Getting Started First to gain full academic access to the system. Creating a reading list is a three-step process: 1. Find and collect the resources you want your students to access using the bookmarklet tool. 2. Organize the resources into a reading list by dragging and dropping elements into your list. 3. Publish the changes to your list, and request a review so the Library can purchase or digitize items as required. Finding your lists 1. Go to Reading Lists Online and sign in with your UNI account, 2. The first time you login, you will be asked to create your profile. This will allow you to own your reading lists. 3. Click My Lists. All lists you have permission to edit will be displayed here. (see figure 1 below) 4. Click on the action drop-down next to the list you want to modify and click Edit. Creating a new list First, check that the list you want is not already on the system: go to the Home screen and search for your module title (or module code). If the list does not exist and you want to create it: 1. Click My Lists and login if prompted. 2. Click Create New List. If this option is not available, report it to rachael.johnson@southwales.ac.uk. 3. Enter the module title and code in the title field. 4. Add a description if required. 5. Add student numbers. 6. The list is now ready to populate with sections and resources, as described in the paragraph below. Creating a list from reference management software You can upload resources from reference management software, e.g. EndNote, directly into your My Bookmarks in the form of an RIS file. The process of uploading the resources is simple: 1. Export the resources from the reference management software and save them to your computer as a.ris file. 2. Go to the reading list system and click the My Bookmarks tab (login if prompted). 3. From the Add bookmark drop-down menu, select Import citation. 4. Browse to, and select the file that contains the references. Click OK. Figure 1. My Lists showing reading lists managed by a list owner Page 2 Reading lists online

You have the option to assemble the uploaded resources automatically into a brand new reading list. If you want to use them to update an existing list, please leave this option unselected. Bookmarks The bookmarklet is an essential tool allowing you to harvest resource information from anywhere on the Web, including books, journal articles, and multimedia resources. You can drop these bookmarks directly into your reading list or save them for later. The bookmarklet Installing the bookmarklet 1. Sign in to Reading Lists Online and click My Bookmarks, 2. Click the Install bookmark button, to the right of the page (see figure 2). 3. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the bookmarklet. This will be added as a button to your browser s toolbar, with a default name of Add to My Bookmarks. 4. To rename the bookmarklet to something more memorable: right click the bookmarklet and select Rename or Properties (depending on browser). Using the bookmarklet 1. Browse to a resource you want to add to your bookmarks and click the bookmarklet button. This will launch the bookmarking screen. 2. Check the resource information for accuracy and completeness. 3. Add extra details if necessary. Use the Add field function to insert individual fields. 4. Click Create to add the resource to your bookmarks, or Create & Add to List to place it directly into a list. The browser tab will then go back to the Web page you bookmarked. 5. To see your new bookmark: go to the My Bookmarks link and refresh the page. Bookmarking resources for your lists Bookmarking a book You can add books to your list from anywhere, but starting with the Library Catalogue is recommended, so you can get an overview of the editions and number of copies already in our University library print and online collections. 1. Find the book on the Library Catalogue, Click Connect to FINDit and make sure the Library Catalogue tab is highlighted in red. Figure 2. My Bookmarks showing items saved and the Install Bookmark Button. Page 3 Reading lists online

2. From within the book record, click the bookmarklet (see figure 3). 3. An editable page will allow you to save this item to My Bookmarks by clicking Create. 4. Alternatively, add this item directly to one of your lists by clicking Create & Add to List. If the book is not held by the Library, you can use the bookmarklet to harvest book details from other providers, such as COPAC, WorldCat, Amazon, or publishers websites. Creating a chapter It may be useful to highlight specific chapters for your students to read. 1. To specify a chapter to read, bookmark a book (as above), then add Has part from the Add field drop-down list. 2. Type the chapter number, chapter title to Title field, and add authors, page range and other details as required. Click Create to save the item to My Bookmarks. Bookmarking a journal article or issue 1. Search FINDit for the journal article or issue, Click Connect to FINDit and make sure the Article Search tab is highlighted in red. 2. Find the item you need and click your bookmarklet. 3. If you are bookmarking an e-journal article, you may find it useful to paste the article s DOI (if available) into the Lookup field. (DOI provides the best metadata and creates the most reliable link to the article.) 4. Please note that not all journal articles have DOIs, and a few entries may have to be completed manually. If the Library does not hold the journal or issue you need, please request a scan. We have permissions granted by the Copyright Licensing Agency to digitize some book chapters and journal articles. Make your request by clicking on Request digitisation and following the instructions, when editing a list. (see figure 4 on page 6). Bookmarking a Web resource 1. From any Web resource, e.g. website, podcast, or video, click the bookmarklet to add it to My Bookmarks. 2. Choose the most appropriate option from the Resource Type drop-down list, e.g. Audio-visual for a YouTube video. Figure 3. Library Catalogue record with browser bookmarklet tool highlighted. Page 4 Reading lists online

3. Check the title given to the page and change it if necessary it needs to make sense to anyone seeing it. 4. You can add extra information such as author or date using the Add field function before clicking Create or Create & Add to List. Editing your bookmarks There may be occasions where you wish to modify bookmarked items. A single edit of your item can change all instances across all lists you manage if you wish. 1. Use the Add field function to insert individual fields, or the Lookup function to import more details using a DOI (journal articles) or ISBN (books). 2. If the item appears more than once across your reading lists, a pop-up window will ask: Do you want to save changes to all occurrences, or just the occurrence on this item. 3. If you want to create a chapter only on this instance, click Just this occurrence. If you want to update the bookmark and all instances of its use in your reading lists, click Change all. 4. Note, take care when adding chapters to bookmarks for books. Consider whether you want to have a chapter for all occurrences of the book item or not. Editing your lists You can fully personalize and design your list to suit your students needs, by using sections to break up the reading into weeks or topics, and by including notes. You could even create your structure to match your Blackboard module. When you first open a reading list to edit, it will ask you if you are the list owner. In the pop-up box, you can either choose to select yourself or defer for now. Working with sections Creating sections enables you to add structure to your readings lists, helping students navigate their way to relevant groups of resources as they work through their studies. These sections may group together readings for specific topics, teaching weeks or seminars, collect essential or recommended items in one place. Sections can be added within existing sections to add further structure to a list. Creating a new section Go to the right-hand panel and drag the new section onto the main list panel. The Add Section pop-up appears. Name it, and add a description using the Study note field. Click Save. The section is now ready for you to add resources to it. Note how the new section appears in the Table of Contents at the top of the list. Creating subsections You can embed a section within an existing section by dragging from the right hand panel, as above, and dropping it where required. You can add as many sections as you want in this way. Changing the structure of a list To move sections within your list, open the Table of Contents and drag the sections to rearrange their order. Please note that deleting headings from this list will also permanently remove the section contents. To edit the Title or Description of a section, click Edit to the right of the section title (within the list) and amend the wording within the pop-up that appears. Deleting sections To delete a section from a list, click Remove to the right of the section title. Deleting a section will remove all the resources within it, but will not delete them from your bookmarks. Adding, editing and removing list resources You need to be in Edit mode to add, edit or remove resources from your list. Adding resources to your list Add resources to the various section of your reading list by dragging and dropping bookmarks from the right hand panel. The dotted line indicates where the Page 5 Reading lists online

resource will be positioned. The resource will remain in your bookmarks, so that you can reuse it, either in the same list or in other lists. Setting importance and adding study notes You can help your students prioritize their reading by adding a Student note and setting the Importance for each resource (see figure 4). Click Set importance and choose the option you want from the drop-down list: 1. Essential 2. Recommended 3. Background These also allow the Library to prioritize acquisition and digitization on the most heavily used items. Alternatively, you can click Edit notes and importance to set the importance and add a Student note to provide guidance about the resource. To change the importance or amend an existing study note, you also click Edit notes and importance. Using library notes Use the Note for library option to send messages to Library staff, e.g. to request more copies or for an item to be moved to Reference only. Library notes will be highlighted to Library staff when you publish your list. Like Student note and Importance, you can add library notes by clicking Edit notes and importance next to a relevant resource. Editing the description of a resource To edit a resource, click Edit metadata and make any changes or amendments. Use the Add field drop-down list to add information. Then click Save. Removing resources from a list To remove a resource from a list, click Remove and then OK (or Cancel if you change your mind). Removing a resource from a list does not remove it from your bookmarks. Save and publish Saving and publishing You can save a draft of your list as you go, by clicking Save Draft in the right hand panel. When you have finished editing your list, click Publish in the right hand panel to ensure your students can see the changes. This will also trigger a review request so that Library staff can check stock levels etc. Figure 4. Library notes and students notes examples. Page 6 Reading lists online

Analyzing your lists usage Using the dashboard The dashboard displays usage statistics for each item on a reading list (see figure 5). This means you can analyze your reading list to see exactly which resources students are using and when, enabling you to better guide students towards often-missed resources by restructuring or annotating your list. Click the Dashboard button to activated bars beneath each resource showing how many times it has been clicked on. The panel allows you to choose a date range for which you want to see the data e.g. last week, last 30 days, last year. Copyright for reading lists online Copyright checking is an important element of item provision within reading lists online. The guidance that follows helps you comply with copyright legislation. Most publishers do not allow PDFs of their content to be placed in Blackboard. Please ensure that your Blackboard content is legal. The University is both a creator, and user, of copyright material, and takes its responsibilities in relation to copyright and other intellectual property seriously. e-books, e-databases and e-journals Large collections of these resources are available through FINDit, via University subscriptions. Direct links to these can be made from within your reading list. Chapters from hard copy textbooks and journals The University has a licence which allows extracts from most books and journals published in the UK (and some foreign titles) to be scanned, by library staff only, for inclusion in Blackboard modules. Newspaper articles Thousands of electronic articles are available through FINDit, via University subscriptions. Direct links to these can be made from within your reading list. You cannot scan hard copy newspaper articles for electronic use without permission. Diagrams, tables, graphs, illustrations and photographs These visual items are copyright material in their own right, and permission is almost always needed, unless the material is included in a publication able to be scanned under the CLA Scanning Licence, can be linked to, or is a Creative Commons image which can usually be reproduced freely, e.g. Wikimedia Commons, Figure 5. Dashboard statistics showing item usage over a selected time period. Reading lists online Page 7

Also try: 1. FindIcons.com, 2. Kozzi.com, 3. Morguefile, 4. Open Clipart Library, 5. StockVault.net, Internet material and Web links It is permissible to link to a homepage. For deep-linking however, look at the Terms & Conditions of Use which may or may not permit deep-linking without permission. Government material (Crown Copyright) Crown copyright material can usually be reproduced and linked to freely for educational purposes, but always check the Terms & Conditions of Use. Music, recordings and multimedia There are lots of free-to-use music databases available online. Try the following: 1. AudioSwap, 2. Free Loops, 3. Jamendo, 4. Music4YourVids, 5. Open Music Archive, 6. Purple Planet, 7. Public Domain 4 U, Help and support Online help Visit the TEACH staff portal for useful links, technical and training updates, and information on new features, Contact us To arrange training, contact your Information Librarian, information/librarians/ For technical issues, including login problems, bookmarking or building lists, contact the Library: rachael.johnson@southwales.ac.uk tel: Copyright support Copyright guidance is available, Page 8 Reading lists online
