Photo Mechanic ReadMe Thank you for purchasing or evaluating Photo Mechanic 4, from Camera Bits, Inc. Photo Mechanic 4 has been designed to take advantage of the advanced features provided by the Microsoft Windows XP and Mac OS X operating systems. On Windows, Photo Mechanic 4 requires Windows XP or Windows If you are using Windows 98, 95, or ME, you will need to upgrade to Windows XP in order to use Photo Mechanic 4. On a Mac, Photo Mechanic requires Mac OS X or higher (although some features such as Spotlight searching require Mac OS X 10.4). Photo Mechanic s advanced design requires the modern operating system services that are only available with Windows XP/2000 and Mac OS X. This ReadMe file contains updated version information. Please read the software license agreement presented during the installation process. If you do not agree to this license agreement, then don't use the software. Version Information Version Added Lexar Active Memory features for Ingest. Ingest settings, including the IPTC Stationery Pad, can be saved into the Active Memory of Lexar AMS cards and later retrieved automatically by Photo Mechanic when the cards are inserted into a card reader. This provides for advanced workflows, especially in event photography with multiple photographers and memory cards. (Win) Fixed a bug in the Navigator that was causing instability and numerous crashes for some users. (Win) Fixed a bug in the Favorites that was causing multi-folder favorites to fail when there were more than two folders in the favorite. (Win) Fixed a bug in Favorites renaming that would not update the internal favorite name. This caused Photo Mechanic to open the parent folder of the favorite when double-clicking on the renamed favorite. Added a fix to preserve Canon DPP recipes that are appended to Canon RAW files (e.g. CR2). Photo Mechanic now places its image preferences (for tag, color class, rotation, etc) into Canon RAW files so that that they don t interfere with Canon s placement of recipe data. Photo Mechanic will now honor the XMP read preference when updating IPTC/XMP in TIFF-based RAW photos in order to provide for better compatibility with Adobe s Camera Raw (ACR) plug-in. If a TIFF-based RAW photo has an associated XMP sidecar file with ACR settings, and your IPTC/XMP read preferences are set to read XMP sidecar files before embedded XMP, then any IPTC/XMP updates to the RAW photo with Photo Mechanic will now transfer the ACR settings from the XMP sidecar into the embedded XMP so that ACR will find its settings when it reads the embedded XMP. You may need to change your IPTC/XMP read preferences for TIFF-based RAW files to make sure that XMP sidecar files are read before embedded XMP. Added an option to erase disks after Ingest.

Added an option to shield (or darken) the area outside of the crop in the Preview dialog. (Mac) Aqua focus rings are now used in the Contact Sheet and Preview panes (Mac) Dialogs with Yes, No, Cancel, and Retry buttons now respond to keyboard shortcuts Command-Y, Command-N, Esc, and Command-R respectively. Improved Code Replacement parsing to better handle undefined codes. (Win) Fixed problem with Code Replacement preventing the addition of new strings to word lists. Version (Mac) Changed the compiler optimization back to the settings in 4.4. We used a compiler optimization setting in that was reportedly what Apple uses, but this caused bad code generation on the PowerPC, causing the Find and the Find and Replace commands to crash Photo Mechanic. (Mac) Code replacement now accepts accented characters for the code and for the replacement strings. (Win) Fixed a bug that would cause Photo Mechanic to crash when dragging photos or folders outside of Photo Mechanic. Version Photo Mechanic now requires Mac OS X or (Mac) Photo Mechanic is now a Universal Binary so it runs natively on Intel-based Macs. The Revert TIFF-based RAW to original command now has an option to backup a photo s existing IPTC/XMP (e.g. embedded by Photo Mechanic 4.4+) into an XMP sidecar file. Update IPTC/XMP now synchronizes the tag and color class between a RAW+JPEG pair. RAW+JPEG can now join across folders. Add the folder containing RAW photos to a contact sheet along with the folder containing JPEG photos. If the names match then the RAW and JPEG photos can be joined as RAW+JPEG pairs. This is very useful for the Update IPTC/XMP command and image preferences like tag and color class. Fixed problems with certain variables used for folder naming in Ingest. (Win) Fixed several problems and made improvements to the Favorites and Navigator panes. Fixed a problem with drag & drop to Favorites folder not copying to the correct folder. Mapped network drives are now queried for mount status before adding to Navigator and Favorites to prevent system error dialogs. Creating a new folder in the Navigator now makes the folder visible and selects it for renaming. Drag reordering of Favorites now shows an insertion indicator. Navigator now works properly with Cut/Copy/Paste of folders. Navigator should automatically refresh when changes to the file system occur outside of Photo Mechanic. Navigator no longer expands paths on double-click of a folder. Added a new Remember folders... command that remembers the state of a multi-folder contact sheet as a Favorite that can later be launched. Added a checkbox to Contact Sheet pane of the Preferences dialog that allows you to turn off the generation of high-quality thumbnails for speedy browsing of large TIFF photos.

Fixed a problem where some photos would be skipped when performing lossless JPEG rotation. Exif thumbnails are now updated for Save As with the JPEG format. Sidecar files for Bibble, Raw Developer, and LightZone are attached with RAW files and copied, rename, and deleted with the RAW file. IPTC Info navigates through visible items only, and it navigates through selected items only if the photo on entry is selected and more than one photo is selected. IPTC Info navigation now makes sure that the Contact Sheet that it came from scrolls to keep the current photo visible on screen. Added a Code Replacement feature to the IPTC dialogs. By selecting and loading a tab-delimited text file with a list of codes and corresponding replacement text strings, you can enter \code\ and Photo Mechanic will replace this with the corresponding replacement text. FTP As now has better support for FTP servers that don t allow PWD command. Added a JPEG size estimator to the Send Photos via dialog. Brought back the (Mac) Command-Ctrl-F1 through Command-Ctrl-F9 or (Win) Shift+F1 through Shift+F9 keyboard shortcuts for filtering individual color classes. F1 views all color classes. Added keyboard shortcuts for Select Rotated and Select Others (invert). Source and destination paths are refreshed after drag and drop copy/move to Navigator and Favorites folders. Locked files that are copied or ingested are now unlocked on the destination. Fixed several minor crop tool annoyances when cropping in zoom mode. Added new preference for dealing with malformed JPEGs that have multiple IPTC records (which are created by other programs). You can choose to read/update the first or the last IPTC record (previously Photo Mechanic would only recognize the last IPTC record). IPTC records formatted as UTF-8 are now recognized. IPTC category lists with illegal UTF-8 encodings no longer hangs PM when clicking on the popup menus in the IPTC dialogs. You can now select and change or select and delete items from the IPTC Stationery Lists editor when the words have illegal character sequences in them (characters replaced by '?'). Fixed a problem when captioning malformed JPEG photos that have duplicate Photoshop markers or IPTC records in the Exif block (e.g. from LightRoom). Fixed a problem with the Revert TIFF-based RAW to original command for certain TIFF-based RAW formats that have malformed IPTC blocks. Improved speed of captioning large PSD files. Fixed problems captioning certain PSD files. Fixed a problem with certain photos that had incomplete resolution info when using the Set Resolution tool. Fixed a problem with adjusting capture date/times on Nikon NEF files. (Mac) Fixed problems with setting Photo Mechanic as the application to launch for Image Capture. (Mac) Tab key now toggles selection between preview panes in 2-up modes. (Mac) Added 'Esc' key shortcut to close FTP Progress window.

(Win) Fixed problems with Color Class Filter widget when mouse is released outside the bounds of the control. (Mac) Having the Favorites/Navigator pane collapsed in Contact Sheet windows no longer causes a slowdown. (Win) Added a new spelling checker that has several language-specific dictionaries. (Win) Fixed highlighting problem when tabbing between IPTC fields and improved tab ordering logic. (Win) Added double-buffered drawing of the thumbnails in the IPTC dialogs and Adjust Capture Times dialog. (Win) Alt+] and Alt+[ now work as advertised in the IPTC Info dialog for Save & -> and Save & <-. Version 4.4 Photo Mechanic now requires Mac OS X 10.3 or Photo Mechanic can now embed and update XMP in addition to IPTC in JPEG, TIFF, Photoshop PSD, and TIFF-based RAW formats (Canon 1D TIFF and CR2, Nikon NEF, Olympus ORF, Epson ERF, and Adobe DNG). For RAW formats, Photo Mechanic can also create and update XMP sidecar files. IPTC-related fields in XMP follow the IPTC.org IPTC4XMP guidelines for maximum compatibility. Because most RAW formats are proprietary and various RAW processing programs may be sensitive to modifications in RAW files, Photo Mechanic uses a new technology called Caption Safe that can undo captioning edits made to TIFF-based RAW photos in order to restore the RAW photos to their original state. Added the ability to ingest from folders in addition to ingesting from disks, and the ability to incrementally ingest photos so that only newly added photos are copied. Also added the option to verify copied photos, and additional filtering options for ingesting only RAW/non-RAW and/or locked/unlocked photos. (Mac) Added Spotlight searching. The search results are displayed in a contact sheet so that Photo Mechanic can work with the found photos. The searches can be saved as Favorites items so they can be executed or edited when desired. A contact sheet can now view the contents of multiple folders. From the Navigator and Favorites views, use the Shift (Windows) or Option (Mac) key and double-click on a folder to add its contents to the current contact sheet. Option-drag from the Mac Finder will also add the folder to the destination contact sheet. (Mac) Added the ability to burn photos to CD or DVD without having to first rearrange photos in folders to fit under the capacity limit for CD and DVD discs. Photo Mechanic will automatically split the source photos across multiple CD / DVD discs as needed according to the capacity of the recording media and the number of photos selected for burning. Added a new Tools menu with the following useful tools: o Adjust Capture Times tool for fixing erroneous camera capture dates and times due to changes in time zones, for example. Photos from multiple cameras can be synchronized by taking a photo of a common clock, and then entering the time of that photo for each camera. o Update IPTC/XMP tool for updating existing archives of IPTC-captioned photos or for synchronizing IPTC/XMP data for RAW+JPEG pairs. For example, IPTC

metadata can be transferred from JPEG to RAW photos (or vice-versa), from XMP sidecar files into embedded IPTC, or from Macintosh IPTC-NAA resources into embedded IPTC/XMP for cross-platform compatibility. o Revert TIFF-based RAW to original tool for undoing any captioning edits made to TIFF-based RAW files (using Caption Safe ). o Mask/Unmask tool for hiding Exif, IPTC, XMP, and ICC profiles. This can be useful for diagnosing workflow problems or compatibility with other software. o Change Resolution tool for changing the resolution value of existing tags (e.g. DPI). o Embed ICC profiles into JPEGs is the same tool from previous Photo Mechanic versions but moved into the Tools menu. o Lossless JPEG Rotation tool for modifying the image to reflect its soft rotation. This is the only command in Photo Mechanic that will modify an original photo s pixels. o Extract JPEG Previews from RAW photos tool for creating JPEG files from the embedded JPEG preview stored in RAW files by some camera models or DNG converters. Added a new Color Class view filter for displaying combinations of photos of different color classes. It can be used for displaying only top rated photos (say first two color classes), or it can also be used to display photos belonging to certain user-defined classes. The IPTC Info dialog now shows a thumbnail of the photo that is being captioned, along with buttons to move to the next or previous photos, and for copying and pasting the entire IPTC info from one photo to another (similar to the IPTC Snapshot contextual menu command). Added an improved IPTC Keywords editor for working with large numbers of keywords. This is accessible from the Edit Keywords menu. Added a User / Client dialog with corresponding variables to store custom values for configuring advanced workflows from a single dialog. In particular, the Job Name field variable {job} is useful for folder and file renaming, and for insertion into an IPTC field. By changing the value of this field in the User / Client dialog, all uses of this variable will use the updated value. The settings in most Photo Mechanic dialogs can now be instantly saved and recalled via a handy Snapshot menu icon (which looks like a lightning bolt). This feature allows sophisticated workflows to be saved and shared for later recall with a simple Snapshot menu selection. Added JPEG sizing estimate for first photo in Save As and FTP As dialogs. Added photo info tooltips in contact sheet to instantly show info about a photo. From the View menu, select the Show Info Tooltips command from the View menu to enable or disable the tooltips info. When enabled, the photo under the mouse cursor in a contact sheet will display a floating window with the photo s Info Text. Added {tab} and {nl} variables. The {tab} evaluates to a tab character, and the {nl} variable evaluates to CR/LF (carriage return and line feed) on Windows, and to CR (carriage return) on Mac. Added {raw+jpeg} (or {r+j}) variable that evaluates to a 1 if a photo is part of a RAW+JPEG pair (this is useful for custom sorting).

The Preview dialog can now zoom to 800%. To quickly zoom into a particular spot of a photo when not in zoom mode, use the Control (Windows) or Command (Mac) key and click on the location to center the zoomed view. Repeat to zoom out (back to full photo mode). There are dozens of other improvements and fixes that are not listed above. If you ve requested a (reasonable) feature enhancement from us in the past, there is a chance that it has been included in version 4.4. Version Fixed problems reading palette-based TIFF files. Save As command now correctly replaces illegal filename characters before saving. In the FTP As command when saving as JPEG, if the source file is also a JPEG and no cropping, rotation, or scaling is applied, it will only be recompressed if the quality setting is less than maximum. When dragging files from one contact sheet window to another contact sheet window on a different volume, the files will now be copied rather than moved. Improved character encoding translations (e.g. the Euro symbol can now be entered and retained correctly). However, there are still differences between the characters that can be entered and retained on a Mac versus a Windows computer due to the character sets used by the different operating systems. (Mac) Removing all favorites now works correctly, and canceling a rename of a top-level favorite no longer crashes. (Mac) Fixed tab order of text fields in Send dialog. (Mac) The FTP Progress window now properly displays filenames with special characters. (Mac) Added a Use Default button for Disk Cache path preference to reset the cache folder to /Users/username/Library/Caches to prevent Spotlight on OS X 10.4 (Tiger) from indexing the cache JPEGs. (Mac) Added code to prevent occasional crashes in the Navigator or Favorites views when ejecting disks or finishing a copy operation. (Mac) Fixed occasional crash when clicking on the edit photos button in the Preview window. (Mac) Printing centered text now works correctly on Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). (Win) Single key shortcuts for rotation were reversed. (Win) Now correctly recognizes numeric keypad input (when NumLk is on) for color class tagging in single selection edit mode and in Preview window. (Win) Added ability to clear out any bad Page Setup data. Hold down the Shift key while opening the Page Setup dialog to reset the Page Setup settings. Disabled use of Photo Mechanic for well known hacked passwords. Version Fixed problems reading TIFF files with alpha channels, and problems reading YCC TIFF files. Fixed problems with.thm files from Canon.CRW and Olympus.ORF RAW files being detached from the RAW file and not being copied, renamed, or deleted.

(Mac) Reduced Xcode/GCC compiler optimization flags for building Photo Mechanic which were causing bad code to be generated in some cases. The only case that was verified was bad creation dates being given to files copied with the update creation times preference checked. (Mac) Added missing error check in Apple s sources for copying files. (Mac) Fixed broken check for military version. (Win) Fixed a crashing problem when a disk icon or folder icon is dragged and dropped into Photo Mechanic from Windows Explorer. (Win) Fixed problems with zoom slider responding to left and right arrow keys, thereby blocking the next and previous photo keyboard shortcuts. Version (Mac) Fixed problem with ingesting or copying locked files under Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger). (Mac) Fixed crashing problem when renaming a root-level item in the Favorites pane. Fixed problem with printing contact sheets containing mixture of aspect ratios causing incorrect layout (e.g. text being drawn over the thumbnails). Fixed another problem viewing some Nikon NEF files that have been created by Nikon Capture Control (i.e. tethered mode). Added check for illegal characters in filenames during Save As operation. Version Fixed a problem with certain operations not working on photos that haven t been scanned yet. For example, if you opened a contact sheet and sorted by Filename, then immediately did a Select All followed by an operation like Rotate, only the first photos that had been scanned and had their thumbnail generated (in the background) would rotate. The same was true with the following operations: Select Tagged, Tag Selected Photos, and Apply IPTC to Selected Photos. Sorting by Capture Time would force all photos to be scanned during the sort of the contact sheet and therefore did not produce this problem. Added support for browsing RAW CR2 files from the Canon Digital Rebel XT. Now recognizes srgb or AdobeRGB for the Nikon D2X when using Color Mode 1 or 3. Fixed a problem viewing Nikon NEF files that have been created by Nikon Capture Control (i.e. tethered mode). Changed the keyboard shortcuts for the Slide Show to mirror the single selection edit mode. Now + (or the = key) will tag a photo, - (minus) will clear the tag for a photo, T will toggle the tag. Also, as with the Preview dialog, the D key will dismiss the photo (deselect it). Added the ability to save IPTC Stationery (as.ipt or.xmp files) with blank fields that are checked. This allows for loading an IPTC Stationery file that clears certain IPTC fields. Fixed problems with evaluating IPTC variables into the IPTC Supplemental Category 1-3 fields. Also fixed a problem with applying Supplemental Category 2 or 3 during ingest if a previous Supplemental Category field wasn t being applied. Fixed a problem with properly loading the IPTC Stationery Pad by dragging an IPT or XMP file on top of the Photo Mechanic application from the Explorer (Win) or Finder (Mac).

Fixed a problem with missing Exif data when browsing Canon RAW CRW files. The Exif information is contained in the associated.thm file, and Photo Mechanic was not attaching this file to the CRW file. This would also cause a problem with renaming and copying not performing the same operation on the.thm file. Fixed the constrained crop function for files that are saved in a portrait orientation. Photo Mechanic wouldn t swap the width & height of the default constrained crop. Also made the constrained crop option stick when drawing new crops for a photo. The constrained attribute can be cleared by holding the Shift (Win) or Option (Mac) key and clicking on the Remove Crop button. Fixed the Apply IPTC Snapshot function to not apply the IPTC date or time when pasting. Added protection from crashing when parsing ICC profile files that are corrupted or truncated. Added protection from crashing when loading bad photos that are selected as part of a Save As. (Mac) Fixed a few problems with OS 10.4 (Tiger): error message on startup if preference set to open an empty contact sheet; the Open contact sheet command was always dimmed; scrolling using scroll wheel was not scrolling whole rows at a time. (Mac) Fixed a problem with black thumbnails appearing when the folder being browsed is renamed in the Navigator. (Mac) The Ingest, Copy, Save As, Rename, and FTP As dialogs now have a shortcut key and tool tip for toggling the Sequence checkbox (Command-Option-S). (Mac) Fixed a problem with browsing from a ISO-9660 formatted CD. (Mac) The F5 Refresh of the Favorites and Navigator panes now works properly, and folders that are opened (by the disclosure triangle) in the Favorites or Navigator panes now automatically refresh. (Mac) Fixed a problem with using the Mac s full keyboard access and assigning the space bar to the Close button. This would crash the Ingest progress windows. (Win) Increased the width of the FTP address in the FTP Connections dialog (it was previously limited to the visible width and wouldn t scroll horizontally). (Win) Added more MAPI error messages that provide instructions on how to configure MAPI on systems that have MAPI errors when sending photos as attachments. A good resource for help is at (Win) Exit of slideshow now sets the focus to the Photo Mechanic application window. Previously a random window on the Desktop would come forward. Version (Mac) Fixed problems launching in Mac OS 10.2 (Jaguar) due to the addition of the automatic crash reporting system added in Photo Mechanic The crash reporting system has been disabled in 10.2, and this will be the last Photo Mechanic version that supports Mac OS (Mac) Fixed a crashing bug when using the Option key to close the Preview dialog. This also includes the Option-E command in the Preview dialog to edit the opposite RAW or JPEG pair (from the preference) when in RAW + JPEG mode.

(Windows) Fixed a problem with Send Photos via . The attachments did not receiving the proper.jpg extension, causing a.dat extension to be added by the client. Version Fixed problems introduced in when viewing grayscale TIFF photos. Also, added support for other TIFF formats: ZIP compressed, JPEG compressed, binary (e.g. facsimile), and 8-bit palette. Also fixed a crashing problem with improperly formatted TIFF files from some scanners (e.g. that don t write the required planar format tag). Added support for the ORF RAW files from the Olympus E-300 and ERF RAW files from the Epson R-D1. Fixed problem with HTML Export where JPEGs that were converted to srgb still retained their original ICC profile. This would cause ICC savvy browsers (like Safari) to show the photos with a color shift due to the retained (not srgb) ICC profile. Fixed problem with FTP to some servers that respond differently to the cwd (change directory) command when no path is specified. This would cause an error such as Failed all attempts to rename file for dropbox transfer. You can now set the color class during the slide show by typing a number 1-8 (or 0 for no color class). Added the E keyboard shortcut to edit the photo in the Preview dialog and in single selection edit mode for the contact sheet. Added new keyboard shortcut, the G key (or / key), in Preview dialog for synchronizing both views when in 2-up mode. The G or / key will set the selection of the non-selected photo (of the pair) to the currently selected photo. This makes it easier to incrementally improve your tagging of keepers when in 2-up mode (thanks to Greg Gorman for the tip and the shortcut key). Added a crash reporting system to allow you to send Camera Bits a report of the reasons for the crash so that we can more readily find the underlying problem and fix it. (Win) Made several changes to the Send Photos via command. You can now send each photo as a separate , and you can choose to send your photos directly without a final compose window. You can now include variables in the Subject and Body sections (if not sending separate s, only the first selected photo will be used for evaluating any variables). Added buttons to access the Windows Address Book for setting the To, Cc, and Bcc fields. Also, the filenames of the sent photos will maintain the same base name as the original photos rather than have a temporary filenames. Improved speed of rescanning directories (e.g. to test for new files). Added a center crosshair mark when cropping photos in the Preview dialog. Fixed problem with Find or Find and Replace not checking the IPTC Edit Status field. Fixed problem with renaming Canon 1D/1DS RAW (.TIF) + JPEG together during Ingest. Added FTP transfer statistics to progress dialog. Fixed a problem not recognizing XMP sidecar files that are newly created by Adobe Camera Raw while Photo Mechanic has the RAW file open in a contact sheet. This caused the XMP sidecar file to not be included when renaming, copying, deleting, etc. (Mac) Improved speed of directory scanning and file status operations on SMB servers.

(Mac) Subfolders of favorites that are dragged to the trash will now move the folder to the trash. Also, subfolders that are dragged to the Trash (from either the Favorites or Navigator) will update both views. (Mac) When Ingest is complete, the Ingest progress dialog comes forward and beeps. (Mac) Contact sheet windows are now automatically closed when the volume they are on is unmounted. (Win) The Variables dialog is now non-modal and resizable. Also, multiple variables can now be pasted without needing to re-open the Variables dialog. (Win) In the Preview dialog, Control-I will open the IPTC Stationery dialog (like the Mac does with Command-I). Fixed a problem with histogram being lost in some cases. Mac Specific Bug Fixes Fixed a problem using a \ or quote character in an subject or body causing an AppleScript error. Also fixed a problem with other special characters such as / and quotes in a filename that were causing AppleScript errors when sending . Fixed text clipping when printing. Fixed a case where quitting Photo Mechanic would restart the caching system just before quitting. Fixed a double delete problem when using the Option-Delete while in zoom mode in the Preview dialog. The photo would get deleted as desired, but then a dialog would appear asking if you wanted to delete the next photo. Fixed a problem when closing some dialogs when the Variables drawer is open. Windows Specific Bug Fixes PMFavorites.state is no longer created on the desktop. Fixed crashing bug when mouse is over a cell that will disappear after rescanning. Fixed a problem where the & character was being interpreted by Windows to underline the character after the & and not draw the & character at all. Version Added support for sending photos to Photoshop Droplets. First select the location of the folder containing your Droplets from the Preferences dialog in the Launching section. Then you can choose Send Photos to Droplet from the Image menu to process the selected photos in Photoshop using the chosen Droplet. Added an Image menu command called Apply Stationery to Selected Photos. This will apply the IPTC Stationery Pad to all the selected photos without asking for an OK. (Mac) Made several changes to the Send Photos via command. You can now send each photo as a separate , and you can choose to not have your client review the (s) so the photos get queued right away (although depending on your client you may still need to send the queued messages). You can now include variables in the Subject and Body sections (if not sending separate s, only the first selected photo will be used for evaluating any variables). Added popup menu lists to show the contacts in your Mac OS X Address Book, and groups will be expanded before the is sent (include the Address Book group name in between < and >

characters). Also, the filenames of the sent photos will maintain the same base name as the original photos rather than have a temporary filenames. Improved load speed for TIFF files and reduced the memory overhead when viewing large files at reduced resolutions (i.e. thumbnails and non-zoomed previews). The Navigator and Favorites panes now refresh automatically for ingest, copy, and saveas operations. You can also now refresh the Navigator and Favorites panes manually by first clicking into the pane (to give the pane focus ), and then pressing the F5 key (or by choosing the Refresh command from the View menu). (Mac) The Navigator and Favorites panes now show the Finder color labels for folders. (Mac) When renaming folders in the Navigator or Favorites panes, clicking outside the edit text field will commit the rename instead of canceling the rename. (Mac) Fixed a problem with not viewing combined RAW + JPEG (despite preference being set) when opening a contact sheet from a empty window (e.g. after startup with open empty contact sheet ). (Mac) On OS 10.2 (Jaguar), fixed a problem with the hand cursor not working while in zoom mode in the preview dialog. Fixed a problem with an existing crop being deleted when clicking outside the crop rectangle while in zoom mode and with the hand cursor active. Fixed a problem with separate ingest processes sharing the common IPTC Stationery Pad. Now each ingest process takes a snapshot of the IPTC Stationery Pad at the start of the ingest and uses that snapshot for all copied files. Therefore, while one ingest process in copying, you can change the IPTC Stationery Pad and begin a subsequent ingest process without affecting the IPTC fields that are being applied for the prior ingest process. Applying the IPTC Stationery Pad via the contextual menu is now done on a separate thread with a progress dialog. (Win) The IPTC dialogs can now be OK d by the Control-Return keyboard shortcut (similar to the Command-Return shortcut on the Mac). Photo Mechanic now checks to make sure that at least one IPTC Stationery Pad field is checked to apply before it will run commands like Copy, Save As, FTP As, and Ingest. The same check is also made in the IPTC Stationery Pad dialog when clicking on the Apply Stationery to Selected button. Fixed a problem reading Canon CR2 RAW files that had been captioned by some other software. Fixed a problem reading DNG files created using Adobe DNG Converter 2.4. Photo Mechanic can now read these files and view the 1024 pixel preview. (Mac) Fixed a problem with the Preferences and Print dialogs not opening on systems that have ICC profiles with internal names that are Unicode characters (the ICC profile menus would not get built causing the dialogs to fail opening). (Win) Fixed a problem with the use of the copyright symbol in the Edit IPTC List dialog. The Delete button would delete the wrong item and strange characters would appear next to the copyright symbol. Fixed a problem with IPTC Captions longer than 2047 characters. The limit is now 4095 characters in Photo Mechanic. The IPTC specification is 2000 characters max. Changed the word Catalog in the HTML exporter to Index to remove the incompatibility with English spelling in the UK and Canada.

Version (Mac) Fixed crash problem when the Ingest Disks command is selected while an empty contact sheet window is open. (Mac) Fixed crash problem experienced by some users when opening a contact sheet. This problem was related to the Navigator. Also changed the Navigator to only draw a disclosure triangle when the folder actually contains folders. (Win) The folder picker dialog now shows the root Desktop folder. Fixed divide by zero problem when using 0 DPI in Save As, FTP As, and Print dialogs. (Win) the Alternate Color Profile path in the Print dialog is now only scanned one level deep to avoid a potential slow startup of the Print dialog. Added a {frame4} or {fnm4} variable for the last four digits of the frame number. Some cameras such as the Canon D30, D60, and 10D internally write a 7 digit frame number that is a combination of a 3 digit folder number and a four digit file number. Version (Mac) Fixed problems with the Preview dialog on some systems running OS 10.2 (Jaguar) causing Photo Mechanic to crash. This was due to problems with the graphics routines on Jaguar. The fix involves using slower scaling functions for drawing previews, avoiding the problems with Camera Bits strongly recommends that users of OS 10.2 (Jaguar) update to OS 10.3 (Panther) due to improved stability and speed in OS When Apple Computer releases OS 10.4 (Tiger), Photo Mechanic will drop support for OS 10.2 (Jaguar), meaning that any new features won t be guaranteed to work on Photo Mechanic 4 will continue to support OS 10.3 (Panther). Fixed problems with Photo Mechanic identifying the ICC profile for Canon 20D JPEGs and CR2 files shot in AdobeRGB. The photos were incorrectly identified as srgb. If you have Photo Mechanic configured to automatically apply the ICC profile during copy or ingest, then you need to use version to re-apply the AdobeRGB profile to the JPEG photos to replace the incorrect srgb profile. (Windows) Fixed problems with invoking certain operations from the Preview window, and other problems with minimization of the Preview window to the Task Bar. Fixed problems with the default ICC profile set to no default profile internally using srgb instead. This would cause photos with undefined profiles to be drawn using srgb color space, rather than not being color managed (at least until the preference dialog was OK d again). Fixed a problem with FTP when TIFF files are saved as JPEG and then transmitted. The transmitted filename was retaining a.tif filename extension despite being a JPEG. Photo Mechanic now makes sure that photos converted to JPEG for FTP transmission have a.jpg filename extension. (Mac) Fixed a problem with Photo Mechanic crashing when non-directory items (such as applications and files) were included in the Finder s sidebar Favorites. Photo Mechanic now ignores all Finder sidebar Favorites that are not actual folders. (Windows) When editing photos with certain image editing programs (Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements), Photo Mechanic would properly send the photos to the application. However, under certain circumstances, the editing application would not bring itself to

the foreground thus making it look like Photo Mechanic had not sent the photos for editing at all. Photo Mechanic now brings the editing application to the foreground. (Windows) Photo Mechanic now converts any IPTC fields displayed in the Image Info pane (or contextual menu) to the correct character set for display. Certain diacritical characters were not being displayed properly. However, the same problem may exist in Windows versions of Photoshop due to the IPTC specification lacking any definition of the character set being used (Photo Mechanic uses MacRoman). Version 4.3 Added RAW + JPEG view mode to combine RAW and JPEG files with the same base name into a single thumbnail. This view can be toggled by Control (Windows) or Command (Mac) J (think of Join). When combined, Photo Mechanic will use the JPEG for displaying thumbnails and previews, and for operations such as save-as, print, , and HTML/text/XML export. Also when combined, operations such as rename, delete, rotate, tag, and caption will be applied to both the RAW and the JPEG files. For copy and FTP, you can choose either RAW + JPEG, only the JPEG, or only the RAW to be copied or sent. Also added a preference to select whether the RAW or the JPEG is edited externally (e.g. with Control (Win) or Command (Mac) E). To edit the opposite file (i.e. JPEG or RAW), use the Shift (Win) or Option (Mac) keyboard modifier. Added zoom function to the preview dialog which can be toggled in the zoom panel (or with the Z keyboard shortcut). The zoom factor can be set to 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, or 200% (keyboard shortcuts for zoom factor are + and - ). When zoomed-in such that that view is larger than the preview window, you can pan/scroll using the hand cursor which is activated by holding down the space bar or Shift (Windows) or Option (Mac) keys. You can also pan/scroll with the Shift (Windows) or Option (Mac) and arrow keys, and pan/scroll faster by also using the Ctrl (Windows) or Shift (Mac) keys. When zoomed-in in 2-up mode, check the Lock scrolling box (or L key to toggle) to pan/scroll both photos together. Added background ingest functionality. Now when you ingest a disk or multiple disks, the ingest process runs in the background so you can continue to use Photo Mechanic while the files are copied from the camera disk(s). If you choose to open contact sheet(s) during ingest, then the destination contact sheet(s) will open at the start of the ingest process and automatically be scanned every 5 seconds to show the freshly copied photos. Multiple ingest processes can be run concurrently. Added ability to rename files during the ingest. RAW + JPEG pairs will be named together with the same base name. Improved speed of preview and slide show. (Mac) Improved speed of disk scans for contact sheets, Favorites and Navigator panes, and ingest. Simplified contact sheet printing by allowing user to directly enter desired number of columns and rows. Also added ability to control thumbnail orientation. Added a Find and Replace command to search and replace IPTC information. Added support for browsing Olympus ORF RAW files from the C-5050, C-7000, C- 8080, E-1, and E-20 cameras. However, only the E-1 and E-20 cameras create a preview; the C-series cameras are limited to the Exif thumbnail.

Added support for browsing Adobe DNG RAW files. However, the preview is limited to the 256 pixel TIFF-EX thumbnail created by the Adobe DNG Converter. Support for CMYK JPEGs is now handled internally without using QuickTime. Added support for CMYK TIFFs in chunky format only. Added retry in FTP progress dialog to resume broken transfers. Also, sent items are saved as soon as they are processed rather than after they have been transmitted. Added more support for viewing CR2 RAW files from the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II and EOS 20D cameras. Added more support for viewing NEF RAW files from the Nikon D2X. (Mac) Added a button in the preferences to configure Image Capture to launch Photo Mechanic when a camera disk is inserted. (Win) Added AutoPlay v2 support so Photo Mechanic can be launched when a camera disk is inserted. First you must enable the AutoPlay for each card reader to use Photo Mechanic for handling Mixed content (since some cameras create audio.wav or video.avi or.mov files). Then Photo Mechanic can be configured to either ingest or browse an inserted camera disk. Do not choose Photo Mechanic to handle AutoPlay for your CD devices. If you are not using Windows XP Service Pack 2, then you may experience some problems with AutoPlay due to Windows SNAFU. Microsoft has an AutoPlay Repair Wizard which can be downloaded from the following link: A171-1B389CFACDAD (Win) Added contextual menu items to Windows Explorer that will let you open a folder into Photo Mechanic. (Win) Added multiple document icons for display in Windows, one for each file type that Photo Mechanic registers. (Win) Added the Favorites pane above the Navigator. (Win) Right click drag of photos from the contact sheet to the Navigator now shows move/copy menu. (Win) Added a fake drag & drop workaround for Photoshop and Photoshop Elements to handle launching multiple photos. (Mac) Navigator now shows Finder s sidebar favorites along with mounted volumes. (Mac) Added ability to create new folders or rename folders in the Navigator and Favorites panes by Control (or right) click. (Mac) Open contact sheets that are renamed by the Favorites or Navigator update themselves properly. Added three character Country Code IPTC field as a combo box. Also added variables {contrycode} or {ccod} to access this field. Added {colorclassval} or {colorval} or {ccvl} to access the color class value as a number from 0-8 (e.g. useful for custom sort). Added enhanced status information at the bottom of the contact sheet that shows the total MB of selected files, the number of RAW and JPEG files (when viewing as combined RAW + JPEG), and number of unknown files not being displayed in the contact sheet. (Win) Added direct renaming of individual photos from the contact sheet window by double-clicking on the file names. Added View by popup menu in the toolbar of the contact sheet. (Win) Added color management toolbar button to toggle color management on/off.

(Win) Filename labels for the thumbnails are now trimmed to fit width of cell rather than just being truncated. Added option to control copying of associated WAV files. Added contextual menu item for thumbnails in the contact sheet for selecting others photos with the same color class. Added user preferences for Preview window background color and selected background color. Added + and - buttons to increase or decrease the size of the Info pane. (Win) Turned on word-wrap for the Info pane. Added M keyboard shortcut in the Preview window to rename a photo. Added mouse wheel support in the Preview window to advance through photos and change the zoom factor when in zoom mode and the Shift (Win) or Option (Mac) key is down. (Win) Added font face, size, and color to HTML export. Added new Home label and Home URL fields in HTML export. Also added checkboxes to preserve EXIF and IPTC information in the generated JPEGs (for HTML export of JPEGs only). Added Shift (Win) or Option (Mac) keyboard shortcut timer to dynamically change the Set {seqn} variable button to Reset {seqn} variable in the following dialogs: Save As, Copy, Rename, FTP As, and Ingest. Added Shift (Win) or Option (Mac) keyboard shortcut timer to dynamically change the Clear button to Options (clear options) in the IPTC Stationery and IPTC Info dialogs. Also, in the IPTC Info dialog, the OK button will change to Eval. (Mac) Added work-around to fix a bug with MacOS X incorrectly replying that a locked file was copied during a drag & drop from Photo Mechanic. This could cause locked files to be deleted if the destination was the same volume as the source contact sheet and the Option key was not held down (to indicate a copy rather than a move). (Mac) Fixed a bug where using the crop tool could keep Photo Mechanic from generating thumbnails. (Mac) When opening a contact sheet, the PM.lock file is now created invisible and is only created on writeable and removeable disks (e.g. camera disks mounted into a card reader). This file won t be created on local or network volumes. The creation of this file on removeable disks is to warn the user against physically unmounting a camera disk before the contact sheet has been closed. (Mac) Fixed a bug where contact sheets would open at strange sizes when no other contact sheets are open and an FTP progress window is open. (Mac) Fixed a bug where the scroll wheel would still think the mouse button was down after a drag & drop operation. (Win) Fixed a drag & drop bug that was preventing multiple photos from being dragged. Also fixed a drag & drop bug where the contact sheet would start scrolling and selecting thumbnails. (Win) Fixed a problem with saving and restoring the splitter bar between the Preview window control panes and the preview (vertical scroll bar now taken into account). (Win) Updated the spelling checker to solve text field selection problems experienced by some users.

Future Updates Photo Mechanic is evolving quickly and new features will be added in subsequent updates approximately every 2-8 weeks. You can check our website at for updates, or enable the update feature in Photo Mechanic. If you find a bug, PLEASE tell us about it! describe the following: o camera make and model o type of image (e.g. JPEG, TIFF, RAW) o computer model o Mac or Windows OS version o type of connection (e.g. FireWire, USB, PCMCIA slot) o operation you were doing (e.g. copying files, applying IPTC Stationery) anything else you can think of helps! This software is based in part on the work of the Independent JPEG Group. QuickTime is from Apple Computer ( TIFF support is Sam Leffler and Silicon Graphics, Inc. Please contact customer support at or support@camerabits.com for bug reports.
