1 Syllabus: Adobe InDesign Workshop CE 025C Spring 2017 Continuing Education Course Information Location: Terra Hall Room 1402 Dates: TUE 6-9PM, MAR 14 APR 11 Note: Instructor Information Name: Gina Kernan Policy: Please me whenever you have a question or comment regarding class. Gina Kernan is the Web and Graphic Designer at University of the Sciences, where she serves up digital and print loveliness in the Marketing Department, with close attention to detail and a passion for visual communication. She also serves the design community as part of the executive board of AIGA Philadelphia, a local chapter of the national organization striving to advance design as a professional craft, strategic advantage, and vital cultural force. Gina earned her BS in Graphic Design from Drexel University. When she s not designing, Gina enjoys crafting, cooking and eating, escaping the internet at the beach, and exploring her neighborhood. Course Description Adobe's page layout program lets you put together every kind of print-oriented product imaginable: brochures, ads, posters, billboards, packaging and more using text, raster images and vector graphics. Efficient tools help to organize your design like style sheets, master pages, tables and columns, giving you limitless layouts for both print, web and interactive design. InDesign allows you to create multi-page documents such as pamphlets, annual reports, magazines and books. It s seamlessly with files from Photoshop and Illustrator and you will learn how to integrate and use these tools more effectively. When you finish this course you should have the basic knowledge to meet all of your desktop and digital publishing needs. Course Overview Each class will be divided between a lectures/design objectives and in-class. Some weeks will require students to complete out of classroom assignments. This course will integrate the theory of typography and design within each project by way of examples and readings. Students will be responsible for getting printed for assignments. Readings, Quizzes, Design Projects, Design Objectives (Lectures), Presentations and s, will all be part of the curriculum. Course Objectives/Learning Objectives Upon completing this course, students will: Have a proficiency in a broad range of design skills pertaining to publication design Have a basic understanding of typography, color, layout, tables, images, graphics, styles and interactive elements. Be able to navigate Adobe Workspace, Set up a document, and with pages. Understand how to with frames, importing & linking graphics Be able to import and edit text, with typography and style sheets

2 Efficiently use color, transparencies, and tables Have an understanding of output, exporting and packaging. Be able to create a print-ready document. Have the ability to create a well designed layout, brochure or other design materials for print or web. Course Resources Software: Course will be conducted using Adobe InDesign. Adobe CC is the version we will be using in the classroom. Adobe Acrobat will also be used to view pdf files. Students will have access to the computer labs during the course of the term. Literature: Required Readings will be supplied by the instructor Recommended but not Required: How to Design Cool Stuff Before and After Magazine by John Wade Thinking with Type Ellen Lupton For tutorials and additional help it is recommended to visit Lynda.com or Adobe.com for video tutorials. These tutorials are free and/or low cost. Additional Course Materials Supplies Sketchbook (suggested, for notes, planning projects and idea sketching) USB drive with a minimum memory capacity of 2GB Course Policies Student Feedback/Communication If you experience a legitimate emergency, which will prevent you from completing required course on time, I expect you to communicate with me at the earliest reasonable opportunity. Please state the nature of the emergency and when you expect to turn in the course. Submitting Electronic Files All electronic files must be submitted in.pdf format unless otherwise noted. Please name your file in the using the following convention: Project Name_First InitialLast Name. Thus, if my name where John Smith and I was submitting the Narrative PowerPoint assignment, I would rename the NarrativePowerPoint.pdf file as NarativePowerPoint_JSmith. Attendance + Participation All students are expected to attend classes regularly and promptly, and for the duration of the scheduled instructional time. Individual instructors will decide the optimum time for taking attendance and may penalize for habitual lateness or absence. Repeated absences may result in a grade of "F" for the course. *Students who withdraw from a course must do so in writing. Non-attendance does not constitute an official withdrawal. To review the Student Code of Conduct in its entirety, please visit: Grading Students taking the course for non-credit will still receive a PASS/FAIL grade. Students taking the course for credit will receive a letter grade based on the following criteria: Component Examples of Components Points s and in class Quality and completion 80% Participation (incl Responses) Class Discussions, s 20% Total 100% Projects will be graded in the following categories: Visual Appeal, concept, development, and presentation. Lecture: Intro to the Adobe InDesign space and tools. Creating a new document. Setting document properties. In class : Build a 1 page, 1 sided document. Draw text boxes. Insert a Photo. Create a Flyer advertising and event. Must include at least 2 images (logos, photos or illustrations), and at least 2 text boxes. Bring color print out to next class. space and tools. Group of Event Flyers. Were photos placed successfully? Does text read well? Discuss choices of font/color/visuals. Does your flyer SELL your event? Lecture: Types of images (color modes, file types, resolution). What does print ready mean? Saving, exporting, and packaging files. In class : Ad Project. Re-create ad given to you in class. Build a 6x9 postcard. Image side must be full bleed with a photographic image and text. Submit, PDF as well at packaged native files (zipped). Bring 2 color print outs to next class, one with crop marks and one trimmed to size and mounted on presentation board. images, bleed and saving. Group of postcards. Must include at least 2 images (logos, photos or illustrations), and at least 2 text boxes. Goal: To create a visually stimulating, thoughtful design that expresses the type of event the flyer is advertising. Presentation and Hand-in Procedures: The flyer will be printed in full color on 8.5 x 11 paper. Students will be asked to bring a finished, digital copy of the finished flyer to class, and will be asked explain it in detail to the class. Questions to keep in mind: Who is the target audience? (Age, gender, subgroups, other segmentation) What is the message you are attempting to convey? Were photos placed successfully? Does text read well? Does your flyer SELL your event? Project 2: Postcard Synopsis: Students will be asked to build a 6x9 postcard invitation. Image side must be full bleed with a photographic image and text. Goal: To create a visually stimulating, thoughtful design that expresses the type of event the invitation is for. Presentation and Hand-in Procedures: The postcard will be printed in full color on 8.5 x 11 paper with bleed and crop marks. Students will be asked to bring a finished pint out to class and

Goal: To create a visually stimulating, thoughtful design that expresses the vibe and essence of the poem that was chosen. Presentation and Hand-in Procedures: The poster will be printed in full color on 11x17 paper. Students will be asked to bring a finished pint out to class and will be asked explain it in detail to the class. Students will submit PDF files as well as packaged native files (zipped) via . Project 4: Short Story Synopsis: Students will be asked to choose a short story and design into an 11x17 magazine spread. Goal: To create a visually stimulating, thoughtful design that expresses the vibe and essence of the poem that was chosen, that is also easy to read and understand. Presentation and Hand-in Procedures: The magazine spread layouts will be printed in full color on 11x17 paper. Students will be asked to bring a finished pint out to class and will be asked explain it in detail to the class. Students will submit PDF files as well as packaged native files (zipped) via .
