2 Installation and activation To use on your cell phone, you must first install the application, set connection and access permissions and use your activation code to activate the product. 2.1 Installing can be installed on a wide range of cell phones. You can find a list of devices supported online at As each device is operated differently, you may need to consult your cell phone's instructions before activating certain functions. This document provides general installation instructions that outline the stages involved. There are also device-specific instructions for three common cell phones, the Nokia N95, the Sony Ericsson K850i and the Nokia 6500 Slide. The following instructions are for installing from a CD-ROM. If you obtained as a download, you should also have received installation instructions directly with this. Copying the installation files from CD-ROM on to a memory card is installed from a memory card. As such, you must first copy the installation files from the CD ROM onto a memory card, with a capacity of at least 1 GB. To do this, simply copy the entire Linguatec folder from the CD-ROM onto the memory card. 5

If your PC features a card reader, you should insert the memory card to copy the installation files onto it. If you do not have a card reader, you should connect your cell phone to the PC by USB cable. Then copy the files on to the memory card inserted in your phone, or directly on to the memory of the cell phone. Installing from a memory card (general instructions) To install, carry out the following steps: 1. Enter the SD card/memory stick with into the device. 2. Start your cell phone's file manager. 3. Within file manager, select the memory card and open the folder named Linguatec. 4. There are two files in the folder. Select the file with the.jad extension (positioned first in the list) and open it to begin installation. 5. Confirm any questions asked during installation ("Yes", "OK" or "Continue"). When asked where to install Shoot & Translate, you can select the cell phone's memory or the memory card. Nokia N95: Open file manager and begin installation 1. In standby mode, open the menu with the menu button. 2. In the Menu screen, select Tools. 3. In the Tools screen, select File man. 4. Select the Linguatec folder and open it. 4. Select the.jad file (positioned first) and open it (center selection button). Installation begins. Confirm any questions asked during installation ("Yes", "OK" or "Continue"). When asked where to install Shoot & Translate, you can select the cell phone's memory or the memory stick. Notes on the Nokia Series 40 can be run directly from the memory card without any installation on Nokia Series 40 devices, e.g. the Nokia 6500 Slide. To do this, select Menu > Apps. Then select the memory card, open the Linguatec directory, and select the S&T... application from the list. 7

Once installation is complete, you should immediately define all connection and access permissions for. 2.2 Setting permissions After installation, you must set the permissions for Shoot & Translate. If you do not do this, the application will ask you to confirm every action you carry out. To ensure the program runs as smoothly as possible, we thus recommend you define all connection and access permissions in advance. The following examples show you how to set the permissions for the Nokia N95, Sony Ericsson K850i and Nokia 6500 Slide. Nokia N95 1. In standby mode, open the menu with the menu button. 2. Enter the license key with your standard cell phone keys and select the Activate command (left selection button). 9

Bluetooth must be turned on to activate. For Series 40 devices such as the Nokia 6500 Slide, Bluetooth must also remain switched on while the program is in use. If you are unsure of how to do this, please consult your cell phone s operating instructions 10

3 Using offers several functions that can be combined in a range of ways: The OCR function (Optical Character Recognition, or text recognition) recognizes text in a photo and transforms it into an editable format. The translation function allows you to translate text sentence by sentence. The voice output function reads text aloud. The dictionary lets you look up specific terms. The OCR, translation and voice output functions are combined in several workflows that can be called up directly from the start menu: : Take a snapshot of some text using Shoot & Translate (or open a previously-taken image) and send the picture to the Linguatec server. The text is then recognized and immediately translated. Once you have received the translation you can listen to voice output of it. Recognize photo: Follows the same workflow as Shoot & Translate, though rather than receiving the translation immediately, you first receive the result of the text recognition process. If necessary, you can add to or edit the text, then have it translated and/or listen to voice output of it. Translate text: This workflow is intended for text that you have typed into your cell phone and wish to translate and listen to. 11

Voice output: Here you enter the text yourself to generate an MP3 file with the corresponding voice output. The translation function is not available here. Dictionary: You can look up terms in the dictionary and listen to their pronunciation. 3.1 Adjusting the settings You can adjust the general settings (display language) as well as those for the translation and voice output functions. From the start screen, open the Options (left selection button) and select Settings. In the following submenu, you can choose between three areas of settings General settings In the general settings, you can change the language of the display. This is carried out as follows: 1. From the start screen, open the Options menu (left selection button) and select the Settings command. A submenu appears, where you should choose General. 2. Select Display language (a white line appears below the option) and then select Toggle (left or center selection button), to change between the different settings available. 3. Once you have selected the options required, select Back (right selection button) to return to the start page. 12

3.1.2 Translation settings In the translation settings you can turn a range of translation options on or off. All the options are turned on as standard (recommended). SmartCorrect SmartCorrect is an automatic spelling correction feature. When the translation system discovers misspelled words and word groups, it attempts to replace them with a plausible alternative and uses this for the translation. The sentence "I hope the trian [correct: train] arrives on time" would be translated correctly with SmartCorrect, despite the misspelling. Proper names are frequently not included in the dictionary but it is important that they are not modified by SmartCorrect. Therefore, you should always activate SmartCorrect together with the option Proper name recognition (see below) to ensure that names remain unchanged and are not automatically corrected. Proper name recognition Personal names, geographical names and names of companies and institutions often cause problems during machine translation if they have a different meaning in the dictionary (e. g. surnames such as Bäcker, Baker, Boulanger etc., which are all job titles as well). If this option is activated, proper names are automatically recognized via context analysis, ensuring any translation errors are avoided. 13

Subject area recognition Some words have different meanings depending on the context, and are thus translated differently (e.g. the English term file for "Akte" and "Datei"). If this option is activated, the translation system identifies the subject area using the context of the term and tailors the translation accordingly. To modify the standard settings, carry out the following steps: 1. From the start screen, open the Options menu (left selection button) and select the Settings command. A submenu appears, where you should choose Translate. 2. Select the option required (a white line will appear beneath it) and click the Toggle command (left or middle selection button), to turn the option on or off. 3. Once you have selected the options required, select Back (right selection button) to return to the start page Voice output settings Different options can be chosen for the voice output settings. This is carried out as follows: 1. From the start screen, open the Options menu (left selection button) and select the Settings command. A submenu appears, where you should choose Voice output. 2. Select the option required (a white line appears beneath it) and carry out the required modification (see below). 3. Once you have made the changes required, select Back (right selection button) to return to the start page. 14

You can carry out changes to the current settings as follows: If one of your languages is English, there is an option to switch the voice output settings between American (US) and British (UK) pronunciation. Use the Toggle command (left or central selection button), to switch between the two options. For German and British English, a male voice is also available alongside the standard female voice. Select Toggle (left or center selection button), to switch between the options. For all other languages, the output voice is always feminine irrespective of the settings selected here. When adjusting the sliders for pitch and speech speed, use the left or right navigation buttons to decrease/ increase the value. 3.2 (take a photograph and translate) The function combines the central features of the program into a single workflow, so that you need simply photograph a text document and carry out a few steps to receive a translation of the text or even have it read aloud. Carry out the following steps to have a text translated and read aloud: Start the function and select a language direction To start the function, go to the start screen and select Shoot & Translate. 15

The Language direction screen appears. Use the up or down navigation buttons to select the language direction and confirm your choice with the Select command (left or center selection button). Take or load a photo If you wish to take a photo, select the Snapshot command and confirm with Select (left or center selection button). This starts the camera. To release the shutter, press the center selection button or select the Shutter command from the Options menu (left selection button). Please remember to follow the Tips on taking photographs. If you wish to open a previously stored photo, select the Open photo command and confirm via Select (left or center selection button). Then use the file browser to open the required image file. The snapshot function ensures you can take photos quickly and easily, without having to adjust any camera settings manually. Rather than being saved, snapshots are deleted after text recognition so as not to take up any unnecessary space on your cell phone. The snapshot function is less suitable for images that contain lots of text and/or where the type is rather small. In such cases, you should first use the camera function of your cell phone (e.g. in macro/close-up mode) outside of, and save the photo. You can then open the image with the Open photo command in. Crop the photo For better results, you should crop the image so that only the text to be recognized is shown. Use the left or right navigation buttons to select the cropping symbol at the bottom left-hand 16

edge of the picture (a blue border will appear). Confirm your choice with the center selection button. The photo will be surrounded by a white border. Carry out the following steps: 1. Once you have selected the position required, confirm your decision with the center selection button. 3. Next, the bottom right corner can be adjusted. Use the left and up navigation buttons to do this. 4. Once you have selected the position required, confirm your decision with the center selection button. When cropping, the sections of the picture concerned are temporarily faded out, though not deleted. If you are unhappy with the results of the cropping, you can easily repeat the process by reselecting the cropping symbol. Send the photo to the Linguatec server for text recognition and translation To transfer the photo, select the send symbol at the bottom right of the picture. This is done using the left or right navigation buttons (a blue border then appears), and then by confirming your choice with the center selection button. An OCR program (Optical Character Recognition) on the Linguatec server converts the picture into text before it is translated. After a few moments, the translation appears on your cell phone's display. 17

Modify translated text To correct existing or add additional text, you must first ensure that the text field has been selected (denoted by a white border). If this is not the case and a symbol at the bottom of the image is selected, use the up navigation button to select the text field. Within the text field you can move the cursor using the navigation buttons. To edit the text use your cell phone's standard keys for inputting letters and punctuation marks, and for deleting characters. To change back from the text field to the symbols at the bottom of the image, press the down navigation button until the selection border no longer surrounds the text field. Receive voice output of translation For voice output of the text, select the speaker symbol at the bottom of the image. This is done using the navigation buttons (a blue border then appears), and then by confirming your choice with the center selection button. The text is transferred to the Linguatec server, where it is converted into a sound file and sent back almost immediately. Once the sound file has been downloaded, it is played back. You can then choose to listen to the sound file as many times as you wish, without having to download it each time. Playback is controlled via the symbols at the bottom of the image (selected using the left or right navigation buttons, and confirmed with the center selection button). 19

Use the left or right navigation buttons to select the cropping symbol at the bottom left-hand edge of the picture (a blue border will appear). Confirm your choice with the center selection button. The photo will be surrounded by a white border. Carry out the following steps: 1. First, the top left corner can be adjusted. Use the down and right navigation buttons to do this. 2. Once you have selected the position required, confirm your decision with the center selection button. 3. Next, the bottom right corner can be adjusted. Use the left and up navigation buttons to do this. 4. Once you have selected the position required, confirm your decision with the center selection button. 20

When cropping, the sections of the picture concerned are temporarily faded out, though not deleted. If you are unhappy with the results of the cropping, you can easily repeat the process by reselecting the cropping symbol. Send the photo to the Linguatec server for text recognition To transfer the photo, select the send symbol at the bottom right of the picture. This is done using the left or right navigation buttons (a blue border then appears), and then by confirming your choice with the center selection button. An OCR program (Optical Character Recognition) on the Linguatec server converts the picture into text and sends it back to you. After a few moments, the text appears on your cell phone's display. Edit the text (optional) To correct existing or add additional text, you must first ensure that the text field has been selected (denoted by a white border). If this is not the case and a symbol at the bottom of the image is selected, use the up navigation button to select the text field. Use the Back command to return to the previous entry. 27

4 Tips on taking photographs Most people use their cell phone's camera to take pictures of people, objects and landscapes, but not to produce OCR documents. As such, even the most experienced photographer can benefit from the following tips and advice. General advice The following points apply regardless of whether you use your cell phone's integrated camera function to take the picture, or whether you do it directly from with a snapshot ( function): Hold the camera or lens as parallel as possible to the document's surface in order to avoid distortion. Position the camera so that the text lines run parallel to the top/bottom edge of the picture. Ensure that no text at the sides is cut off. If possible, photograph the entire document, or a clearly marked section. Note that any ornamental type or background graphic can lead to a lower recognition rate. 28

Documents that are distorted or twisted, or that have text missing, are not suitable for text recognition (OCR). Advice on the cell phone's camera function You will only have access to any special functions your cell phone offers, if you take the picture outside of. You can then open the picture in to begin text recognition and then translate the document and/or have it read aloud. It is recommended that you use the cell phone's photography function particularly when the document contains a lot of text and/or small type. Please note the following: When photographing documents, always use the close-up/ macro mode. Avoid any reflections and if possible, do not use the flash. Ideally you should use natural light. Should artificial light be required, it is best if you use two light sources, so as to avoid shadows. If the cell phone camera features an optical zoom, use this to ensure the document fills the image as much as possible. (Digital zooms should be avoided however). 29
