see. There will be an opportunity to share and discuss a whole range of sounds from the environment as well as our own musical preferences. The course will also look at how we can use music, rhythm and sound as a wellness tool. 8 Introduction to the Photography Programme 153 In collaboration with a PhD student, from University of the Arts, London, we are delighted to be able to introduce this new Photography Programme to our Cambridge college. This session will be an introduction to the programme where the research project will be explained in detail along with an overview of the whole course. CAM 153 Wed 13 Sep 10am - 12noon Cambridge RCE Photography Programme 153 There will be five sessions during the term, plus two research sessions, culminating in an exhibition at Michael House, Cambridge to be held during December. The course will focus on developing photography skills to produce anonymous self-portraits and other types of images that protect and don t reveal your identity using creative techniques to reveal elements of self. Students will learn how to use DSLR (digital single lens reflex) cameras (including use of apertures, shutter speeds and ISO) and how to edit images using GIMP software. The course will be offered in Peterborough in the Spring Term. If this project is successful, the college hopes to be able to offer the course regularly in the future! 9 Becoming More Assertive 154 One way that we can grow our confidence and develop our communication skills is through assertiveness. We will explore the qualities of being self-assured and confident whilst remaining mindful and respectful of others when expressing ourselves. This course will outline the theory behind assertiveness and provide you with the opportunity to practise your assertiveness skills in a safe and supportive environment. 10 Skills for Self-Advocacy 156 Advocacy is about making sure your voice is heard, your rights are met and you re in control of your life. Advocacy services like Total Voice Cambridgeshire and Peterborough can help you to do this. However, many people don t know what an advocacy service is, or how, when or where to access it. Total Voice will talk about some of the key values of advocacy, what this means in practice and explain how, when and whom Total Voice as a service can support. They will introduce you to the idea of self-advocacy and help you develop advocacy skills of your own. Run by Total Voice Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. 11 Men's Shed Workshop 158 CPFT is currently in the process of developing its own Men s Shed project. Men s Shed is an international project defined as men coming together, working shoulder to shoulder, making, fixing and talking however all genders are very welcome to attend these sessions. This workshop will be part activity and part co-production. The first half will give you the opportunity to undertake an interactive activity and provide a glimpse into what the group might look like. The second half invites you to offer your thoughts and insights about how to take the project forward and to be a part of its exciting future. In this session members of staff from CPFT s Recovery Coach Team will offer an introduction to the concept of coaching and the benefits it can have on your life. This workshop serves as an introduction to an extended coaching course that will be available to students next term. 12 CO-PRODUCTION EVENTS The co-production events will be held on three separate whole days with two sessions on each day. We are keen to involve both CPFT staff, recovery college students and anyone else with relevant lived experience, bringing together both professional and lived experience expertise. Please join us if you feel you can contribute in any way. You can choose to attend for the whole day or just individual sessions. These workshops aim to look at the key areas that would be helpful to develop into new courses to be delivered through the Recovery College. Your expertise will be highly valued and will ensure that we deliver courses that are meaningful, allow people to gain a greater understanding of the potential impact of their experience and develop relevant wellness tools to encourage resilience. They will also aim to identify how those around the situation can offer the best support. Co-Production Day 1 CPD1 CPD1/1: Slips, Trips and Falls (Morning Session) These physical occurrences can impact on our everyday lives and this session aims to look at the key areas that would be helpful to develop into a new course to be delivered through the Recovery College. CPD1/2: Chronic Fatigue (Afternoon Session) Chronic fatigue can have a big impact on a person s everyday life and this workshop aims to look at the key areas that would be helpful to develop into a new course to be delivered through the Recovery College. CPD2/2: Developing a Money Matters Workshop (Afternoon Session) This session is about further developing of a new course that will look at money, debt, vulnerability and recognising responsibility whilst seeing how we can be more in control of our finances and how we can achieve this. This session follows on from last term s workshop held in collaboration with Making Money Count. 14 WISBECH Setting Up A Group (The Basics) 152 This two-week course will focus on the knowledge and skills needed to effectively set up and run a group. You may want to meet with people who share a common interest with you, set up a group for mutual peer support or use what you learn in a work setting. The skills involved are very transferable. Topics will include: practicalities, facilitation and learning styles and understanding group dynamics.
