1 Walkabout Express Operating Instructions Addendum (L ) This addendum applies to Walkabout Express portables operating with software version 5.0 or higher. Version 5.0 software changes affect the NEW and SET main menu options, and the recording procedure. Changes are summarized as follows: NEW: Expanded header list. SET: There are now two user modes ENHANCED and BASIC. Each mode has different SET options (Table 2, page 2). The changes are indicated in Table 3, page 2. While recording: BASIC mode users can only save files as completed (COMP), and may use NEXT to start a new file. Recording procedures for ENHANCED users are the same as in earlier software versions (Figure 3, page 6). To update the software on your portable, see Software Updates on page 4. Check back of portable for a Voicedata M card. Note: Card readers only support 2 MB Voicedata M cards. 2. Install a fully charged battery. 3. Format the Voicedata M card. Note: Format all new Voicedata M cards prior to first use. 4. Set the portable s date and time. 5. Using SET menu options, customize the portable for your Enterprise Express System by specifying headers (HEADERS) and creating user accounts IDs (AUTHOR ID). See Figure Set the USER MODE of the portable to BASIC or ENHANCED (default). When the portable is in the ENHANCED mode, users can: Access all SET menu options (Table 2). Change recording type SET menu options while recording a file (VOX, VOF/ADJ/VOX THRESHOLD, CONF/DICT). Specify the status of the voice file (PCM, INC, COMP). 3

4 4 When the portable is in the BASIC mode: Configuration type options are no longer available in the SET menu. There is only one step (NEXT) to starting a new job because all files are automatically saved as COMP. Recording type options can only be changed from the SET menu not during a recording session. Users must select END to return to the Main menu before transferring recordings via the Docking Station. Software Updates Use this procedure to update your portable: 1. Remove the power supply (battery pack or AC adapter) and Voicedata M card from the portable. 2. Insert the new application software Voicedata M card. 3. Reapply power to the portable, while simultaneously depressing the Menu and Backlight buttons until DOWNLOAD REQ is displayed. 4. Press the left soft key to select the MCARD option. The MCARD VALID message is displayed. 5. Select the LOAD option to begin the software download or select QUIT to stop. 6. When the REMOVE MCARD PLEASE... message is displayed, remove the Voicedata M card. The portable automatically resets itself. An ERROR NO MCARD message is displayed. 7. Install and format a blank Voicedata M card that you will use for recording dictations: a. Press SET, rotate the Thumb-wheel to locate FORMAT MCARD, and then press to select. b. Press YES to format and YES to confirm. You are returned to the SET menu when formatting is complete. c. Press the Menu button to return to the Main menu.

5 Using the Portable to Record Figure 3 (see page 6) illustrates how you record a voice file using the Walkabout Express portable using both the ENHANCED and BASIC modes. Note that only ENHANCED mode users can access these options while recording a file: BOF/EOF, VOX/VOF, and CONF/DICT, and have the option of saving partial files (INC, PCM, COMP). You must press DEL, SAVE, or NEXT, END to exit a recording. Table 4 describes options that are displayed after a file is opened and the Slide Control is in the Stop position. Use BOF to move to the beginning of the active recording file. Use EOF to go to the end of the recording file. Use SAVE to save a recording on the portable in one of three formats (INC, PCM, COMP). BASIC mode Use to automatically save a recording as Completed (COMP) and begin a new file. Use to save a recording as Completed (COMP) and exit to the Main menu (Figure 1). 6 STEPS TO CREATING A VOICE FILE 1. Press the Menu button when the Slide Control is in the Stop position, and then press NEW from the Main menu. 2. Header prompts: 2a. Rotate Thumb1. wheel to input.
