Japanese-European De-Icing Aircraft Collaborative Exploration: the JediAce project Nadine Rehfeld, Fraunhofer IFAM, Germany Gerhard Pauly, Fraunhofer IFAM, Benoit Berton, Dassault Aviation SA; Hideki Soejima, Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.; Shigeo Kimura, ; Katsuaki Morita, JAXA; Francesc Diaz, Universitat Rovira i Virgili
JediAce aimed to provide an innovative concept of an Integrated Ice Protection System for Aircraft Wings Project Duration: Nov 2012 to April 2016 Budget: ~ 3,1 M
JediAce dealt with three technical objectives: 1. An active ice protection device based on electro-thermal or mechanical actuation, combined with supporting passive anti-icing coatings 2. An ice sensor system for real-time measurements of ice accretion on aircraft structures Anti-icing coating Active ice protection component 3. An integrated ice protection system with complementary components for excellent operation properties Ice sensor system real-time measurements Simplified sketch of the integrated system

Exemplary Results out of European-Japanese cooperation (1): (1) Development of icephobic coatings Superhydrophobic coatings for areas behind leading edge Elastomeric hydrophobic coatings for all areas (2) Heating devices combined with icephobic coatings to Improve ice prevention on heated / unheated surfaces Reduce energy consumption
Exemplary Results out of European-Japanese cooperation (2): (3) Development of Waveguide Ice Sensor Flush-mounted point sensor Use of photonic signal close to the surface Attenuation increase after ice accretion (4) Material and components testing Construction of new ice wind tunnel at Fraunhofer IFAM Comprehensive ice test program
European-Japanese test campaigns Icing wind tunnels in the JediAce project: Fraunhofer IFAM, Germany, Japan
State-of-the-art coating (benchmark) Fraunhofer IFAM - IWT results Formation of ice at leading edges, equipped with heating devices and covered with different coatings Elastomeric anti-icing coating Superhydrophobic anti-icing coating
- IWT results Formation of runback ice on mock-ups, equipped with heating devices and covered with different coatings Runback ice NO runback ice State-of-the-art coating (benchmark) Elastomeric anti-icing coating Superhydrophobic anti-icing coating
Fraunhofer IFAM - IWT results of developed ice sensors Early-Alert Waveguide Ice Sensor - Flush-mounted point sensor (URV)
Final Project Conclusions Different components for ice protection system of aircraft have been developed and evaluated in the frame of JediAce project: High performance electro-thermal heating devices are required to prevent ice formation. Anti-icing coatings show high potential to support heating devices. Benefit of different coating approaches could be proven, depending on ice formation type. Novel sensor technology for Real-Time monitoring of Aerodynamic surface icing with high sensitivity to micrometric ice could be developed. Integration concepts on aircraft level defined on basis of JediAce results.
Further achievements resulting from European-Japanese cooperation: Evaluation of test methods for Anti-icing coatings Assessment of surface properties and icing behavior prior to wind tunnel tests: Fraunhofer: Ice chamber JAXA: Spraying Test : Chupa Chap Test JAXA: Contact and Sliding angle JAXA: Shear Force Test Fraunhofer: Fraunhofer: Ice rain test Pendulum test
JediAce allowed important step towards fundamental understanding on Which parameters are relevant for improved anti-icing performance? Which lab tests correlate with findings in icing tunnel? How can the assessment of anti-icing coatings be optimized? ANNOUNCEMENT!!! Fraunhofer IFAM is planning an International Workshop dealing with SURFACE ICING and ASSESSMENT of DE-ICING / ANTI-ICING TECHNOLOGIES January 2017
Final conclusions: Great experience to work in this European / Japanese consortium ICING is still a challenging technology topic Next step is to convert JediAce results in a proposed follow-up project (JediAce II) to System Demonstration Level and Full Scale Prototype JediAce project partners have identified a joint way forward : Agreement about using established cooperation to proceed with the successful development work on research and industry level Contacting of further potential partners to collaborate in future project Definition of research and development tasks
Acknowledgement TheJediAce project has received funding from the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement no the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry
