1 How to Attend a DiscoverSkills Webinar John Lortz (jlortz@discoverskills.com) DiscoverSkills ( Here is what to expect when you attend one of my Webinars! After you initially sign-up for the Webinar, you ll get a thank-you that includes a link to the webinar. You will also get 2 or 3 reminder s with the same link. The day of the Webinar you will get an from me with a link to download the handout (in PDF form) and a link to the webinar (in case you ve lost the other ones). When you click the link to attend the Webinar o You are taken to a Registration Page where you need to enter your name and address (even though you are already registered). Here is what it looks like o Enter Your Name, then your , and click the REGISTER NOW button. VIEWING TIP You may have to SCROLL DOWN to see the complete page. To zoom out in your browser, hold the CTRL key and scroll the wheel of your mouse. (this is a trick for zooming in and out of a web page). 2 o After clicking the Register Now button you are taken to a THANK YOU screen o Click the JOIN WEBINAR NOW button to move to the Webinar Page. What you will see next depends upon if you are using a computer, or a mobile device (smartphone or tablet) to attend the Webinar. 3 Attending with a Computer Here s what the main webinar screen looks like on a computer (desktop or laptop) Refresh Full Screen Chat Volume o The PRESENTATION will appear on the left. Here you ll see my screen or whatever I m trying to show you. During the presentation I ll probably switch between a slide presentation and my actual computer screen. o You can CHAT by typing in messages at the bottom of the right panel, and pressing ENTER to send them. Everyone attending can see your chat messages. o At the lower right of the screen are two buttons. One is a VOLUME control button, and the other will take you to FULL SCREEN mode if clicked. You also have a VOLUME control on the right side of your Windows Taskbar, by your time/date. If you go to FULL SCREEN the Chat window is hidden. o During the, you can click your browser REFRESH button if I m suddenly cut-off, or if you think you ve been accidently disconnected. 4 Attending with a Tablet (example: ipad) When you enter the Webinar with a tablet, what you see depends upon the orientation (landscape or portrait) of your device. In Portrait you only see the presentation screen In Landscape you see the presentation screen And the Chat box With a tablet, when you are in LANDSCAPE orientation (sideways), the screen will look just about the same as it does on a computer Refresh Chat With a tablet in PORTRAIT orientation (up and down), the CHAT area is cut off and all you see is the presentation However, in BOTH CASES notice that as soon as you enter, the presentation is NOT YET PLAYING! 5 Attending with a SmartPhone (example: iphone) With a smartphone, you won t be able to see the Chat box, just the presentation. But just as with the tablet, when you first enter the Webinar it will NOT BE PLAYING! To start the presentation, you need to tap the arrow in the middle of the presentation screen. The webinar will start playing. Also note that you can turn your smartphone to Landscape orientation (sideways) to have the presentation fill your screen. TROUBLESHOOTING If you do not hear any sound. o Adjust the volume control on the Webinar page (see the screen shot on page 2) o Adjust the volume control on the right side of the Windows taskbar o If you have external speakers, make sure they are turned on and the volume control on the speaker is turned up If you seem to get disconnected. o Close your browser completely, then go back to your message (that includes the webinar link) and click it again to rejoin the webinar. You ll have to register again, but that won t cause any problems. If the presentation seems jumpy. o Your internet connection may be too slow to see the presentation smoothly, which is something that is out of your control.
