2 MALCOM STA-2 Solder Impurity Tester Preparation Assembling the STA-2 and installing and configuring the STAP-2 and STAP-Pb2 software 1. Setup the STA-2 Mount the cooling fan to the side of the base unit and place the heater on top of the base unit. 2. Attach the wiring Connect the heater and thermocouple sensors. Match the labels on the connectors to the labels on the base unit. Connect your computer to the STA-2 unit with the USB cable. 3. Configure the STAP-2 analysis program Install the STA-2 software and open the STAP-2 application. Open the Options > Settings menu. Go to Option > Settings 2

3 On the COM Port tab, make sure that the USB checkbox is checked. (Since you are using a USB connection, you can ignore the other COM Port settings on this tab.) COM Port settings tab Check Setup USB Go to the Kind of Solder tab to choose the kind of solder you wish to test. Kind of Solder tab Select Sn-Cu or Sn-Ag-Cu depending on the solder you wish to test. 3

4 Go to the Set Condition tab to configure the operation of the STA-2. Set Condition tab Enter 270 Enter 200 Enter 280 Slope default is 10 C /min. Make sure the STA-2 is on. Click the Sending Configuration button, then click the Receiving Configuration button. If you receive a Connection Error dialog: 1. Check that the USB cable is properly connected to the STA-2 and your computer. 2. Make sure that the STA-2 software driver (MUsb32.sys) is properly installed. You will find the driver on the STA-2 software CD. Click OK. 4

5 4. Verify Auto Measurement Mode Make sure that Auto Measurement Mode is turned on. On the Menu bar, go to Measurement > Auto Measurement Mode. Make sure a check mark appears next to Auto Measurement Mode. Make sure Auto Measurement Mode is checked. 5. Register the Pb Lower Limit Copy the two data files on the CD-ROM included with your STA-2 into the Data folder: Program Files > Malcom > STAP-2 > Data. NOTE: Do not put the files in the Std_Data folder. This folder is only used by the application. Select Pb in the Mixing Standard dropdown box. Select Pb in the Mixing Standard dropdown box. Browse to the data in the Data folder. 5

6 Click the Open File button and browse to the files you just copied to the Data folder. Select the LOW file and click Open. Select the Lower Limit data file Click the Register Lower Limit button. Register Lower Limit button Enter the Pb Content Rate for the solder. This data can be found in two places... Pb Content dialog 6

Register the Pb Upper Limit Follow the above procedure to register the Pb Upper Limit, selecting the UP file this time and clicking the Register Upper Limit button. 7. Register the Cu Content If you have set Kind of Solder to Sn-Cu, change the element on the Mixing Standard dropdown box to Cu, then click the Open File button. Change to Cu Once again, browse to the LOW standard file in the Data folder. Select and Open the file. Then in the STAP-2 window, click the Register Standard button. 7

8 The Register Standard Data dialog will appear. Again, you will find the Cu Content Rate on the CD label or in the Remarks section of the Measurement Information window. Enter Cu content rate You have successfully registered the upper and lower limits for Pb and Cu. Measure the Pb and Cu Content of a Solder Sample Now it s time to test your own sample solder. Open the STAP-2 application and click the Start button. NOTE: Turn off your computer s screen saver or energy saving features before starting. START Set the solder cup into its holder and add enough of your sample solder to fill the cup approximately 80% full. Use the special tweezers to lift the solder cup... 8

9 ... and place it into the socket of the heating unit. NOTE: Wait until your solder sample completely melts before closing the heating unit cover. CAUTION: Molten solder can cause serious burns. 1. Remove the dross over the molten solder surface with the stainless steel rod. 2. Close the heating unit cover. 3. Turn on the cooling fan switch during the test. (It will only come on during the cooling phases of the test.) 4. The test will take approximate 45 minutes (A real-time graph will be drawn on your computer screen.) Note: The heat sensor is very sensitive; do not move the STA-2 unit during the test. 5. The test result will be displayed in the Results window at the bottom of the screen. 6. Enter your test information into the Measurement Information window. 7. Save the test data to the Data folder. 8. Open the top of the heating unit and carefully remove the sample solder from the cup. 9. Clean the temperature sensor, being careful not to bend it You are ready for your next test.
