1 Vanishing Flagpole (An Adobe Photo Shop CS5 Project) Now you see it. Now you don t Getting Started 1) Download the files needed for this project 2) Unzip the flagpole folder then delete the zipped file. 3) Make a new folder for this project. Name it 08-yourusername-Flagpole 4) Open Photo Shop. Part 1 Making the Flagpole Disappear 5) Open the image named phs located in the assets folder. 6) Double-click on the Hand tool to get the maximum view. 7) Select the Clone Stamp tool (looks like a rubber stamp). 8) Right-click on the picture. When the Brush palette pops open, set the brush size to 20 pixels. Set hardness to 0%. 9) Click on the gray bar at the top of the picture to close the box. 10) Move your cursor over a section of the sky next to the flagpole. Make sure none of the flagpole is inside the bounding area (the little circle) of your cursor. Also, it is best if your cursor is over the sky and as far away from any other object on the picture as possible. 11) Hold down the ALT key and while holding the ALT key click once on the sky. This takes a sample of the pixel colors in the sky. Page 1 of 6

2 12) Move your cursor to the top of the flagpole and drag down a little bit. The flagpole should disappear. If you drag down too far, you will start getting streaks. If this happens, just do Edit -> Undo Clone Stamp and try it again. 13) File Save. It will become Photoshop file.. 08-yourusername-flagpole.psd 14) Continue taking samples of the sky using the Alt key then dragging down on the flagpole making it disappear until you get to the top of the trees. 15) When you get to the trees, take a sample of the trees (hold ALT and click over the trees) and stamp the trees over the flagpole. It might work better this time if you just click several times on the flagpole instead of dragging. Get a resample whenever needed. 16) Zoom in couple of times on the roof. 17) Take a sample of roof and stamp over the flagpole. You will probably need to resize the Clone Stamp tool. Key shortcut: use the closing bracket ( [ ) key to decrease the size of the brush. 18) When you get to the building windows, take a sample of window and stamp over the flagpole. You will need to use a very small brush to take the sample. Frequent resamples help as well. 19) When you get to the bush, take a sample of the bush and stamp over the flagpole. The flagpole should now be gone. 20) Double-click on the Zoom tool. This is 100% real-size view. 21) Double-click on the Hand tool. Part 2 Making the Sidewalk Disappear Using the Clone Stamp Tool 22) Use the same technique to make the stone sidewalk (lower left corner of picture) disappear. The portion of the sidewalk that is next to grass should be replaced with grass. The portion of the sidewalk next to dirt should be replaced with dirt. You can probably use more of a painting motion on this one. 23) Double-click on the Zoom tool. 24) Save the file 25) Save As a jpg named flagpole in your project folder. 26) Close this picture but leave Photoshop open for Part 2. 3 Part 3 Making the Sidewalk Disappear Using Content Aware 27) Open the same phs picture that you used in Parts 1 & 2. 28) Double-click on the Hand tool. 29) Select the Lasso tool and lasso the stone sidewalk. 30) Edit Fill, then make sure it is set to use Content Aware. Click OK. 31) Select Deselect. 32) Double-click on the Zoom tool. 33) Save this a jpg in your project folder. Name it flagpole2. Content Aware is Photoshop s best guess as how to make the sidewalk disappear. It is a little easier than the Clone Stamp tool, but I think the quality is better with the Clone Stamp tool. I could not get good quality making the flagpole disappear with Content Aware. You can try it if you like. If you succeed, let me know. Part 4 Changing the Color of a Heart 1) Open the picture named bears and hearts located inside the assets folder. 2) Select the Rectangular Marquee tool. 3) Draw a rectangular marquee around the heart that is farthest to the right. (See Illustration below.) Page 3 of 6

4 4) Image Adjustments Replace Color. 5) Move the Replace Color box so that you can see the selected heart (if needed). 6) On the Replace Color box, select the Eyedropper tool. 7) Click once on the selected heart in the photo. The preview box in the replace color box should start to get white wherever red appears within the selection. We want this to get completely white wherever red is and completely black everywhere else. 8) On the Replace Color box, select the Eyedropper + tool (the middle one). 9) Put your mouse cursor over the selected heart in the photo. Click and drag around being careful to stay over just the heart. If you touch outside the boundaries of the heart, you will need to start this process over again. 10) Continue dragging until the heart is completely white and the surrounding area is black in the preview box of the replace color box. You can let up on the mouse and click again as many times as you want. (There will be a little bit of white outside the heart where the red bow tie is at.) 11) At the bottom of the Replace Color box are three triangular sliders. The top one is for changing the hue. Slide this one around and watch the heart in the photo. Slide it to any color other than red. 12) Use the Fuzziness slider to adjust the color so it is not fuzzy around the edges. 13) Click OK. 14) Select Deselect. 15) Since one of the bow ties was inside the selection box, it also changed color. To change it back to its original red do the following steps: a. Select the History brush. b. Paint the bow tie. You do not need to be careful about staying within the lines on the bow tie as it will only change the portion that was changed previously. Page 4 of 6

5 16) Using the Clone Stamp tool, make the teddy bear that is front middle disappear. It is best to take the sample of grass as far away from the other objects as possible. The best location to take the sample is the bottom center of the picture. You can almost use the Clone Stamp tool as a paint brush this time. Also, you may try to make the teddy bear disappear using Content Aware, but I was not successful doing that. (See illustration below to know which teddy bear is a goner.) 17) Change the color of the heart in the back using the technique that you used earlier. (See illustration below to know which heart to change the color.) 18) Save this as a jpg in your vanishing folder. Name it bears. Part 5 Removing a Logo from a Picture of Giraffes Open the picture located inside your assets folder named giraffe. Using the Clone Stamp tool, remove the white oval at the bottom of the picture. The picture should look as natural as possible. Save the final version as a jpeg named giraffe in project folder. Page 5 of 6

6 Part 6 Practicing these New Techniques on a Picture of a Farm 1) Open the picture located in the assets folder named farm. 2) Change the color of the pond to green. 3) Change the color of the shed that the cat is on top of to blue, but do not change the color of any of the chickens or any of the other objects near the building. (You will have to include the chicken in the rectangular marquee that encloses the shed. 4) Since the chicken has reddish colors, it will turn blue when you change the shed s color. Simply select the history brush and paint the chicken. It will go back to regular chicken colors. You do not even need to stay within the lines when you paint the chicken.) 5) Make the yellow chicks disappear. 6) Make the cow that is standing in the barn doorway coming out disappear. 7) Save the final version as a jpg named farm in your project folder. Checklist for Part 6: the pond is green the shed is blue the rooster by the shed is not blue or bluish the chicks are gone the cow coming out of the barn is gone When you are finished with all four parts, copy and paste the project folder from your Desktop to your Network Home.
