1 GIMP Zombies Open up GIMP and load your image: Many thanks to: Women-A/angelina-jolie/angelinajolie-120.jpg.html Go to Layer New Layer The following window appears: Select Transparency and click the OK button. Now click the Mode down arrow. Page 1

2 Select Saturation: Make sure your Foreground Colour is black: Now click on the Paintbrush Tool and click the Brush down arrow here: Select a soft brush such as this: Page 2

3 You may have to adjust the size of the brush by using the Scale slider: Now paint over the skin: Once you have done this adjust the Opacity so its around 70. This makes the face less a manufactured white and more a human pale. Make sure you have the new layer selected and go to Layer Merge Down. Page 3

4 Now go to Layer New Layer and select Transparency: Click the OK button. Make sure you are on the Background Layer. Click on the Paintbrush Tool and press your finger down on the CTRL key and click on a white area of an eye You should notice that the Foreground Colour has now changed to the white of the eye: Make sure you are on the New Layer. Now use the Paintbrush Tool and paint over the eyes: Page 4

5 Again, lower the Opacity to the 70 s or 80 s so that you can see a little more of the eyes: Now go to Layer Merge Down Make a new layer by going to Layer New layer and selecting Transparency. Make sure you have the New Layer selected: Make sure you have a black Foreground Colour: Click on the Paintbrush Tool the eyes like this: and paint a border around Now go to Filters Blur Gaussian Blur The following window appears: Move these sliders until you see what you have just painted. Set the Horizontal and Vertical values to about 20. Page 5

6 Now click the OK button. I wasn t happy that the effect was strong enough, so I went to Filters Repeat Gaussian Blur. (You might not have to do this - it depends on your picture). Now click on the Eraser Tool and delete the blur that is inside the eyes: Again I took the Opacity down to the 70 s: Now do a Google search for Gimp blood brushes (the ones you find in Deviantart are usually very good). Once you have found good brushes, you will need to install them. Firstly download the brushes. Typically they download in a folder like this: bloodstains_gimp.zip. This is a zipped folder meaning that it is compressed. We will need to unzip it i.e. uncompress it. Right click on the folder and select Extract All A window appears asking where you want the unzipped folder to be saved. Decide on a location and then click on the Extract button. A folder will like this will appear: Double click on this folder and you will see something like this: Page 6

7 Double click on the Gimp Brushes folder and you will see something like this: Go to Edit Select All. And then go to Edit Copy. Now go to Start Computer and then C: drive. In C drive you will find a folder called Program Files. Double click on this folder and scroll till you see a folder called GIMP-2.0. Double click on this and find a folder called Share. Double click on this and find a folder called gimp. Double click on this and find a folder called 2.0. Double click on this and find a folder called Brushes. Now go to Edit Paste. The brushes will now be installed. You will have to save your work and exit out of GIMP and then load it up again to make use of the brushes. Make sure you save your work as a.xcf file otherwise you will no be able to work on it properly. The path: C:/Program Files/GIMP-2.0/Share/gimp/2.0/brushes Make sure you have the Background layer selected. Page 7

8 Click on the Dodge Burn Tool Burn radio button: and select the Click the arrow here to select a Blood brush: Now repeatedly click over the skin to get the effect: Make sure you have the Dodge Burn Tool still selected. Choose a round brush and go round the eyes again to make them a little darker: Page 8

9 Make sure you have the New Layer selected: Click on the Paintbrush Tool and select one of your blood splatter brushes: Change the Foreground Colour to a red by double clicking here: The following window appears: Type in in the HTML notation box. Click the OK button. Now paint over and beside one corner of the lip: Page 9

10 Now click on the Eraser Tool and rub some of the splatter out by clicking on it: The final result: Remember to go to Layer Merge Down to finish off. Page 10
