About Phone Recovery Stick Welcome to Paraben s Voice Logger! This program allows you to turn any Windows computer into a covert, voice activated recording device. Voice Logger uses your computer s microphone to record conversations. You can manually record everything from Skype conversations, dictate notes to yourself, or turn on stealth mode to covertly record conversations on and around your computer. You can even schedule recording times. What s New! Paraben s Voice Logger is a new voice recorder app for Windows. Check for updates frequently. 3

Getting Started System Requirements The following requirements must be met to use Voice Logger: Voice Logger requires Windows Vista or newer 32 or 64-bit operating system. Sound card and microphone (internet connection required for some features). Please Note: DO NOT DELETE FILES FROM VOICE LOGGER! Your Voice Logger USB drive contains the Voice Logger software, license key, help files, and a configuration file necessary for some features of Voice Logger. Do not delete any of the files form your Voice Logger drive. How to Use Voice Logger The instructions below are the basic instructions to install and start using the Voice Logger. These instructions will cover the most important settings to start recording in stealth or normal mode and will not cover all settings. For a comprehensive guide on all settings, please see the help file. Installation 1. Plug the Voice Logger into the USB port of your computer. 2. Double-click the setup-voice-logger.exe file. 3. Follow the step-by-step instructions to install the Voice Logger software onto the target computer. Please note that you can hide where the program is installed by selecting or creating a new installation folder and start menu folder. 4. When installation is finished, open the Voice Logger app. Registering Voice Logger Once you have installed Voice Logger, you must register it. Your Voice Logger USB drive contains your license key. To register your software, go to Help/View License: On the License handling screen, you will see the option to drag and drop your license key to register your software. Your license key file is on your Voice Logger USB drive and should have 4

a name like Voice Logger-LicenseXXXXX.xml. To register, simply drag and drop your license key into the license box as shown below. Pro Tip: Voice Logger can only be installed on one computer at a time. To move your license to a new computer, you must uninstall it from the computer it s registered to and then install and register it on the new computer. Initial Setup Please refer to the Getting Started Guide on your Voice Logger USB drive for instructions on how to set up your Voice Logger. These instructions will show you how to set it up for covert stealth recordings, dictation recordings, standard recordings and more. Pro Tip: Voice Logger has an option to enter into Stealth Mode. This will hide the interface of Voice Logger so users do not know they are being recorded. There are two options to take Voice Logger out of Stealth Mode: 1. Use the same Hot Key combination you used to put Voice Logger into Stealth mode. 2. Plug the Voice Logger USB drive into the computer. As long as no files have been deleted from your Voice Logger USB drive, Voice Logger will come out of Stealth Mode and you will be able to see the interface. Voice Logger also automatically copies over any recordings from the target computer to the Voice Logger USB drive for an easy way to gather recordings. If neither of these options work, you can re-install the Voice Logger software. 5

Recording Modes Voice Logger has several different recording modes. You can only select one mode at a time and you must click the record button to enable recording in the selected mode. Sound Activated Mode In this mode, Voice Logger will start recording when the sound level is above the trigger threshold and sensitivity level. The recording led will flash to indicate that a recording is in progress. Recording will automatically stop when noise levels fall below the trigger threshold. Normal Mode In normal mode, Voice Logger will record continuously until the Stop button is pressed. The recording led will flash to indicate that the recording is in progress. Dictation Mode & Settings In dictation mode, Voice Logger will start recording when the sound level is above the trigger threshold and collect all recordings into a single file. You can select to have a tone sound in between recordings to help track when each individual recording stops and the next recording begins. Press Settings to enable tones between recordings. (See picture above.) Pro Tip: The dictation mode starts each individual recording based on the trigger and it will collect all individual dictations into one file. To stop a set of dictations and start a new set in a new file, you must press the stop button and then press the record button to start the new file. Test In this mode, Voice Logger is in a no recording mode, where no recordings are made. This test mode will allow you to adjust the trigger level without actually recording any sound. Trigger levels can be adjusted to an appropriate level with the help of the yellow trigger indicator at the top of the main window. 8

Trigger Settings The trigger slider sets the threshold for the trigger sound level. The selected level is shown in the level meter as a blue line. If the sound level reaches the threshold for a period of time matching the sensitivity level, the recording will start and keep on recording as long as the sound is above the threshold level. Trigger Level Indicator Trigger Slider Sensitivity Level Slider (Length of time needed above the trigger level to initiate the recording) 9

Options Options allow you to configure settings for most of the features of Voice Logger. To change the options, go to File/Options. 10

General The general options screen has two tabs. Settings and Files. General: Settings Tab In Under the settings tab, select the recording device (microphone). If there is more than one option available, select one and test a recording. Move between available devices until you can successfully record sounds. Startup Settings Choose your startup settings. Start when windows starts checking this box will automatically launch the program every time Windows starts. Start recording in selected mode checking this box will automatically start recording in the Recording mode that is selected. Start Minimized checking this box will cause the program to be started Minimized (note that the program may still be visible in the Task Bar). Start in stealth mode checking this box will start the program in stealth mode. This setting is recommended for covert recording. Default storage directory This is the folder where recordings will be stored. Change this location by clicking the Set button to hide where the recordings are stored. 11

Smart storage Checking this box will cause the recordings to be organized in folders by date recorded. General: Files Tab Under the Files tab, you can change the settings of the recording files. File settings Choose your file settings. Default prefix when saving files entering a file prefix here will add the entered text to the beginning of each recording file. Split file when size is greater than checking this box will split large recording files to the size entered. This is recommended if you are using the feature as most services limit the size of attachments. Split file when length is greater than checking this box will split long recordings to the length entered in the box. 12

Audio The Audio options allow you to change audio options such as the format, bitrate, and pre/post trigger recording times. See the chart at the end of this section on various audio settings and their applications. Recording format This drop down menu allows you to change the recording format from the default MP3 format to other formats. MP3 Encoding Settings This setting allows you to change the bitrate of the MP3 recording. The default 128 Kbps results in a sound quality equivalent to what you would hear on the radio. The higher the bitrate, the higher the sound quality and the larger the file size of recordings. Sampler Settings The sampler settings allow you to change the sample rate in Hz as well as changing from Mono to Stereo. 13

Skip recordings shorter than This setting allows you to skip recordings based on the length you set. This can be useful if you find you have too many short recordings due to noises that may trigger a recording. Recording time window Voice Logger will record sound up to 10 seconds before the trigger starts a recording event and up to 180 seconds after sound levels fall below the trigger level. To change these times, use the drop down menu. Audio Settings Guidelines Chart Below are some rough guidelines for the encoder/sampler settings: Application Bitrate Sample Rate Stereo/Mono Typical File Size (1 minute) Voice Recordings 8-16 Kb/s 1600 Hz Mono KB Normal Recordings 64 Kb/s Hz Mono 480 KB High Quality Recordings 128 Kb/s Hz Stereo 960 KB 14

Hotkeys Voice Logger allows you to hide the interface for covert recordings by placing the app in stealth mode. Stealth mode will hide the interface and remove the icon in the task bar.
