IBM smarter Business Resilience in the Cloud Richard Cocchiara IBM Distinquished Engineer & CTO for BCRS Member of IBM Academy of Technology or 21 March IBM Corporation Something meaningful is happening The world is about to get a whole lot smarter. Every human being, company, organization, city, nation, natural system and man-made made system is becoming interconnected, instrumented and intelligent. This is leading to new savings and efficiency but perhaps as important, new possibilities for progress. 2
Globally, systems and infrastructure are reaching a breaking point. Explosion of data, transactions and digitally-aware devices strains IT infrastructure and operations. New regulations put greater demands on storage capacity and capabilities. Business & technical risks continue to increase Exponential growth in communications subscribers and services exposes bandwidth limitations. Supply inefficiencies and demand spikes tax energy and utility systems. Transportation infrastructure aging and inefficient Meanwhile, customer expectations and competitive pressures are increasing. 3 It s time to start thinking differently about infrastructure. t Infrastructure needs to become more dynamic. 4
We need to rethink and revamp our global infrastructure for the challenges of the 21 st century. We need an infrastructure that is smarter and can respond to today s business and IT needs rather then react to them A smarter planet needs a dynamic infrastructure We need an infrastructure that does not consume unlimited resources but rather optimizes the limited resources we have We need an to accept the convergence of business and IT infrastructure into one dynamic infrastructure that enables new breakthrough service opportunities. IBM s leadership in helping clients harness emerging capabilities, like cloud computing and virtualization, provides a foundation for innovation. 5 A dynamic infrastructure enables visibility, control, and automation across all business and IT assets DYNAMIC INFRASTRUCTURE Mobility Infrastructure Facilities Infrastructure Production Infrastructure Technology Infrastructure Communications Infrastructure VISIBILITY CONTROL AUTOMATION...converged management to deliver smarter business outcomes 6
A dynamic infrastructure transforms these assets into higher value services DYNAMIC INFRASTRUCTURE SERVICE-ORIENTED Rapid service deployment Reusable service components Secure and reliable processes AND SERVICE-MANAGED Integrated management across all assets visibility, control, and automation Manage complex, rapid changes.implementing a service-oriented, service-managed approach to rapidly and dynamically deliver business and IT services 7 A dynamic infrastructure addresses today s challenges and tomorrow s opportunities. IMPROVE SERVICE Not only ensuring high availability and quality of existing services, but also meeting customer expectations for real-time, dynamic access to innovative new services. REDUCE COST Not just containing operational cost and complexity, but achieving breakthrough hproductivity it gains through virtualization, optimization, energy stewardship, and flexible sourcing. MANAGE RISK Not only addressing today s security, resiliency, and compliance challenges, but also preparing for the new risks posed by an even more connected and collaborative world. 8
How do you build a more dynamic infrastructure? Start with a base of over 150 interconnected resiliency centers around the world Add a highly skilled staff of over 2000 people dedicated to ensuring resilience Build a track record of support that demonstrates your ability to consistently deliver service Utilize world-class technologies from companies like IBM, EMC, HP, SUN, CISCO, Juniper, RedHat, VMWare, etc.. Then turn your people loose to build creative, new 24x7 service delivery models for the future 9 And what you get is smarter Business Resilience: The ability to rapidly adapt and respond to both positive and negative risks while maintaining continuous business and IT operations SMART IS: Managing risk with enterprise-wide resiliency strategy SMART IS: Reducing cost through proactive incident response and reduced downtime SMART IS: Ensuring resilient service delivery in a 24/7 world. SMART IS: Responding with speed and agility while minimizing risk exposure. 10
Smarter Business Resilience combines dynamic infrastructure with Cloud Computing Cloud computing is a new consumption and delivery model inspired by consumer Internet services. Cloud enables: Self-service Sourcing options Economies of scale Cloud computing model Cloud services Cloud represents: The industrialization of delivery for IT-supported services Multiple types of clouds will co-exist: Private, public and hybrid Workload- or programming model-specific An effective cloud deployment is built on a dynamic infrastructure 11 Cloud Computing is a user experience and a business model Cloud computing is an emerging style of computing in which applications, data, and IT resources are provided as services to users over the network. infrastructure with rapid provisioning and deployment Cloud computing is the provisioning, deployment and operation of virtualized computing resources onto an intranet or Internet (the cloud ) as a utility. improved management Cloud computing is way of managing large numbers of highly virtualized resources such that from a management perspective, they resemble a single large resource. This can then be used to deliver services controlled by the customer. CLOUD COMPUTING Cost VIRTUALIZATION STANDARDIZATION AUTOMATION Flexibility + + = 12
Major factors driving cloud computing economics Infrastruc cture Levera age Virtualization of Hardware Utilization of Infrastructure Drives lower capital requirements Virtualized environments are scalable and highly utilized Self Self serve requires less support Labor Leverage Automation of Management Standardization of Workloads Take repeatable tasks and automate services Lower complexity = more automation possible = reduced IT labor costs 13 The user sees only the service, and has no need to know anything about the technology or implementation Each service shares several key attributes that allow the user to easily identify, procure and consume services Attributes Standardized, consumable web-delivered services Catalog, API Od Ordering Flexible pricing Metering & Billing Elastic scaling Rapid provisioning Advanced virtualization CULTURE ORGANIZATION CHANGE...service oriented and service managed 14
Three new delivery models to deliver workload services Enterprise Traditional Enterprise IT Private Cloud Hybrid Cloud Public Clouds Private Cloud Workloads are provided as a service, over an intranet, within the enterprise and behind the firewall Key features: Scalability Automatic/rapid provisioning Chargeback ability Widespread virtualization Hybrid Cloud Internal and external service delivery methods are integrated, activities/functions Public Cloud Workloads are provided as a service, over the Internet Key features: Scalability Automatic/rapid provisioning Standardized offerings Consumption-based pricing Multi-tenancy 15 Clients can chose the type of implementation that best fits their needs Public Clouds (provider) Private Clouds (data center) Hybrid Clouds s as a service IBM Cloud technology supports the full spectrum of Cloud services allows building private clouds while leveraging public clouds Applications, Processes and Information as a service (i.e. - Planning, Notification, Testing) Platform as a service (i.e. - Backup, Archive, Recovery) Infrastructure as a service (i.e. Managed Continuity) 16
