Install TurningPoint TurningPoint 2008 can be installed from UWSP s campus Network Menu on any Standard Campus Load PC. The Network menu path is: Start > All Programs > Network Menu > Utilities > Local Program Installations > TurningTechnologies > TurningPoint 2008 Setup TurningPoint for home use and Macs is also a free download from the TurningTechnologies website at: 2. Open TurningPoint This will open PowerPoint with the TurningPoint toolbar. Important: You must first open TurningPoint2008 before you can create a new TurningPoint Presentation or to convert an existing PowerPoint to a TurningPoint polling show. To do this: Double-click the TurningPoint2008 icon on your computer Desktop. - or - Go to Start, All Programs, mouse over TurningTechnologies LLC, mouse over TurningPoint 2008, and then select TurningPoint Once TurningPoint is open, you will see a blank PowerPoint title slide. A TurningPoint Toolbar will display in the top toolbar area. What s so special about the TurningPoint toolbar? The TurningPoint toolbar is used to create interactive, polling slides. The PowerPoint toolbars and menu items are also available, allowing you to use familiar tools like design templates, and formatting. TurningPoint Toolbar Teaching & Learning Resource Network (TLRN, 2007) 1
3. Save Your New TurningPoint Presentation Always save work frequently. Your TurningPoint file will actually save as a PowerPoint (.ppt) file. It is opening the file within TurningPoint that adds the polling interactivity. A good practice is to save your TurningPoint presentations to your myfiles server space into the Private folder. What is myfiles? Each UWSP student and faculty/staff member has a dedicated server space ( myfiles ) that they can access from any campus computer that is a standard campus load. Why the Private folder? Files saved to myfiles can only be saved into the Private folder or to folders you create within Private. I want to do this because? saving TurningPoint files to your myfiles space allows you to save presentations you create on your office computer, then access the same files when you log into your the classroom computer. Why is this important? Remote Access won t work for a TurningPoint session. The receiver that gathers student responses must be plugged into your classroom computer. This means that you must use the software that is installed locally, not the software on your office desktop. On the PowerPoint Menu bar, a. Click File, then Save As b. Click the Save In down arrow and select your myfiles drive: ( where <user> will be your username). c. Open your Private folder and Save. Files saved to your myfiles space MUST be saved into the Private folder. a. Select your myfiles space b. Save to your private folder > TurningPoint only adds extra functionality to PowerPoint presentations. You will still use your original PowerPoint tools to do things like add a background design for your slides (Format > Slide Design ), or add slides that will not be used for polling questions. Teaching & Learning Resource Network (TLRN, 2007) 2
4. Add a TurningPoint Polling Slide To add an interactive polling slide, a. Click Insert Slide on the TurningPoint toolbar and select a chart to display your polling data. b. Type in your question where it says Enter question text c. Type in each answer as a separate bullet point. d. When you finish the last answer, click outside of the bulleted section. The graph will update. e. Save. Tip: get in the habit of saving files frequently to minimize the possibility of losing work. Ctrl + S is a quick keyboard shortcut to Save. Teaching & Learning Resource Network (TLRN, 2007) 3
5. Reset Your TurningPoint Presentation Before you use your presentation for actual polling, or to test with simulated data (bullet 5 below), you will want to Reset. Reset can be found on the TurningPoint Toolbar. a. Click Reset on the left side of the TurningPoint toolbar. You will see three options. Session: Selecting Session will clear all previous polling data and prompt you to save existing polling responses to a TurningPoint Session data file (.tpz). A.tpz Session file can be used to generate reports from saved polling data. If you do not save session data, it will be discarded. Resetting a session is a good choice if polling data has accumulated from a simulated session or a class polling session and if you do not need to save the polling data. Current Slide: Selecting Current Slide will clear all responses for the selected slide. Responses are not discarded and can be retrieved as a part of the Session data. All Slides: Selecting All Slides will clear all responses for the entire show. Responses are not discarded and can be retrieved as a part of the Session data Important (and really useful) tip: Being able to reset the Current Slide and re-poll without losing prior responses is a great way to determine whether additional class discussion clarifies concepts or changes opinion. To reset and re-poll a slide in Slide Show view, click the Reset button - > on the TurningPoint ShowBar. 6. Test With Simulated Data You do not need a clicker and receiver to test your polling show. TurningPoint provides you with simulated responses for testing purposes. To test with simulated data, b. On the TurningPoint toolbar, open the Response Devices drop down menu and select, Simulated Data. c. Go to PowerPoint s Slide Show View to a polling slide. On the ShowBar at the upper-right, polling will display as Open, and simulated responses will display below Responses. d. Click once to invoke each object (such as an added Countdown indicator) and to close polling and view the chart distribution of simulated responses. Tips: Press Escape (Esc) on the keyboard to leave Slide Show View and return to edit mode. Shortcuts Press the F5 key to display the first slide of your presentation in Slide Show view. Press Shift+F5 to begin the Slide Show from the selected slide. Teaching & Learning Resource Network (TLRN, 2007) 4
7. Polling Your Students To poll your students open your polling show within TurningPoint 2008, reset your presentation (if needed - Bullet 4), and go to Slide Show view just as you would to run a PowerPoint presentation. About the TurningPoint Keypads (a.k.a. student clickers ) TurningPoint keypads do not have to be turned on or off. They are always On, though their default state is just sleeping. When students respond to polling questions by selecting the buttons, 1/A, 2/B, the clicker momentarily wakes up to send a response and then goes back to sleep until the next command is received. In Slide Show view, TurningPoint places a ShowBar at the upper-right of the screen. Toolbar when polling is open Students respond to a polling question when polling:open displays on the TurningPoint ShowBar. Total responses from student keypads will display under responses:. Students can change their answers at any time when polling is open. This will overwrite their prior response. To close polling left-click the mouse on the active polling slide. Once polling is closed, student responses will display in the chart selected for that slide. Toolbar when polling is closed Caution - when Mouse-clicking in TurningPoint Just as in PowerPoint, while your TurningPoint show is running, each mouse-click will trigger the next action, such as invoking additional objects you may have added such as a Countdown or Correct Answer Indicator, or moving to a new slide. Teaching & Learning Resource Network (TLRN, 2007) 5
Extras Add Polling Slides to an Existing PowerPoint Show You can easily add a TurningPoint polling slide to any existing PowerPoint. To do this, a. Open TurningPoint b. On the PowerPoint Menu bar, click File, Open c. Select and open your existing PowerPoint. Make sure that the slides are in Normal View (View > Normal). d. Move to the slide after which you would like to insert a Polling slide. New Polling slides, like regular PowerPoint slides, add after the currently displayed slide. e. On the TurningPoint Toolbar, click Insert Slide and select a chart slide. Convert Bulleted PowerPoint slides to TurningPoint Polling Slides To convert existing PowerPoint slides to an interactive polling slide, a. Open TurningPoint. b. Click File on the Menu bar, then Open your existing PowerPoint file inside TurningPoint. c. Your slides are now in open design view. View the slide you would like to convert. On the TurningPoint toolbar, d. Select Insert Object and mouse over Charts. e. Select a chart style. Your slide will update to become a new polling slide. Set Correct Answers for Polling Data TurningPoint has the ability to generate total scores for student responses. To do this, you must tell TurningPoint which is the correct answer on each slide. In design view for the polling slide, a. Select/Highlight the correct answer from the bulleted answers b. Right-click on the selected answer to open a shortcut menu. c. From the short-cut menu, select Correct Answer. Important: This only tells TurningPoint which answer is correct. To show your students the correct answer, you will need to set a Correct Answer Indicator. Set a Correct Answer Indicator for Student View You can set a correct answer indicator that displays after polling is closed for a slide. Note: you must first set the answer as correct (above). In design view for the polling slide, a. Select/highlight the correct answer. Teaching & Learning Resource Network (TLRN, 2007) 6
b. On the TurningPoint Toolbar, click Insert Object, and mouse over Correct Answer Indicator. c. Select an indicator to display next to the correct answer when polling is closed. Add Additional Objects to Polling Slides You can also add additional objects such as a Response Counter and Countdown Indicator. In design view for the polling slide, a. Select Insert Object from the TurningPoint toolbar. b. Select an object from the list. Teaching & Learning Resource Network (TLRN, 2007) 7
