Scanning Protocol: Cyberware Model 15 By Caley M. Orr, School of Human Evolution and Social Change Scanning 1. Turn on scanner THEN computer (important). Red light on the scanner and black Cyberware box should be on. 2. Open Cydir software by double clicking icon on desktop. 3. Open a directory for the scans as shown below: This white triangle opens up directory list. Start a new directory if necessary. Clicking this box allows you to move up in the directory. Always use this file naming scheme: <Genus>/<Museum#>/<#####>_< element>_<species abbrev>_<side&sex> An example is given in the box. Click on select 4. Open subdirectories and open scanner Guee window as shown here: Click on white triangle Type in name of first subdirectory and hit enter Click on white triangle Click on scan Next page
5. Open scanner and set scan parameters as shown: Type in number of scans (always use 24) and hit enter. Click on the Open button Set appropriate width (use slider to set to intermediate widths): 75mm should work for most, but larger ones may need wider scans Other parameters: always use Pitch = 0.25 Surface = dark Texture = Luminance 6. Set up specimen as shown: 7. Do first scan of object: Click on Scan button. If asked if you want to Home the scanner, click yes
8. When first scan is complete, set up a second subdirectory for the second scan of the object: Note: do not exit Guee window yet. Click on + button to open second subdirectory. Type in file name and hit enter Click on white triangle (shown as grey here) Click on scan button. The new file name will appear in the Guee window 8. Set up second scan by reorienting specimen as shown below. 9. Do second scan by clicking on scan button. You DO NOT need to open the scanner again or reset the scan parameters between the first and second scans of the same object. Important: When scanning a NEW specimen, exit the GUEE window by clicking on Exit button. Then, turn off the scanner, wait seconds and turn it back on again. Open up a new Cydir window if you want to scan a new specimen while editing the one you just scanned (see below). Repeat the steps.
Editing the scans: 1. Open up the Cypie window as shown: Click on the Merge button for the file you want to edit. This will open the Cypie window as shown in the next step. 2. Check your scans and begin editing. Cypie will show you the individual passes the laser took to make the current scan. These are listed here. For 24 scans it should run from scan000 to scan345 at intervals of 15. Make sure they re all there. Start voiding scans by clicking Void and the All button. This process is described in full below.
3. Void scans Use left mouse button to draw over the scan to edit out the unneeded parts. The size of the paintbrush can be adjusted by using the sliding bar Clear will clear the entire screen, or holding down shift while pressing the left mouse button will erase where you paint. When you have finished with all of the scans, it will return you to the Cypie screen. 4. Eat and despike scans Click on Eat and then All and it will automatically eat around the edges of each scan. Do the same thing with the Despike function 5. Merge the individual scans. Click on auto align and scroll through the cross-sections to make sure they look ok (i.e., no edges sticking out or floating pieces). Click off the Mid and Low boxes and hen click on Merge Click View to check out the merged file to make sure it looks ok.
6. Edit the scans from the second orientation and merge them. Follow the same instructions as above for the second scan. In the example, this would be rad2. Click on Merge for this file. Merge the final scans: 1. Open the CyEat window In the Cydir window, click on the Align and Merge button. 2. Load the appropriate files When you open the CyEat console this warning message will flash at you twice. Ignore it and click ok. This is because it is trying to load the lores and midres files, which you didn t create. We only care about the hires. Click on the blue triangle to open the CyEat Controls Click on the High Button Click on the red triangle in the upper corner to close this panel. The hires files of each orientation are now loaded (see below).
3. Align the hires files When the hires files are first loaded they will be unaligned as in the picture to the right. You can rotate the pair by holding down the left mouse button. You can rotate one of the scans by holding down the spacebar along with the left mouse button. Pressing the S button will generate a surface for the scans. First, click on the Guess button in the CyEat window. Second, click on the Refine button. Check out the alignment to make sure it looks ok. If so, click on final and recheck the alignment. Click off the Mid and Low boxes again. Click Merge Click View to view the final merged hires file to make sure it s ok. You may occasionally have to manually align the scans. Do so by aligning them using the mouse commands described above and then click off the Mid and Low boxes and merge. Rename the hires.ply file: Close out of Cydir and go into the folder where the scan you just completed is located. Change the name of the hires.ply file using this naming convention: <#####>_<element>_<species abbrev>_<side&sex>
