1 Software Announcement February 27, 2001 Tivoli NetView for OS/390 R4: Advanced TCP/IP Management for the Enterprise Overview Tivoli NetView for OS/390 Release 4 (R4) delivers new TCP/IP management services for OS/390 and z/os. R4 extends its powerful automation functions to distributed UNIX environments. These new management services expand NetView s reach in delivering scalable operations management resulting in improved availability for Enterprise environments. Advanced TCP/IP Management for the Enterprise In addition to new TCP/IP communication services (including TN3270 client, REXEC, and Remote Shell (RSH) server and client), R4 gives operators additional graphical views for monitoring TCP/IP connection status, diagnosing problems, and controlling distributed devices. R4 also provides TCP/IP trace management, real-time graphing of any standard Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) MIB-based performance data, and interactive control of devices. Special support is provided for real-time status information on the OS/390 and z/os TCP/IP stack and TN3270 connections. New UNIX Support NetView s proven automation engine can now receive any standard message logged to a UNIX system log, including those from OS/390 and z/os UNIX System Services (USS). UNIX messages can trigger a number of actions, including centralized commands or REXEC commands to start or stop services, provide operator notification, and/or log the message (UNIX message processing is in addition to NetView s trap processing capability made available in R3.). Management Services for Large Enterprises R4 provides new management services to address the needs of large enterprises. OS/390 or z/os console commands can now be modified automatically prior to execution, or for unauthorized operators, suppressed entirely. NetView R4 can suppress the reporting of status changes for devices that are out of service due to a scheduled outage. The NetView Management Console (NMC) has been enhanced to further exploit Web technology for launching any browser-based tools, such as device-specific management applications. New graphical views are provided to display the health of internal tasks of a single or multiple NetViews. Drag-and-drop techniques may be used to build customized NMC views easily. Improved Productivity The effort required to configure NetView has been reduced with R4 s simplified configuration definitions and expanded use of Sysplex environment system symbolics. Key Prerequisites One of the following: OS/390 V2R8 (5647-A01), or later z/os (5694-A01) For a detailed description of the hardware and software prerequisites, refer to the Technical Information section. 2 Description Tivoli NetView for OS/390 Release 4 (R4) provides these additional enhancements. TCP/IP and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) Management Building on the TCP/IP and SNMP management capabilities in Tivoli NetView for OS/390 V1R2 and V1R3, this new release of NetView now has the following additional capabilities: REXEC client support (available from the command line or in a pipe) provides for execution of functions in remote systems. REXEC server support executes a command sent from a remote host. Remote Shell (RSH) client support (also available from the command line or in a pipe) starts a UNIX shell on a remote system and executes a single command in that shell. RSH ends on the target host when the command ends. RSH server support executes a command sent from a remote host to NetView. NetView IPLOG receives forwarded UNIX system log messages, which can then pass through NetView automation. TN3270 support allows you to log in to remote TCP/IP-connected systems, either from the NetView command line, or from the NetView Management Console (NMC). NetView provides device management using SNMP (SNMPVIEW). This provides information about TCP/IP stacks and resources including: System definition being used with selected values set-able Interface array Real-time display of interface connections IP, TCP, and UDP real-time statistics data Manage TCP/IP sessions from the convenience of a Web browser: display session information, diagnose problems, even drop sessions. A wide range of TCP/IP and SNMP commands are supported, including ping, tracerte, get, walk, set, and more. HOST and INFC SNMP traps can be correlated to determine if a host that is having problems is associated with a reported interface problem. To manage diagnostic traces to help resolve TCP/IP problems, across multiple domains, from one focal point NetView, users can: Start and stop component and packet traces Display active traces Display trace status The TN3270 server function has been extended to support multiple TN3270 interfaces on the Cisco CIP. The following additional capabilities are available from the NMC: A real-time poller that enables the operator to select an SNMP-managed resource, poll performance and other data for the resource, and display the poll reply data in a customizable graphical format

3 The ability to discover and manage OS/390 TCP/IP stack resources and Telnet 3270 servers and clients as views in the NMC. You can set filters so that you collect only the information you need. The ability to monitor TCP/IP session statistics including FTP. The NMC user can access information from all sessions started for a selected TCP/IP host. Wildcards are supported when specifying resource names. The ability to issue menu-driven, resource-specific TCP/IP commands against any resource with an IP address: netstat, ping, remote ping, tracerte. A UNIX System Services command line that allows operators to issue any standard UNIX System Services commands for which they are authorized. Installation, Customization, Usability, Reliability The time required to install and customize NetView for OS/390 R4 is significantly reduced: Initialization and customization are simplified by consolidation or elimination of parameter files, expanded use of system symbolics, and introduction of the CNMSTYLE initialization member in DSIPARM to provide a central location for many customizable initialization parameters. Documentation improvements include separating the install manuals into four books, one for each: new users, migration, advanced topics, and graphics. The MultiSystem Manager command sets are now included in the default NMC database, eliminating a step in the installation and configuration process. Other Enhancements Include The HTML-based tutorial now includes both an operator tutorial and a systems programmer tutorial. REXX-style logic can be coded in initialization members to allow for conditional inclusion of files and assignment of parameter values, based on settings in CNMSTYLE. The NetView LIST command displays operator information (excluding passwords) stored in the NETVIEW, BASE, LANGUAGE, or OMVS segments in OS/390 or z/os Security Server, even if the operator is not logged on or cannot log on. The main menu now shows only those menu items that are available. If a menu item is not active, you can choose not to display the item on the menu or show it grayed out. The ASSIGN command now allows you to establish the priority of an assignment and to specify which assignment takes precedence if a MSG = assignment and MEMBER = assignment both match on a message. Exploitation of the MVS Load-to-Global function strengthens NetView s already robust reliability. You can use MVS Workload Manager (WLM) to balance the workload among NetView tasks. When WLM is enabled, NetView calls WLM during task initialization and passes it the task information to allow WLM to assign it to the appropriate service class. Each service class can be given different performance goals and importance. Network Management and Graphical Support There are many enhancements to the network management capabilities of NetView and also enhancements to the NetView Management Console, providing operators more enterprise visibility and control. Session Monitor provides up-to-date outboard Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking (APPN ) path information for sessions through 221x or other DLUR-connected routers that support the HPR Session Awareness architecture. NetView graphical SNA topology supports new attributes for Logical Units (LU) and Logical Links involved in TN3270 sessions. For LUs, these attributes report client IP address, client port address, and client DNS name. For Logical Links, these attributes report DLUR local LS address and DLC name. The new NetView Resource Manager (NRM) monitors and manages NetView tasks, including their status and resources (such as CPU and storage usage), on all your connected NetView systems from a single NMC. MSM Tivoli Management Region (TMR) agent, which displays information about your Tivoli resources and monitors, now offers additional data collection options and improved performance. RODM Collection Manager provides both a wizard and drag-and-drop capability for dynamically building customized views and aggregates with object groupings of your choice. Views now support dynamic updates. In addition to retrieving inventory data from Tivoli inventory for IBM and Cisco network interconnect devices, you can now retrieve data for other resource types (such as managed nodes and end points) for which the inventory database has data. This can include both software and hardware information. Other enhancements to NMC include: Schedule-sensitive status reporting. For resources that are down for scheduled maintenance, this allows status reporting to be suspended as well. The NMC View Bar grid layout allows you to see more views in the View Bar without scrolling than the former single row of views allowed. The NMC Web Launch Exit enables access to OEM resource-specific diagnostic pages. The NMC client can act as a Web server, allowing users on Web browsers to see NMC views in view-only mode. Icons are resizable. The Java Application Server (JAS) point-and-click GUI allows the NMC user to start, stop, and display current status of OS/390 Java services. These functions are also available from the NetView and operating system command line facilities. Automation Automation policy can now exploit the calendar capabilities supplied with the CHRON command. Also, the existing automation policy repository has been repackaged to allow access by other NetView components including NMC, and by user and vendor applications. NetView s Automated Operations Network (AON) component now supports new VTAM commands and enhancements to display TCP/IP data in the VTAM DISPLAY command. MVS and subsystem commands entered from any MVS console or console interface can be managed by

4 automatically intercepting and optionally modifying them before passing them on for execution. For unauthorized operators, the commands can also be suppressed entirely. Remote commands (RMTCMD) can now be sent to other NetView domains over TCP/IP sessions (in addition to existing LU6.2 support). NetView s Timer function has been enhanced to provide cross-system support. Timer can now schedule sysplex timers (AT, EVERY, AFTER, and CHRON) via function provided by System Automation for OS/390 when that product is installed on your systems. Euro Currency This program is not impacted by euro currency. Product Positioning Tivoli NetView for OS/390 V1R4 provides a comprehensive set of tools for maintaining complex, multivendor, multiplatform networks and systems from a single point of control. NetView provides management functions that work in cooperation with other products or can function alone. NetView as a stand-alone management application manages TCP/IP resources and SNA resources, and provides automation facilities to automate any network or system event. Examples of products that work with NetView for OS/390 are System Automation for OS/390 ( ) and Tivoli NetView (5698-NVW). NetView provides the automation services and graphical topology services for SA/390. SA/390 s strength is OS/390 and z/os system automation; Tivoli NetView for OS/390 provides integrated network automation. Also, Tivoli NetView for OS/390 can receive discovered IP resource topology from Tivoli NetView (5698-NVW) running on a UNIX or Windows NT platform to show an enterprise-wide view of the network, track resource status, and issue commands. Tivoli NetView for OS/390 can also forward collected management information to other management applications. For example, OS/390 messages and/or events can be sent to Tivoli Enterprise Console (TEC) as events for end-to-end correlation, action, and display. Additionally, Tivoli NetView for OS/390 provides management services to Tivoli Business Systems Manager for its handling of OS/390 and z/os subsystems such as CICS, DB2, and IMS. With its open APIs, NetView for OS/390 can be an integration point for both S/390 vendors and distributed vendors. NetView for OS/390 is a program for managing networks and systems through graphical display and automation. It reduces manual resource definition and complex automation setup through production-ready automation and extends centralized management into multiple non-sna network environments. NetView for OS/390 can be used in an enterprise as a centralized manager, a mid-level manager, or an S/390 management endpoint.
