5 1. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION SCANNDY Version 1 This version of SCANNDY contains main features like integrated laser-barcode scanner, 168x64 OLED display, integrated Bluetooth Class I communication module and a 19 key rubber keypad. 1.1 MAIN UNIT FRONT VIEW REAR VIEW BOTTOM VIEW 12 Page 4

7 2. SCANNDY BASIC TYPE CRADLE An optional charging and communication cradle (docking station) is a convenient accessory for daily use of SCANNDY. The cradle has a built-in recharging circuit which allows recharging of a spare Li-Ion battery and the SCANNDY battery simultaneously within 4 hours. Regular charging time of the battery pack through DC power adapter is about 12~14 hours. The cradle also allows users to link the SCANNDY unit to host computer through point-to-point RS232, Keyboard Wedge or USB connection for data communication. For PANMOBIL communication the cradle unit is also available with internal Ethernet module, to connect the cradle directly to your local network or transmit and receive data via Internet. This option allows users to access their local hosted data nearly anywhere in the world. For communication between SCANNDY unit and cradle there are two methods available. To send or receive data trough the RS232 connector in the cradle, just place the SCANNDY unit into the cradle. For wireless communication the cradle unit is also available with an internal Bluetooth Class I module. This allows the user to transmit or receive data within a wide range of about 100 meter (depending on local environment). 8 3. GUN-GRIP OPTION In addition to the ergonomic and compact design of the SCANNDYbasic unit PANMOBIL provides a robust gun-grip option. To connect the basic unit to the gun-grip, simply remove the basic battery cover, take out the basic battery and plug the gun-grip to the basic unit. There are no other changes to be done on the basic unit. LEFT VIEW RIGHT VIEW No. Description Function 1 Trigger key Press this key to start the laser-engine for read barcodes 2 Lock button Turn the lock button to horizontal position to lock the contact bottom. Turn the lock button to vertical position to unlock the contact bottom. 3 Release button Press this button and pull the contact bottom (4) after unlocked the lock button (2) to access the gun battery 4 Contact bottom The contact bottom can be of two different kinds. One version to connect cables like RS232, Keyboard-Wedge or USB. For cable connected use. The other version has contact pins for battery charging and RS232 communication with the cradle when the device is used wireless (Bluetooth or WiFi b). Remove the contact bottom to access the gun battery. Page 7

9 4. GUN CRADLE FOR SCANNDY To provide the user with the same performance and flexibility which gives the SCANNDYbasic cradle unit, PANMOBIL offers a special made gun cradle which is designed to use with SCANNDYgun type unit. The gun type cradle unit provides the same features as the basic type cradle unit like flexible cable connections via RS232 cable, Keyboard Wedge cable, USB cable or Ethernet connection. Same as the basic cradle, the gun cradle is also available with internal Bluetooth Class I module for wireless communication between SCANNDY unit and cradle unit. In addition to the mass of function provided by the basic cradle unit, the gun cradle unit adds the possibility to use the SCANNDYgun unit as a fixed mounted terminal ideal for use in retail kiosks, document processing and many others. It only needs minimum of counter space. Setting the device to presentation mode it automatically reads the presented barcode and works without any users handling. TOP VIEW BOTTOM VIEW Page 8

11 5. GETTING STARTED 5.1 CONNECTING THE CRADLE UNIT TO THE HOST COMPUTER SYSTEM 1. Power OFF your computer system 2. Plug the power supply connector into the power jack of the cradle 3. Plug the interface cable into the connector of the cradle 4. Connect the interface cable to the corresponding interface on your computer system 5. Plug the power supply to your wall plug socket to power ON the cradle unit. You will hear a beep melody and the power indicator LED will indicate green light 6. Power ON your computer system DC 6V 1.5A Power Supply Gun Type Cradle Unit COMPUTER System RS232, KBW, Ethernet or USB Cable The cradle unit is now ready to operate. Before start working with the SCANNDY unit please charge the battery for at least 8 hours to make sure the battery is fully charged and provides it s best performance. To charge the battery, place the SCANNDYgun type unit into the gun cradles slot. As soon as the battery starts charging, the power LED indicates red light. When the battery is fully charged, the red LED indicator switches OFF automatically. NOTE: When charging the battery for the first time, please keep the SCANNDY unit into the cradle for min. 8 hours even if the red LED indicator already switched off, to make sure the battery is running on it s best performance! It is important to consider the surrounding temperature whenever you are charging the Li- Ion battery pack. The process is most essential that you charge batteries within the stated range of 8 C to 45 C. Charging batteries outside of the specified range could damage the batteries and shorten their life cycle. Page 10

12 6. OPERATING THE SCANNDY UNIT After the battery is fully charged according to the description in the previous chapter, the SCANNDY unit is now ready to operate. To switch ON the SCANNDY unit press the OK/power key for one second. When the system boots up you can hear a beep melody. Once the SCANNDY is successfully powered ON it automatically starts to establish a Bluetooth connection to the last connected device. While the connection procedure is running. You can see the following screen Bluetooth connection please wait. If Bluetooth connects successfully, the Bluetooth LED indicator shows blue light which indicates that a Bluetooth connection is established. The Bluetooth LED shows blue light as long as the devices are connected. The SCANNDY unit is now ready to scan barcode and shows the following screen. Read Barcode If the Bluetooth connection fails, you can hear an alarm beep and the SCANNDY unit will show a message on the screen as follows Bluetooth connection failed! Page 11

13 Once you receive this message, press any key to accept. You will get the read barcode screen. Now you have to establish a new Bluetooth connection by reading the serial barcode at the backside of the cradle. If the scanned barcode is a valid serial number, the SCANNDY unit starts the Bluetooth connection procedure again and you will see the following screen Bluetooth connection please wait. After few seconds the Bluetooth connection should be established where after the SCANNDY unit is ready to read barcode and transmit the data via Bluetooth to the cradle unit. Read Barcode Each scanned barcode will be displayed on the screen. The screen will scroll automatically. Page 12

14 7. SYSTEM SETUP OF SCANNDY UNIT All major system settings can be made on the SCANNDY unit itself. To access the system setup menu please press the LEFT navigation key. You will see the following screen Run Program Date Time Barcode Bluetooth Serial Display Power Security Reset device To choose one of the system options, please highlight the option you want, by using the UP and DOWN navigation keys and press the LEFT navigation key () to enter the options setup. Each setup menu can be left by pressing the RIGHT navigation key (BACK). 7.1 OPTION RUN PROGRAM Selecting this option will start the installed user application. If there are more then one user application installed, a menu screen will appear where the user can select the application he wants to start. Example: Inventory Terminal mode Collect Barcode.. 15 7.2 OPTION DATE TIME To set the date, time and date/time format please highlight the Date/Time option in the system menu and press the LEFT navigation key to start the Date/Time setup menu. Set Date/Time Date Format Time Format To set the date and time please highlight the Set Date/Time option in the Date/Time menu and press the LEFT navigation key to change the date and time value. Date: Time: 14:01:14 To set the date format please highlight the Date Format option in the Date/Time menu and press the LEFT navigation key to set the date format. Year.Month.Day Month.Day.Year Day.Month.Year To set the time format please highlight the Time Format option in the Date/Time menu and press the LEFT navigation key to set the time format. Page 14

17 7.3 OPTION BARCODE The system software of SCANNDY decodes all major barcode symbologies including Code 39, Code 39 with full ASCII, Code128, Codabar, EAN, UPC, Code 93, Int 2of5, Standard 2of5, Matrix 2of5, ISBN/ISSN and Chinese 2of5. To set up barcode specific option highlight the BARCODE option in the system menu and press the LEFT navigation key to enter the barcode option menu. Symbologies Terminator Preamble Postamble Output Format To set up symbology specific options, highlight the symbologies option in the barcode menu and press the LEFT navigation key to enter the symbologies option menu. *Code 39 *Code 128 *EAN-13 UPC-A. In the symbologies menu you can see all available barcode symbologies. Each symbology which is marked with * is enabled. All others are disabled. To enable or disable a barcode symbology, highlight the one you want to enable/disable and press the TRIGGER key. Page 16

18 To set up symbology specific options, highlight the symbology you want to set up and press the LEFT navigation key () to enter the symbology setup menu. Full Code39:OFF Enable Chk:OFF Send Chk bit:off Send star:on Set code length To change the current setting of the symbology option, highlight the option and press the LEFT navigation key to change the value. The current setting is marked with * ON *OFF You can leave each menu by pressing the RIGHT navigation key (BACK). Changed values will be stored automatically into the non volatile memory of the device. Page 17

19 7.4 SET UP A TERMINATOR Symbologies Terminator Preamble Postamble Output Format Selecting the option Terminator from the barcode menu, allows you to set the terminator character which will be send after each barcode. *None CR LF CR/LF To set up a terminator please highlight the terminator you need and press the LEFT navigation key to select. 20 7.5 SET UP PREAMBLE CHARACTERS Symbologies Terminator Preamble Postamble Output Format Selecting the option Preamble from the barcode menu, allows you to set preamble characters which will be send as a prefix of each barcode. Input Preamble: To set up preamble characters please key in the characters you need by using the key pad. Press the OK key to save. Selecting the option Postamble from the barcode menu, allows you to set postamble characters which will be send as a suffix of each barcode. Input Postamble: To set up postamble characters please key in the characters you need by using the key pad. Press the OK key to save. NOTE: Input of preamble and postamble characters is only available on SCANNDY unit with 19 key rubber keypad. Page 19

To select the format you need, please highlight the format and press the LEFT navigation key () to set up the format. Page 20

22 7.6 SET UP BLUETOOTH OPTIONS On SCANNDY units with built-in Bluetooth module you can set up the necessary Bluetooth settings in the system setup menu. Run Program Date Time Barcode Bluetooth Serial Display Power Security Reset device To set up the Bluetooth options, please highlight the Bluetooth option in the system setup menu and press the LEFT navigation key () to enter the Bluetooth setup menu. Bluetooth: OFF Master Accesskey Slave Accesskey Set Device Name Set SecurityStat To set up a Bluetooth connection, please highlight the Bluetooth:OFF option and press the LEFT navigation key to enter the connection menu. 23 Conn Last Dev Search Dev In the connection menu you can either select to connect to the last connected device or to start searching the Bluetooth neighborhood to find other Bluetooth devices within the range. To connect the SCANNDY unit with the last connected device, please highlight the Conn Last Dev option and press the LEFT navigation key to start the connection procedure. Reconnect to Device x please wait! If the last connected device is within the Bluetooth range, the connection will be established after few seconds. As soon as the devices have successfully connected, the blue LED on SCANNDY unit will indicate blue light as long as the devices are connected. Device X successfully connected! If the last connected device is not within the Bluetooth range or already connected to an other Bluetooth device the connection procedure will fail. Connection failed! Page 22

24 Make sure that the distant Bluetooth device is within the Bluetooth range or is not connected to other devices and start the reconnect procedure again. To search the Bluetooth neighborhood for available Bluetooth devices within the range, please select the Search Device option from the connection menu to start the search procedure. Conn Last Dev Search Dev The SCANNDY unite will than search the Bluetooth neighborhood for available devices and show a list with device name on the screen where you can select the device you want to connect to. Device 1 Device 2 Device 3 Device 4 Highlight the device you want to connect to and press the LEFT navigation key to start the connection procedure where the SCANNDY unit checks the Bluetooth SPP profile is available on the other device and if the Bluetooth password does match. Device 2 successfully connected! If this condition does match, the devices will establish the connection. Page 23

25 7.7 BLUETOOTH ACCESS KEY SETUP To protect the SCANNDY unit from unauthorized connection, you can set up an access key. If an other Bluetooth device wants to connect to the SCANNDY unit, the other device will be prompt to input the access key. If the access key send by the other device does not match with the SCANNDY access key, it is not possible for the other device to establish the connection. Bluetooth: OFF Master Accesskey Slave Accesskey Device Name Set SecurityStat To set up the Bluetooth master access key, please highlight the Master Access Key option from Bluetooth setup menu and press the LEFT navigation key to select Master Accesskey 1234 NOTE The factory default Bluetooth access key is 1234 To change the default access key, please input a new access key and press the OK key to save the new access key. If you do not want to make use of the Bluetooth security option to protect your device by access key you can disable the security settings. Page 24

26 Bluetooth: OFF Master Accesskey Slave Accesskey Device Name Set SecurityStat To change the Bluetooth security settings, please highlight the Set SecurityStat option from the Bluetooth menu and press the LEFT navigation key to enter the security menu. *Enable Pin Disable Pin Please highlight the settings you want to set and press the LEFT navigation key to select. NOTE Disabling the security settings enables other Bluetooth devices to connect to your device unconditionally! Page 25

27 7.8 SET THE BLUETOOTH DEVICE NAME In order to differentiate your Bluetooth device from others, you should set up an unique device name for each Bluetooth device you are using in a Bluetooth neighborhood. This enables you to find your device when start searching the Bluetooth neighborhood from another device. The device name is the name which will be published if the unit is found in the Bluetooth neighborhood. Bluetooth: OFF Master Accesskey Slave Accesskey Set Device Name Set SecurityStat To set up the device name, please highlight the Set Device Name option from Bluetooth menu and press the LEFT navigation key to enter the device name. Set Device Name Device228 Enter the new device name by using the SCANNDY keypad and press the OK key to save the new device name. NOTE Changing the device name is only possible on SCANNDY units with 19 key keypad. Page 26

28 7.9 SET UP THE SERIAL SCANNDY INTERFACE To view or change the serial interface settings please highlight the Serial option from the system menu and press the LEFT navigation key to enter the serial menu. Run Program Date Time Barcode Bluetooth Serial Display Power Security Reset device In the serial menu you can set up the communication parameters like baud rate, parity, data bits and stop bits. BaudRate Parity None DataBit 8 StopBit 1 To change one of the parameters, please highlight the one you want to change and press the LEFT navigation key to enter the setup * Highlight the parameter you want to change and press the LEFT navigation key to select it. The currently used parameter is marked with *. Please use the same procedure to change parameters for parity, data bits and stop bits. Page 27

29 7.10 SETUP OLED DISPLAY FUNCTIONS To set up display functions please highlight the display option from the system menu and press the LEFT navigation key to enter the display menu. 30 Use the UP navigation key to increase and the DOWN navigation key to reduce the contrast. Once you have finished to adjust, please press the LEFT navigation key to go back to the display menu. Set contrast Set normal Dir Set reverse Dir In order to make it possible for users to read the screen on various usage of the SCANNDY device, the screen directions can be changed. Highlight the Set normal Dir option from the display menu to set the screen direction to standard direction when using the SCANNDY as a hand unit. Read Barcode Highlight the Set reverse Dir option from the display menu to set the screen direction to reverse direction when using the SCANNDY in presentation mode. Page 29

31 7.11 SET UP POWER OPTION In order to save battery power when the device is not used or idle, user can set the SCANNDY unit to automatically power off if idle for specified time. Run Program Date Time Barcode Bluetooth Serial Display Power Security Reset device To set the idle time before power off the unit, please highlight the Power option from system menu and press the LEFT navigation key to enter the power menu. *Always Power On 1 Minute 3 Minutes 5 Minutes 10 Minutes The * marks the current setting. To change the settings, please highlight the time value you want to use and press the LEFT navigation key to select. Page 30

32 7.12 SECURITY SETUP OPTION To prevent the system menu from unauthorized access, you can set up the administration password for system menu access. Run Program Date Time Barcode Bluetooth Serial Display Power Security Reset device To set up the administration password, please highlight the security option from system menu and press the LEFT navigation key to enter the password. Input Password: To change the current password you first have to input the current password. To abort this action please press either the RIGHT navigation key or press the C key. As factory default the password is empty please press the OK key as password! If the password input is correct, you will be prompted to enter the new password. New Password: Page 31

33 Now input the new password by using the SCANNDY key pad. If you want to leave the password empty like in factory default, just press the OK key. Else input the password you want and press the OK key to accept the new password. Here after you will be prompted to reconfirm the new password to make sure that there are no other characters set as password as you really want. Confirm Password Please input again the new password to confirm. You can cancel this operation by pressing the C key at any time. If everything went right on the password confirmation, you will get the message that the password setup was successfully. Password changed Successfully! Press any key! Otherwise you will get the message that there is an error in the confirmation. Password error! Press any key! In this case you need to repeat the password setting from the beginning. CAUTION! Once you set up a system menu password you need this password any time you want to access the system menu. To be able to look up the password please make a note and retain it at a safe place! 34 7.13 RESET DEVICE TO FACTORY DEFAULT If you are not sure what set up options you have changed in your SCANNDY device, you can select the Reset device option from system menu. Run Program Date Time Barcode Bluetooth Serial Display Power Security Reset device To reset the SCANNDY unit to factory default settings, please highlight the Reset device option and press the LEFT navigation key to proceed the system reset. Before the reset procedure will be started you will be noticed on the effect the RESET function has. All data and Setting Will be lost after Reset! Press OK to reset ATTENTION! Please be clear that all settings and all data saved in the device will be lost after you accept the reset function If you are sure you want to reset the device to factory default, please accept the message by pressing the OK key. After few seconds, the device is set back to default. To abort the reset function, please press the C key. Page 33
