Whilst we will continue to report the amount of material added to the collection, we will revisit the appropriateness of setting a target for acquisitions since NLS does not have sufficient control over the volume of material collected via legal deposit. We control neither the size of the universe available to be claimed, nor the effectiveness of the Agency in claiming. This KPI will be developed to make it more informative. In particular we will look at the material collection through different modes of acquisition, including material received indirectly by the Agency for Legal Deposit Libraries and via direct claiming by NLS, as well as by purchase and donation. 7 Staff Absence breakdown into Short and Long Term Absence Analysis The absence rates continue to be encouraging, with both staff and managers being aware of their responsibilities There is 1. new long term absence case and 3. ongoing long term absence cases in Q1. Short term absence is being more effectively managed by managers..5 Long term absence is being monitored using the new attendance management policy which includes a capability process. Sessions were down across all areas except georeferenced maps (up by over 2, sessions) and NLS blogs (up by over 7, although this includes an unexplained, untypical spike of more than 2 for the family history blog on 1 May). The family history blog went live in April and has proved popular, with over 1, 'entrances' (= blog visits) in Q1. Metrics reveal that 81% of all NLS blog entrances were made by new visitors. Looking at the rest of the NLS online presence that is measured, ew visitors accounted for web sessions as follows: 36% digital.nls.uk 79% maps.nls.uk 44% geo.nls.uk 49% ssa.nls.uk 72% scotbis.com 45% auth.nls.uk 38% Most of these visits came from UK locations. In the case of auth.nls.uk, the UK accounted for 92% of new visitors. We should also note that the Auchinleck Manuscript site (auchinleck.nls.uk) which is currently excluded as a specific domain, saw 58% of sessions come from new visitors, and 42% of its sessions were from locations in the USA. 11

13 Reading Room Visits Apr Jun 212 Target Actual Traffic light at: Reader Visits TBD 17,155 TBD Thousands Our reading room figures for Quarter 1 212/13 follow a similar trend to the quarter 1s in the two preceding years i.e. a reduction in the first quarter of each reporting year. This reflects lower use of our reading rooms and is influenced by the high usage of the reading rooms by academics in the January-March period. Q2 showed a less consistent pattern with a rise in 211/12 but a fall in 21/11. Has there been a real recent shift in uptake of our content on Flickr and Internet Archive, and why? Answering these questions will help with the development of our digitisation strategy.
