2 Backup and Restore Many people use their ipads to accumulate and store important information: phone numbers, addresses, notes, work projects and more. Considering this, it is possible to back up the information on your ipad. When you back up your ipad, t the settings and information on your ipad is saved to a secondary location so that if anything were to happen to the ipad (whether it breaks or is lost) it is still possible to recover the information and settings that were on the device. There are two possible ways to back up the information on your ipad: using your computer and the itunes program, or using icloud. Backup Using itunes If you have a home computer, it is possible to back up your ipad to your computer using the program itunes. You must use the itunes program to back up your ipad to your computer. If you don t have already have itunes on your computer, you can download it for free from Once itunes is installed on your computer, plug your ipad into the computer and select your device from the menu along the left side of the screen. Once on this screen the Backup Menu options will be at the bottom of the page. Select This computer and then click on Back Up Now. If it is ever necessary to restore the backed up information from your computer to your ipad, simply plug the device (or a new ipad) into the computer, open itunes and select Restore Backup. April

3 Backup Using icloud icloud is an optional feature of using an ipad. You do not need to set up icloud to use your device however it does have its benefits. icloud is a remote storage and backup application. It stores the information on your device (contacts, mail, notes, etc.) in a cloud on the Internet. The means that you can access that information from any device with your icloud login information. icloud also automatically remotely backs up your ipad on a daily basis, as long as you are connected to a wireless network. This means that you can back up and restore your ipad all without a computer, using the icloud login. April

4 In order to set up, activate and review your icloud account tap on the Settings icon and then scroll down to icloud. April

5 Updating Device Software Apple is constantly working to improve and adapt the operating system of its device, including the ipad. The operating system is the brain of the device and determines how well the device works to perform tasks and run apps. Apple refers to its operating systems as ios and the updates are ordered numerically (i.e. the current ios system is ios 7.1.1). Periodically, Apple will release system updates for its operating system. There will be a notification on the Settings app when a software update is available for your device. To update the operating system, tap on the Settings app and then tap on General, then select Software Update. Follow the instructions and prompts on the screen in order to complete the system update. The device must be connected to a wireless network and have more that 50% battery life (or be plugged in) to complete the update as it can take a few moments and use lots of battery power. April

6 Internet Browser The default Internet browser on Apple device is Safari. There are several features of this browser to help make it easy and fast to surf your favourite websites. Bookmarks It is possible to Bookmark (or Favourite) a website, which adds the website link to a list which is easily and quickly accessible. To bookmark a website, first go to the website that you wish to bookmark in Safari. Do this either by entering the website address in the address bar, or searching for the website using a search engine (Google). Once you are viewing the website you wish to bookmark, tap on the Action Button. Then tap on Add Bookmark. A small window will appear that allows you to choose which folder to save to within Bookmarks. Press the blue word Save to finish adding the bookmark. To view saved Bookmarks, tap on the book icon to the right of the address bar. April

7 Cut/Copy and Paste It is possible to cut or copy and paste on the ipad. In order to cut/copy and paste, the first step is to select, or highlight, what you would like to cut or copy. To highlight text, press and hold on the first word of the section of text you wish to copy. A small magnified circle will appear under your finger. Once this appears, lift your finger from the screen. The word that you pressed will now be highlighted, with a small blue dot at both the beginning and end of the word. To expand the highlighted section of text, press and hold on the small blue dot and drag over the rest of the text you wish to highlight. Once you have highlighted all of the text you want to copy, lift your finger from the screen. The word copy will appear as an option. Tap Copy to copy the selected text. To paste the text, tap once where you wish to insert the text. Once the flashing line appears, tap again in the same place to bring up the paste option. Tap on Paste to insert the copied text. April

8 One of the default apps on the ipad is . This is an application that synchronizes with your account and provides a quick, easy way to send and receive . To use the app to manage your mail, you must first set up the app to synchronize with your existing account. The first time that you tap on the app, it will prompt you to set up the app for use with your account. You can also access this set up procedure through the Settings app. To set up the app, first tap on the type of account you have (i.e. Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.). Then enter your account information as prompted. Tap Next in the top right corner to complete the set up process. April

9 imessage Apple has its own instant messaging app called imessage. imessage allows instant messages between Apple devices. For iphone users, this is the application that allows sending and receiving text messages between cell phone numbers. However, the Messages app also works on ipads and other Apple devices that are not connected to a cellular network (including Mac laptop and desktop computers). imessage works by sending messages between 2 Apple IDs. In order to send another ipad user a message, you must know the Apple ID of the device you want to send the message to. You are only able to send messages from your ipad when you are connected to the Internet. April

10 Maps Maps is one of the default apps on the ipad. You can enter an address to map its location, or use Maps to find directions from one place to another. April

11 Editing Photos It is possible to edit photos directly on the ipad. You can add colour effects (i.e. make a picture black and white), as well as crop and reduce red-eye. To edit a photo, first open the Photos app to access the pictures saved on your device. Select the photo you wish to edit by tapping on it once. Tap the word Edit in the top left corner to enter editing mode. The editing options will appear along the bottom of the screen and to apply one of the editing functions, simply tap it. Once you have edited the photo, you can choose to either Apply the changes or Revert to Original by tapping one of those options at the top of the screen. April

12 Multitasking To access the Multitasking Menu, double click the Home Button. The multitasking menu shows you apps that are open and running the background of your device. This menu is designed to be an easy way of switching between apps that you use frequently. To see the different open apps, swipe to the left or right. Swipe up on an app to completely shut it down. This is useful is an app has frozen or hasn t loaded properly (this is rare but does happen once in a while). Generally speaking, there is no need to regularly close apps completely from the multitasking menu. Apps are designed to use an extremely small amount of battery power when running in the background, so it is not necessary to always completely shut them down. April

13 Notification Menu The Notifications Menu can be accessed by swiping down from the very top of the screen. This opens a menu that always displays the current date and weather. This menu will also display any upcoming events that are entered in the Calendar app, as well as any missed notifications (i.e. from Messages or from games). To close the Notifications menu, swipe up from the very bottom of the screen. Control Center The Control Center can be accessed by swiping up from the very bottom of the screen. It offers quick access to frequently used settings and controls, including the flashlight and camera. To close the Control Center, swipe down. April

14 Search You ipad has a Search function that allows you to enter keywords to search the contents of the device (Messages, , Notes, etc.). To access the Search function, swipe down from the middle of the screen. April
