2 The purpose of the document is to provide detailed instructions for updating the AFE4403 Watch firmware to factory default. Table 1 lists the hardware and software tools required to update the firmware on the AFE4403 Watch EVM. Flash Programmer for TI s MSP430 MCUs 1.1. Download the Flash Programmer (FET-Pro430-Lite-Setup.zip) from Elprotronic Website ( Unzip the zipped file to a temp directory and run setup.exe Follow the instructions to install the Flash programmer. Check the option Install USB-Driver for MSP Tools during the installation process as shown in Figure 1. UPGRADE FIRMWARE 1. Setup AFE4403 Watch for JTAG programming Figure1. Install USB-Driver for MSP Tools option 1.1. Verify the AFE4403 Watch EVM is turned off. Flip the watch bottom case facing up as shown in Figure 2. Remove the four screws with screwdriver, holding the top and bottom watch cases together. Figure 2 shows the arrows pointing to the screws to be removed. Page 2

3 Figure 2 Screws to be removed indicated by the arrows When screws have been removed, separate TOP and BOTTOM watch case. Pry gently to separate TOP and BOTTOM watch cases by inserting the screwdriver gently in the opening indicated with arrow shown in Figure 3. Figure 3. Remove the watch board screws as shown in Figure 4 to get access to the JTAG connector on the top side of the AFE4403 Watch EVM. Page 3

Slide the switch shown in Figure 6 to ON position to power on the AFE4403 Watch EVM using the battery or connect the microusb cable to the microusb connector and the PC 1.6. Connect the USB cable to the MSP430 USB-Debug-Interface MSP-FET430UIF tool and the PC Connect the Tag Connect cable to the MSP-FET430UIF tool and to the 10-pin JTAG footprint on the AFE4403 Watch EVM. The firmware is available at SVTronics website ( HRMWatch_v2.2-OSRAM Sensor.txt for OSRAM SFH7050 sensor board HRMWatch_v2.2-NJRC Sensor.txt for NJRC NJL5310R sensor board Select MSP430F5xx and MSP430F5528 under Group for the Microcontroller type. Click on AUTO PROG. to program the firmware as shown in Figure 8. Page 5

6 Figure 8 Lite FET-Pro430 software Firmware select, microcontroller type and auto program The Lite FET-Pro430 software will update the MSP-FET430UIF tool with the latest Flash programmer firmware for the first time. This is a one step process. Click on Start Update and when update is complete, click on Exit as shown in Figure 9 and Figure 10. Figure 9 MSP-FET430UIF start firmware update Page 6

If programming is successful, DONE message will be displayed in the Report

If programming is successful, DONE message will be displayed in the Report window and Pass will be displayed in the Status box. Figure 11. FET-Pro430 Programmer - Programming Status Page 7

Remove the JTAG cable and slide the switch to the OFF position or remove the microusb cable from the AFE4403 Watch EVM Place the watch board screws back into position as shown in Figure Snap the bottom case to the top case and place the bottom case screws back into position as shown in Figure 2.
