1 Backup then Download Data file When copying content from one Moodle course to a new semester s course, an instructor must complete three tasks: 1. Backup the original course s content, WITHOUT user data (save to restore to a blank shell) 2. Backup the original course s content WITH user data (save for potential student grade challenges) 3. Download the data files to an external secure storage device (this file will be utilized in the restore process) Backup Original Course Content Without UserData 1. Go to the homepage of the Moodle course to be copied. 2. Under Administration, click Backup. 3. The Backup: Initial Settings window will appear. It is IMPORTANT to UNCHECK the box (Include enrolled users) 4. Click Next
2 5. The Schema settings screen will display. By default all activities and resources are checked. At this screen uncheck any activities and resources that you do not want to include in your backup for future courses. 6. Scroll to the bottom and click Next 7. The confirmation and review window will display, you can confirm that you excluded user data and included all activities/resources. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and click Perform Backup 8. Depending on how large your class content is, will determine the wait time. Do not close the open window or press navigation buttons until the backup is complete. Once the backup is complete you will see the confirmation screen. Click Continue
3 9. The restore screen will display and at this point you need to download your file to an external storage device such as a flash drive. Any previous backups that you have performed will be listed, if you haven t backup before you will only your current backup. 10. Locate the most current backup file in the User private backup area and click the Download link 11. At the file download window click Save on a PC or select the save option and click OK on a MAC PC MAC
4 12. a. On a PC at the Save As window locate your flash drive from the drop down list and click SAVE. A file will be suggested however use the following naming convention to help identify your file (semester_year_without_user_data). Click SAVE, The download process will start. b. On a MAC your document will automatically download into the downloads folder, you can locate it by clicking on the download arrow in your toolbar. Click on the magnifying glass to open the folder. Then right click on the file and select rename and use the following naming convention (semester_year_without_user_data.mbz). Hit return on your keyboard. c. On a MAC you will also need to move your file to the flash drive manually by click, hold and drag to the desired location (holding the file over the flash drive in the left hand menu will open the drive, and you can hold the file over folders if you desire to place it in a specific folder.
