2 Z13 customer experiences We have installed round about 60 machines in Europe only more than 100 world wide We already installed 20 machines in the largest Mainframe client we have in Europe We installed many machines in banking and industry clients. Most of them see improvements over and above the 10% we told as average single processor improvement. In Europe we have 2 cases where we are activley working with the client to analyse the performance of the machine, propose solutions and work it through. We see the first clients exploiting technologies like SMT, SIMD and large memory with great success (meaning efficiency improvements) z13tllb2

9 SMT SMT will slow down processing (for 25% throughput improvement, workloads will run 60% slower) Should not be a problem for Online transactions (as you have 2 Threads now instead of one Needs to be reviewed for Batch processing Can be switched on dynamically for ZIIPs per z/os. Reults vary depending on customer workload. Very nice results (way above the average) for: SAP Application Server running on z/linux Oracle on z/linux BUT not all workloads will beenfit from SMT. 11 IBM z Systems Methodology for Sizing 1. Collect HIS data from the peak hours of the last month (Software AND Hardware) Use the HIS data also as feed for zpcr and zcp Collect zcp3000 data from one full week (incl. Weekend). It must be the week where the 4hra is also included (you get this from the SCRT report) Work with your IBM technical representative to create a little study 3. Use zpcr to get a first sizing of new HW. This is dependant on the HW PEAK you have not the SW peak (the SW peak is a 4hour rolling AVERAGE). 4. After you analyzed the HIS and zcp3000 data do a workshop with IBM about the new machine and its capabilities and dependencies. Make sure you do this together with the application programming folks to assess Java, Cobol, PL1 etc. improvements of z13. 11

12 Going Deeper: Leverage all the strengths of z13! The full value of z13 goes far beyond basic system capacity Do your Basic capacity analysis to provide a baseline Enable CPU MF Counters data to match your workload to the LSPR. Use the zpcr tool to correctly size your z13 processor capacity. This is the base performance capacity that the customer should expect. In addition, use a holistic approach to understand all the additional performance benefits of z13 How much will your systems gain from all these additional benefits? 12
