4 ABOUT ADOBE PREMIER PRO CS6 Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 software combines incredible performance with a sleek, revamped user interface and a host of fantastic new creative features, including Warp Stabilizer for stabilizing footage, dynamic timeline trimming, expanded multi-cam editing, adjustment layers, and more. It runs on 64-bit Mac OS and 64-bit Windows. SETTING ADOBE PREMIER PRO CS6 PREFERENCES FOR THE FUSION IOFX Before configuring Adobe Premier Pro CS6 to work with your iofx card, you must have successfully installed the iofx drivers and formatted the iofx using your disk management tools. For details on completing these tasks, see the iofx User Guide. This document takes you through the process of configuring Premier Pro to utilize your Fusion iofx device. In this configuration process you will 1. Create a new Premier Pro project. 2. Edit General Preferences to set the location for Adobe Premier Pro's Media Cache and Media Cache Database as well as the Scratch Disk locations for your projects. 3. Set options for optimizing your footage for editing and playback in Premier Pro. CREATING A NEW ADOBE PREMIER PRO PROJECT 1. Start Adobe Premier Pro. 2. In the "Welcome to Adobe Premier Pro" window, choose New Project. 3. The "New Project" dialog appears, where you can set up the location for your project to be stored. 2

5 4. Click Browse in the bottom right-hand corner of the dialog. Now you need to select the destination path for your new project to be stored in this instance, it is located on the iofx. 5. Select the Fusion io memory device, in this case it is called iomemory (F:). 6. Click "Make new Folder to create a folder to house your project. 7. Name your folder with your project name (in this case, My Premier Project". 8. Click OK to choose this as the destination path for your new project. 3

6 9. Name the project as Project Click OK. The New Sequence Dialog appears, where you can choose from the available presets to determine the dimensions, frame rate, audio settings, etc., for your new project. 11. Choose a name for your new timeline Sequence, such as Sequence 01 and click OK. 4

7 SETTING UP THE MEDIA CACHE AND MEDIA CACHE DATABASE 1. In Premier Pro, choose Edit > Preferences > Media to set the location for the Media Cache Files and the Media Cache Database. While it is not necessary to put this data on your iofx device, doing so adds no significant overhead relative to playback of media. You may place these files to suit your needs; here the F: drive is Fusion-io device. 5

8 2. To set the Media Cache Files location click the "Browse..." button in the Media Cache Files box. A dialog appears so you can select a drive location and create a new folder to place your Media Cache Files. The folder created in this example is called Adobe Cache Folder, but you can choose your own name for it. 3. Name the directory and click OK to create the new directory and set the location for your Media Cache files. Premier automatically creates a folder inside this called "Media Cache Files". 6

9 Next, you can choose the directory to store the Media Cache Database. 4. Click Browse in the Media Cache Database box to set the location. A dialog appears so you can select a drive location and create a new folder to place your Media Cache Database Files. Although you can choose where to place the Media Cache Database, this example uses the same location as the Media Cache Files in the previous step ("Adobe Cache Folder") 5. Click OK to automatically create a folder called "Media Cache" in the chosen directory. This is where your Media Cache Database will be stored. Configuring Scratch Disk Settings You can configure Premier Pro to use the Fusion iofx for a scratch disk, which offers a substantial performance advantage over using a hard disk. 1. Choose Project > Project Settings > Scratch Disks. 7

10 The Project Settings dialog allows you to assign the specific path for Captured Video, Captured Audio, Video Previews and Audio Previews. You can choose from several different options: Custom sets a specific directory to be used, Documents uses the Windows Users directories based on who is logged into the machine. Same as Project uses the project directory for all four scratch disk locations. 2. For this example, select Same as Project, which means the scratch disks will use the path F:\My Premier Project. 3. Click OK to finish setting the Scratch Disk paths. 8

11 GETTING OPTIMAL PLAYBACK FROM THE FUSION IOFX When editing, you have basically two options for the media that you are going to edit: Edit Audio Video Interleave files, such as AVI, MPEG or QuickTime. Edit a series of stills, such as.dpx files and discreet audio. Each of these options has its own advantages and disadvantages. If you are editing files from DSLR cameras, you are most likely bringing in H.264 AVI's or QuickTime files. With a good workstation and GPU, you should be able to handle quite a few simultaneous streams of 720P or even 1080P footage. 4K and 5K footage from cameras such as the RED EPIC can be easily edited at 1/2 quality, which is typically higher resolution than most monitors will display. 2K RED.R3D files typically cannot be played back at full quality without the assistance of a hardware decoder/de-bayering card like the REDRocket. If you transcode your.r3d file to a series of uncompressed.dpx files, you can easily edit these uncompressed files at full resolution in Adobe Premier Pro CS6 from your iofx. 9
