1 CAS Barrington LanSTAR to BACnet-IP Description The CAS Gateway translates data between a Barrington LanSTAR and BACnet-IP. The gateway connects to a Barrington LanSTAR through RS232. It polls the LanSTAR for values at a configurable rate and stores the results internally. These results are available to devices on a BACnet-IP network through a BACnet server interface. The gateway accepts BACnet write property requests and translates them to write commands which are sent to the LanSTAR. Up to 300 LanSTAR values can be made available for reading and writing through BACnet-IP. BACnet object names are automatically generated based on the LanSTAR value they represent (Station1-AI3, Station4-DI2, etc). Driver only supports conversion to BACnet-IP. 3 Driver Operation The CAS has an internal record of LanSTAR point values which is periodically updated through RS232 read requests. The frequency at which points are read is configurable through the web interface. When a BACnet client makes a read request the gateway serves its data using the appropriate conversion. When a BACnet client makes a write request the CAS updates its internal records as well as writing the data to the LanSTAR. The driver generates an HTML page which allows status to be checked and setting to be altered from a web browser. Editable settings include LanSTAR device number, MicroSTAR station, point type and number. Connecting CAS Port0 connects to LanSTAR Port3 or Port4. Connection must be made with a DB9 NULL modem cable. Wiring Diagram pictured: Page 3 of 6

4 Configuration Access the LanSTAR configuration page by connecting the CAS to an Ethernet network and entering the following URL into the web browser of a computer on the network: MyIPAddress/bin/LanSTAR/cofig The driver requires you to enter the correct LanSTAR ID. This information can be accessed from the keypad menu on the LanSTAR. The CAS polls the LanSTAR for updated point values one at a time in the order they are listed on this page. Seconds between Sending Polls specified how frequently the reads are performed. The recommended value is two seconds. The LanSTAR needs time to respond to read requests before the next request is made. If the LanSTAR does not respond to a read message within the specified time the value served to BACnet will remain unchanged and the CAS will move to the next item to poll. All enabled points are polled regardless if they are inputs (AI,DI) our outputs (DO, DI). The CAS has a factory default list of LanSTAR points. To revert to this state go to MyIpAddress/bin/system/, select Delete Database, then Reboot System. All points are disabled by default. Page 4 of 6

5 A disabled point will not be served on BACnet-IP. New values of this point will not be requested from the LanSTAR. At least one point must be enabled for the CAS to show up as a device on BACnet-IP network scans. The MicroSTAR station field can refer to MicroSTARs connected to the LanSTAR through its RS485 bus or virtual MicroSTARs. Point type and number are selectable though a dropdown. Available options are: AI0, AI1, AI2, AI3, AO0, AO1, AO2, AO3, DI0, DI1, DI2, DI3, DO0, DO1, DO2, DO3, CO0, CO1, CO2, CO3, SP0, SP1, SP2, SP3. BACnet names and object types are generated automatically based on the station, point type, and point number. BACnet object types are automatically set to analog_value or binary_value based on the point type. BACnet object Ids are automatically generated in sequential order. The configuration page displays the present value and timestamp of the last successful read from the LanSTAR. The page must be reloaded to see new values. Changes come into effect only after changes are saved and the CAS is rebooted. Changes will be lost if you leave the LanSTAR configuration page without pressing Save All Settings. Communications functions Sufficient functions have been added to the product to read/write values from LanSTARs. Other functions can be added on request.
