In addition to being able to be used in extended temperature, high-vibration and shock environments, the Matrix s fanless design is ideal for use in dusty environments, such as those found in sorting offices, print works and other industrial environments. Standard industrial PCs with fan cooling often fail due to the accumulation of dust within the computer, leading to overheating, and will either need to be pulled offline to be cleaned, or replaced. Fanless computers do not experience this problem, which make them ideal for use in dusty environments. 2. 3 1. Unmanned traffic monitoring 2. Road tolling Remote observation and identification of traffic infractions in our cities has become widespread in the last decade. Any remote observation and identification system needs to incorporate functions. Activity must be accurately monitored and events captured. The system then needs to perform further analysis to determine if a traffic violation has occurred. Lastly, a record must be remitted to a control centre. The critical system requirements thus combine powerful computing performance together with high-speed data transmission capabilities. Road tolls are collected either by manned tollbooths, automatic number plate recognition, or wireless electronic toll collection systems. The main function of a tollbooth lane is to identify, record, and control passage of vehicles, to transact toll payments and transmit acquired information to the control centre. Toll payment information is usually monitored and aggregated at each local control centre and subsequently reported to central administration for further processing. Typically, traffic monitoring systems are deployed in environments with little or no protection from exposure to the elements and pollutants, factors which must be prevented from impairing system results. Also, in a deployed system, remote maintenance and management costs are highly significant to operating companies. 4 3. In-vehicle multimedia and surveillance The popularity of in-vehicle multimedia access is increasing with the evolution of digital content and distances travelled. Bus and train passengers can experience an improved quality of travel when accompanied by music, video, and the ability to access the internet. In addition, the demand for in-vehicle surveillance technologies is also expanding. Given the limited space available in vehicles, meeting these requirements is a challenge. In-vehicle systems must provide multimedia content, along with data acquisition from both inside and outside the vehicle, with transmission of the data to centralised control facilities. Finally, the system must operate effectively under high vibration and shock typically found in moving vehicles, as well as being able to withstand frequent temperature fluctuations. Combining a solid mechanical design and discrete circuit layout, the Matrix 5300 series offers a rugged platform suitable for severe operating environments as well as versatile I/O to meet the needs of these multiple applications, while being small enough to fit easily into most vehicles.
