5 ONC s Observatories Up to gigabits of bandwidth (4Gbps/node 2 Gbps/JB) Up to kilowatts of power (8 400V per node) Precision timing (NTP, PTP protocols supported) Capacity for hundreds of attached devices Up to 3000m water depth 25-year design life Resilient network, moderate operating costs Over 50TB/year data flow initially Support dozen of different instrument types
6 ONC s Observatories Extension of the Internet under the Ocean Capture data from many different types of sensors (1D->5D data) Interact with underwater instrumentation (e.g., cameras) Precision time Keep data + metadata for 25 years Provide search, visualization, data products to many users Allow for X-correlation between data from various sensors Detect and react to events
7 ONC s Observatories So far total of over 220 instruments, >850 sensors from 6 shore stations (with many more planned) >85 different types of instruments 50-70TB of compressed data archived/year 340,000 data downloads/year from ~190 distinct users/ quarter

14 on the leading edge Oceanographic data are collected by citizens using ships of opportunity Data collected: CTD (conductivitytemperature-depth) casts, including chlorophyll and dissolved oxygen. Data are transmitted via an app to the ONC archive and made available online. Partnership with Pacific Salmon Foundation
15 Advanced Data Products Marine Safety Sea State indicators (currents, wave steepness, wind speeds and directions, integration with models from CODARS, met & wave buoys, ADCPs) Marine Mammal collision avoidance ( from hydrophone data) Marine domain awareness ( from AIS data) Public Safety - Tsunami impact assessment at certain points for communities on the coast - Early Earthquake notification (based on a regional network of highly sensitive accelerometers) Environmental monitoring - Tracking the cumulative impact of industrial activities, including noise in the ocean - Health of the ocean indices
