Computer-Aided Design Introduction to CAD Introduction to AutoSketch Open the AutoSketch application In the Start Up dialog box, click on the Wizard tab. Then select Start Drawing Immediately. Click on OK. Take a minute or two to move the cursor along the All-In-One toolbar and watch as the tool is identified by name. 3. Look at the bottom left side of the AutoSketch window as you move the cursor over the buttons. A description of the tool or button appears in the Status Bar message area. To access the AutoSketch tools, you can use the pull-down menus from the Menu Bar, the buttons on the toolbars, or open pop-up toolsets. Clicking on a button on a toolbar is the same as selecting the corresponding menu item. If a button that you want is not visible on the toolbar, click and hold for a moment and a toolset appears. Drag the cursor to the button you want and release. The tools and menus that you will use to draw will be explained in detail throughout the course. Now that you have explored the All-In-One toolbar, let s preview the drawing power of AutoSketch by looking at a sample drawing. 4. From the File menu, choose Open. AutoSketch displays files in the Open Drawing File dialog box. Make sure the Drawings folder appears in the Look In: pull-down menu. (C:\Program Files\ AutoDesk\AutoSketch10\Drawings) Double-click on the file labeled Birdhouse. A drawing of a birdhouse appears. Move your cursor anywhere in the drawing area. You ll notice that the dial box, located on the Status Bar, shows the exact location of the cursor at all times. The coordinates on the left (Absolute) display the location of the cursor in relation to the origin. The coordinates on the right (Relative) display the location of the cursor in relation to the last point entered. You can view a drawing in different ways by using the Zoom tools To zoom in, click on the View menu then click on Zoom In. (You can also click on the Zoom In button on the All-In-One toolbar.) Now click and hold the mouse, and drag the cursor from one corner of the area you want to enlarge, to the opposite corner. Release the mouse button. To zoom out, click on the View menu and then click on Zoom Out. (You can also click on the Zoom Out button on the All-In-One toolbar.) Click and hold the mouse and drag the cursor to indicate the area the current view should occupy after the zoom. Then release the mouse button. To return to a previous view, click on the View menu and select Last, or you can click on the Last View button on the All-In-One toolbar. Take turns with your partner viewing different parts of the birdhouse in greater detail. NOTE: If at any time you cannot return to the original view of the birdhouse, click on the File menu and select Close. Select No to the Save Changes to Birdhouse? question. Now click on the File menu again and select Open. From the Open Drawing File dialog box, double-click on the filename Birdhouse. Tech-Design by Lab-Volt 3

From the Open Drawing File dialog box, double-click on a drawing. When you are finished, select File and then Close. (Remember to select No to the save changes question.) 15. When you are done exploring, exit AutoSketch by selecting File and then Exit. 4 Tech-Design by Lab-Volt

Computer-Aided Design AutoSketch Learning AutoSketch You will now try some basic drawing techniques. Alternate with your partner in practicing the use of AutoSketch. 1. The AutoSketch window appears with the Start Up dialog box displayed. 2. Click on the Wizard tab and then select Start Drawing Immediately. Click on OK. Remember to use the cursor to help you find the buttons and tools Move your cursor around in the drawing area. Now stop the cursor somewhere on the screen. Look at the numbers in the dial display on the Status bar. These numbers are the coordinates of the cursor. Move the cursor around the screen and notice how the coordinates change. The dial shows the exact location of the cursor at all times. To view the coordinate type, move your cursor over the dial display area and look at the prompt box that appears next to the cursor to see what type of coordinates you are using. It should read Absolute (Grid xy). Coordinates are numbers that specify the location of one point in relation to another. This relation is classified as either absolute or relative. AutoSketch expresses locations in three ways: xy (Cartesian), polar, and isometric coordinates. To help you draw objects, AutoSketch provides a grid. It is the on-screen equivalent of graph paper, and like graph paper, it helps you align objects visually. Another useful feature to help you draw is the Gridpoint Snap tool. It restricts cursor movement to specific intervals. The cursor snaps to each gridpoint. 6. Turn the Gridpoint snap feature on by clicking on the Gridpoint button on the All-In-One toolbar. You ll know gridpoint snap is turned on when a red circle attaches to your cursor when you move your cursor to the drawing area when you draw an object. Remember, place your cursor over a button to display its name, then select the one you want. Now you are ready to learn some of the tools that AutoSketch provides for drawing objects. An object is any line, circle, box, or other shape you draw. Take turns with your partner drawing the different objects. 7. Note that some of the buttons in the All-In-One toolbar have a small arrowhead on the bottom right corner of the button. That arrow lets you know there are more options provided through that button. Click and hold the button to view a pop-out menu. As you move your cursor over the buttons in the pop-out menu, the name of each option appears. Clicking again on the option you want selects it Click on the Line Single button on the All-In-One toolbar. You may have to first click and hold on the Line Multiple button to display the Line Single button. Move the cursor into the drawing area. Pick the starting point of your line and click. Then pick the ending point and click. Easy right? Now try the Line Multiple button to draw connecting lines in the drawing area. When you are finished drawing the lines, click on the right mouse button (right-click). The box that appears around the line means that the last line you drew is selected. The Edit bar displays geometric properties for that line. All-In-One Toolbar with Pop-Out Menu Tech-Design by Lab-Volt 5

AutoSketch Computer-Aided Design Since the last line you drew is selected (box around it), you can change one of the settings on the Edit bar by selecting the text in it, entering a new value, and pressing Enter. Try it. Change the Line length by first highlighting the value that appears in the box now and entering a new value. Then press Enter. You can experiment with different settings on the Edit bar for that line if you want. Now try drawing double connecting lines using the Line Double tool. End the lines by right-clicking the mouse. Practice drawing some lines. To make more space, you can erase some of your objects by first selecting the objects you want erased. To do this, click on the Select Direct button on the All-In- One toolbar. Then drag the cursor around the objects you want deleted. You ll know the objects are selected when a box surrounds them. Now click on the delete key on the keyboard. You will notice that part of the grid also is deleted. Click on the Redraw button on the All-In-One toolbar to redraw the grid. The next tool you will try is the 3 Point Arc. Click on that button now. You will draw an arc by picking three points. Pick a point to begin the arc and click on the mouse button. Move the mouse and pick your second point on your arc. Click the mouse button. Now when you move your mouse, you are creating the arc. Select an endpoint by clicking the mouse. Take turns with your partner and practice drawing some of the other arcs available. You may have to right-click to complete some of the other arcs. Remember that to make more room in the drawing area; you click on the Select Direct button on the All-In-One toolbar to select the items to be deleted. Then press the Delete key on the keyboard. Click on the Center, Side Circle button on the All-In-One toolbar. To draw a circle, first pick your center and click the mouse. Then move the mouse to draw the size of your circle. Click the mouse again to complete the circle. To draw a circle by first selecting the side of the circle, select the Side, Side Circle button. Try it. Next try drawing a circle by selecting three points, which is similar to drawing the 3 point arc. Click on the 3 Point Circle button. Experiment with the other types of circles. Now try drawing a Single Polyline. Click on the Single Polyline button on the All-In-One toolbar. Pick a point to begin the polyline and click on the mouse. Move the mouse and pick some more points for your polyline, clicking the mouse button each time. To end your polyline, right-click the mouse Now let s try using the Sketch Polyline tool. Click on that button now. To use this tool, hold down the left mouse button and move the cursor around in the drawing area. A polyline follows the path of the mouse. When you are finished, release the mouse button. The next tool you want to try is the Rectangle tool. Try this one on your own. (Here s a hint: click the mouse first to pick your first corner, then move the mouse and pick the opposite corner of the box). Try drawing the different types of rectangles. Keep some of these objects on the screen so you can add color to them. To add an outline color to an object, you must first select the object. Do you remember how to do that? Click on the Select Direct button and click on the object you want selected. (A box will appear around the object when it is selected). Once the object is selected, you can change the outline color of your object by clicking on the down arrow that appears next to the Color button on the Property bar. Select a color from the pull-down color menu that appears. To add a color fill, first click on the Solid Color tab of the Content Librarian (located on the right side of the screen) then click, hold and drag the color you select to the inside of your object. Release 6 Tech-Design by Lab-Volt

Computer-Aided Design AutoSketch your mouse and your object is filled. Click anywhere on the screen to de-select your object so you can see the colors you added. Practice drawing the objects that you have learned so far. Take turns with your partner. When you are finished, select File from the Menu Bar, then Exit. Select No to the question, Save Changes? 21 Computer-Aided Design Create a Technical Drawing Drawing an MP3 Player In the Start Up dialog box, click on the Wizard tab. Then select Start Drawing Immediately, click on OK. Turn on Gridpoint Snap. The Gridpoint Snap button is on the All-In-One toolbar. The first thing you need to draw is a box, so click on the Rectangle tool on the All-In-One toolbar. Move the cursor to coordinates (2.00", 1.00") and click. Next move to coordinates (6.00", 10.00") and click. (Remember to look at the left dial display). Now draw another rectangle within that first rectangle. Make sure the rectangle is still selected. Move the cursor to coordinates (2.50", 5.00") and click. Move to coordinates (5.50", 9.50") and click. NOTE: Any time you make a mistake, click on Edit and then on Undo. After the object is removed, you might notice that the area of the grid where the object was is also removed. You need to click on the Redraw button, which is located on the All-In-One toolbar Before you go any further, you should save your work. Select File and Save. The Save Drawing File dialog box appears. Make sure you are saving your drawing in the Drawings folder. If you are not in this folder, click on the down arrow that appears in the Save In: box and click on the Drawings folder. In the filename: box, enter your initials (or your partner's) followed by the number "2". Click on Save. The outside corners of most MP3 players are rounded. To do this you need to use the Trim tool in the Edit menu. First you must select the MP3 Player (click on the Select Direct tool and then click on your drawing). Select Edit from the Menu bar and select Trim and then click on Round. The cursor changes to a circle. Move the cursor, which is now a small circle, to the top line of the outside rectangle of the MP3 player and click. The line is now highlighted in a different color. Move the cursor to the left line of the outside rectangle and click. The top left corner is now rounded. Repeat this process for the remaining three outside corners. You will now draw some circles in your player. Select any of the circle tools you prefer. Center your circles on coordinates (4.00", 3.00"). Draw three concentric circles with the following radius: 0.50", 1.00" and 1.25". Select the circle with 1.00" radius, and using the line width tool from the Property bar, change the line width to 0.055". Select the inner circle, which has a radius of 0.50", and fill it with the color of your preference, using the Solid Color menu from the Content Librarian. NOTE: As you make changes in your drawing, you may lose sections of the grid. You may use the Redraw tool periodically to renew all grid lines. Also do not forget to periodically save your drawing. You may have observed that the player you have drawn is bigger than any MP3 player you have seen. Drawings are often made in sizes that allow for easier drawing. The resulting drawings may be bigger or much smaller than the real products. The final drawing should always show all dimensions to assure its accurate specification. This is easily done with the scaling and dimensioning functions in AutoSketch In order to scale your drawing, first select the entire MP3 player. You can accomplish this by either selecting the Select All button in the All-In-One toolbar, or select Edit from the Menu bar, then click on Select and then on All. Click on Edit and select Transform and then select Scale. Tech-Design by Lab-Volt 13

Create a Technical Drawing Computer-Aided Design The major grid spacing represents 1 inch. Your drawing appears to depict a device that is 4 inches by 9 inches in size. Probably half that size would be more reasonable for an MP3 player. 13. Move your cursor to the Scaling Factor box, which is located in the Edit Bar. There should be a check mark in the box and 1.00 is displayed as the scaling factor. Change the scaling factor to.50 by double-clicking on the scaling factor to highlight it and then enter.50. Press the Enter key Scaling Factor Box Move your cursor on the MP3 player drawing and click once to scale it. Your drawing is now drawn to scale. You may want to click on the Redraw button to refresh your grid. In order to display the dimensions of your device, click on Draw from the Menu bar and select Dimension and then Horizontal. Move the cursor to the left edge of your drawing and click. Then move the cursor to the right edge of your drawing and click. The overall horizontal dimension is displayed. Follow a similar procedure for the vertical dimension. You can dimension any part in your drawing in the same way you just did. Try dimensioning any other part of the drawing you feel needs a dimension You will now draw a border around your drawing. Click on the Rectangle tool on the All-In-One toolbar. Draw a box around the entire drawing, leaving room between the border and the drawing so that you can add a title box to the bottom right of the border. The lines in your border should be thicker than the ones in your drawing, so you must change the width of the line. First select the line using the Select Direct tool. Click on the down arrow that appears next to the Width button on the Property bar and select the Thicker line. Now draw another box, called the title box, in the right corner. Click on the Line Single tool and draw a horizontal line in your title box so you have a top half and a bottom half, approximately the same size. You are ready to add the title and your name to your drawing. Click on the Text Point tool on the All- In-One toolbar. Move the cursor to where you want the text to appear in the top box and click. Type MP3 PLAYER and then press the Enter key on the keyboard. Type your name and your partner s name in the bottom box in the same way. To move the text, select it using the Select Direct tool and drag it to its new location. When you are finished, select File and then Save to save your drawing. Select File and then Exit to exit AutoSketch. 14 Tech-Design by Lab-Volt
