2 Executive Summary: The present document reports on the development of the POLYSYS project website. 4 1 Introduction POLYSYS project is a specific targeted research project (STREP) co funded by the European Commission, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) under the seventh framework programme (FP7). POLYSYS started on October 1 st 2010 and is expected to conclude on September 30 th The consortium consists of five (5) beneficiaries: one academic partner (Institute of Communication and Computer Systems/National Technical University of Athens ICCS/NTUA), one research institute (Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI) and three companies (Alcatel Thales III V lab ATL, GigOptix GO and Teleoptix Linkra TEO). Within POLYSYS, the beneficiaries form a team aiming at creating optoelectronic and electronic components based on polymers and InP materials and capable of operating directly at 100 Gb/s for implementing ultra high speed optical interconnects. 2 Objectives of POLYSYS website The development of the POLYSYS website is a task falling into the WP7 activities of the project that relate to the dissemination and the exploitation of the project results. From a practical point of view, the availability of the website also enforces the efficient administrative and technical management of the project since the website intends to serve as a point of reference for exchange of information and documents between the consortium members and at the same time to enable information flow towards the European Commission officers and the project reviewers. More specifically, the website was designed so as to fulfil the following objectives: 1) To present the profile of POLYSYS to the visitors of the site (members of the scientific community, people from industry, general public). 2) To efficiently present the POLYSYS specific objectives, methodology and progress on the research activities. This targets in particular the members of the scientific community and the people from industry and aims at attracting their interest, increasing the visibility of the project and creating a momentum for POLYSYS technology and prototypes in the next years. 3) To establish the website as an interesting point of reference from people coming from different scientific fields, i.e. polymer science, high speed electronics and optoelectronics and optical communications. To fulfil this, the website has been designed so as to contain information and news from recent developments in these fields and announcements for relevant events (conferences, workshops, etc). 4) To become a point of reference for the consortium members concentrating the main documents and enabling flow of information between the partners. 5) To facilitate efficient information flow and submission of documents to the EC. 5 3 The POLYSYS website 3.1 General information The URL of the website is polysys.eu. The website with all the relevant files is hosted at the server of Photonics Communication Research Laboratory (PCRL) of the ICCS/NTUA. For the development of the website, ICCS/NTUA used the open source content management system (CMS) Drupal 6 [1]. The choice for using a CMS was made in order to facilitate ease of use and frequent updates of the website content. A free web tracker system [2] has been incorporated for tracking information about the site visitation and in particular the distribution of the visitors over time and geographical regions. The proper appearance, functionality and general compatibility of the website with the most popular internet browsers have been tested and verified. 3.2 Structure and basic functionalities A screenshot of the home page is depicted in Figure 1. On the central region it contains a short description of the project objective and a figure that summarizes the concept and the envisaged development of polymer based optical interconnects. The primary and secondary links of the site appear on top. On the left panel of the selected theme, latest news and contact information are available, whereas on the right panel selected secondary links including the main pages of the project description are presented. 6 The set of primary links contains a page for logging in as administrator in order to enable reconfiguration, maintenance and update of the website. A screenshot is shown in Figure 2. The main pages that describe the profile and the core objectives and activities of the project are five (5) and are included in the right panel of the theme. The first one provides an overview of POLYSYS project, representing its factsheet as it can be seen in Figure 3. This page intends to provide the basic information to all visitors of the site. The second presents the POLYSYS consortium and provides a very brief description of the role of each partner within the POLYSYS work plan. The relevant screenshot is illustrated in Figure 4. The third page is named Objectives and presents the main technological challenges that POLYSYS is aiming at addressing including advancement in monolithic and hybrid integration of polymers, and development of high speed receivers and electronic circuits. The next link presents in a more concrete manner the three discrete devices that POLYSYS has committed itself to deliver by system integration and packaging of the developed modules. Artistic layouts of the envisaged devices support the introduction of POLYSYS to the visitors of the website. Three short paragraphs refer to the structure of the devices and describe the corresponding fields of application. The subset of Objectives and Devices and Applications pages provides insight on the POLYSYS technology, methodology and potential impact, and target the scientific community and the people from industry in order to attract their interest on the project activities. The screenshots from the two pages are shown in Figure 5 and Figure 6. The last link of this entity is called News and will provide latest news from the progress on project activities and public presentations of POLYSYS, as well as news from other ongoing activities and events that are relevant to the scientific fields of POLYSYS project. In this way, the website is aiming at becoming a point of reference for these fields increasing its visitation. Page 6

These documents include deliverables with public dissemination level, publications achieved through the project activities, press releases and white papers. A last page of this entity lists external links to organizations and collaborating projects. Examples of this type of links that were inserted during the set up of the page include links to the ICT [3], the Photonics21 initiative [4] and the EURO FOS network of excellence [5]. Last but not least, the specific page will provide access to fundamental or more advanced scientific documents that are relevant to the scope and the scientific challenges of POLYSYS project. The private section of the website has been designed so as to facilitate ease in exchange of information between the project beneficiaries. It contains links that allow the consortium members as authorized users for accessing main documents of the project, deliverables with a restricted level of dissemination, confidential presentations and working documents, minutes from meetings and phone conferences, internal reports and any other type of supporting documents. The screenshot of the central page of the private section is illustrated in Figure 8. Finally, a special area has been created, devoted to the EC officers and the external evaluators of the project. Within this area, the authorized users will have the possibility to see and download specific documents such as the deliverable reports. In this way, a most efficient information flow from the project coordinating team to the EC is intended. The screenshot of the login page of the reviewers area is presented in Figure 9. Page 9

11 3.3 Future steps Future steps include optimization of the website for search with popular search engines and continuous updates of the website content with insertion of relevant material from the research activities of the project, as well as from external links. The look and feel of the website will be continuously re assessed in order to enhance its visitation and enable its most functional role in the exchange of information between the POLYSYS beneficiaries. 4 Conclusions The document reported on the development and the availability of POLYSYS website ( The structure and the content of its pages were designed so as to contribute to the visibility of the project towards the scientific community, the industry and the general public, to facilitate the communication between the project beneficiaries and information flow from the POLYSYS management team to the European Commission.
