Use or more sheets to make a booklet of that level. Staple in the middle. Ideally use the test every day. Set a timer on a whiteboard to count up to minutes. Anyone finishing the test in under that time writes down the time. Marking if everyone is on the same level, the teacher reads out the answers and children can mark each other s work. However if this is not the case, the teacher can call out one group s answers while other groups can be given their answer sheets to mark between themselves. If a child gets % in a test 2 days running, they move up to the next level. It is sometimes worth checking the marking to ensure that a pupil really does deserve to move up. House/team points can be awarded for improvement within a level. Once a routine has been established, the whole process can be completed in minutes. Make sure that children have past tests folded back under the current test to stop them copying yesterday s correct answers! These tests can be sent home for homework with parents asked to time their children.
2 Once children know their tables, a weekly test will keep them polished! Levels and are the same level of difficulty just different. I have included blank grids in case you wish to add more levels / extensions! You may decide to skip some levels. This is very similar to a scheme operated by the Junior school our children went to. During one Y assembly open to parents, Michael Gove was quoted as stating the children these days didn t know their times tables as well as past generations. To test this, parents were invited to look under their chairs. Two parents found invitations asking them to compete against the best two Y children doing a timed high level times tables test. The result was a complete mismatch, with the Y children finishing their questions in under 2 minutes, whilst the parents had not finished in five minutes!
