2 Page 2 Effective: July 2002 Pow-R-Command 100 System Pow-R-Command 100 Workstation The Pow-R-Command 100 system is a complete network of devices, which allow a facility s electrical use to be efficiently managed. With the Pow-R-Command 100, individual loads can be switched through a network of individual panels, which are influenced by Building Automation Systems, wall switches, time schedules, software, or through telephone commands, etc. See Technical Document TD E for more information on the Pow-R-Command 100 system. What is a Human Machine Interface A Human Machine Interface (HMI) is a general term used to define a device that allows a user to interact with a mechanical or electrical device. Every system that requires some form of human interaction must provide a means for a user to enter commands and instructions. The most commonly used HMI s are computer keyboards, mice or track balls, touch sensitive screens, and telephones. Even devices as simple as a light switch can be used as a HMI. Without the use of such devices, a systems operating functions could not be defined or changed. HMI s & Pow-R-Command 100 Systems All of the capabilities that the Pow-R-Command 100 system offers are essentially unusable if there is no way to program and monitor the actions of the system. Because of this, the Pow-R-Command 100 system was designed to be accessed by the most common HMI s: computers, switches, and telephones. The remaining content of this document will cover the use of computers in a Pow-R-Command 100 system. For information of use of switches see Technical Document TD E. For information of use of telephone control see Technical Document TD E. Supported Types of HMI s When referring only to computers as an interface to the Pow-R-Command 100 system, there are two forms. The first form is a Pow-R-Command 100 workstation, which is commonly a desktop or laptop PC. The second is a maintenance & diagnostic tool, which is commonly a Pocket PC or Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). Desktop & Laptop PC s Desktop and laptop PC s are found in every facility and are used for every function. Desktop and laptop PC s are built with a great deal of capacity including memory, processing power, and I/O functions. The divergence between the two types of PC s is that laptops are much smaller and are designed to be mobile while desktops are not. Supported Brands The Pow-R-Command system can work with any type of IBM compatible PC. As standard, when supplying a desktop or laptop, Eaton s Cutler-Hammer will supply a Dell TM brand PC. However, any other brand of PC can be supplied by Eaton s Cutler- Hammer by specific request. When ordering a PC through Cutler-Hammer, Pow-R- Command 100 software is purchased separately. Pow-R-Command 100 software is typically installed when the Pow-R- Command 100 system is commissioned. However, software may be loaded before the PC is shipped if requested. System Requirements All software for the Pow-R-Command 100 system is designed to run on Microsoft Windows operating systems. Specifically, the Pow-R-Command system is capable of running on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Windows XP Home & Professional. For further information on Pow-R-Command 100 software see Technical Documents TD E, TD , and TD Figure 1: Standard Desktop PC Hardware Requirements All Pow-R-Command 100 software requires at least 500 megabytes of hard drive space, 64 MB of RAM, and a Intel Pentium III processor. The amount of hard drive space will vary depending on the type of Pow-R- Command 100 software used, and the amount, if any, of custom graphic screens. In addition, the PC will require the necessary I/O ports and hardware to support communication with the Pow-R-Command 100 system. The I/O ports may include a serial port capable of connection through a DB9 connector, an internal modem with an RJ11 jack, or an Ethernet card with a RJ45 jack. The type of I/O port will depend on the manner that the Pow-R-Command 100 system is accessed. When a serial port is used, it is recommended that the Com settings for the serial port be set to Com1 or Com3. Use In a Pow-R-Command 100 System In order to change current programming in nodes or add additional nodes to a Pow-R- Command 100 network a desktop or laptop PC must be used. In addition, PC s give the ability to establish custom graphics or allow web access to the network. Without the use of a desktop or laptop PC, users cannot access the full function of the Pow-R-Command 100 system. The resources available on a desktop or laptop PC allows the databases stored on controller to be backed-up onto disk. Furthermore, because the available storage and processing power, databases can be created for use prior to installation of controllers. TD E For More Information visit
3 Page 3 Effective: July 2002 Connection to a Pow-R-Command 100 Network As mentioned there are three forms of I/O connection between the Pow-R-Command 100 network and a desktop or laptop PC. RS-232 Connection Through Serial Port: Each PC can be connected to the Pow-R- Command 100 network through the serial I/O port. The connection is made with a standard cable with a female DB9 connector on both ends. The connection is made to a Pow-R-Command 100 Network Interface Box (NIB), which acts to convert the RS-232 signal from the PC to RS-485 signal that Pow-R-Command 100 communicates on. The serial connection cable can be purchased through Cutler-Hammer. Dial In Connection: At times, there may be a need to dial into a Pow-R-Command 100 system through a modem. In such a case the connection to the Pow-R-Command 100 network would be made through a NIB with an attached modem Ethernet Connection: The Pow-R- Command 100 network can be accessed through a company s Local Area Network (LAN). In order to connect to the Pow-R- Command 100 network through an Ethernet connection a Pow-R-Command 100 Ethernet Server must be used. The Ethernet server works to translate signals from the Ethernet connection into RS-485, which the Pow-R-Command 100 system network uses. For more information on both the Pow-R- Command 100 NIB and the Pow-R-Command 100 Ethernet Server as well as recommended modems, please see Technical Document TD E. Benefits of a Desktop or Laptop PC The benefit of using a desktop or laptop PC is it allows a user to access the full functionality of both the Pow-R-Command 100 network and the Pow-R-Command 100 software. In addition the recourses available on desktop and laptop PC s allow for faster processing and storage of data and databases. Pocket PC s (Personal Digital Assistants) In addition to desktops or laptop PC s, pocket PC s can be used to access the Pow-R- Command 100 network. Pocket PC s are basically a portable PC small enough to fit, as the name implies, into a pocket. Pocket PC s are designed to provide limited computing power in a very mobile form. However, pocket PC s do not have the capability of a desktop or laptop PC, and thus cannot run the same applications. Pocket PC s are also commonly known as a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA). Supported Brands A number of brands of pocket PC s can be used with the Pow-R-Command 100 system. However, in order to function, the pocket PC must run a Microsoft Windows CE operating system. The three most commonly used pocket PC s with the Pow-R-Command 100 network are: Hewlett-Packard Jornada Casio Cassiopeia Compaq ipaq Palm PDA s are not supported as they do not run a Microsoft Windows CE operating system. For more detailed information of each pocket PC, please consult the original manufacturer. Figure 2: Casio Cassiopeia Pocket PC System Requirements The only requirement of a pocket PC used with a Pow-R-Command 100 system is that it must run on a Microsoft Windows CE operating system. All new pocket PC s are capable of operating the Pow-R-Command 100 software for pocket PC s. However, in some circumstances, additional programs such as Microsoft Office may occupy memory and processing power required to run the Pow-R-Command 100 software. If such is the case, some programs may need to be erased or not used when running the Pow-R-Command 100 software. Use In a Pow-R-Command 100 System Pocket PC s used in the Pow-R-Command 100 system are primarily for diagnostic purposes. The software used on a pocket PC is a light version of the software on a desktop or laptop PC. Because of this only limited programming can be done. A Pocket PC can only program the controller that it is physically attached to. It is recommended that only diagnostic and minor maintenance actions be preformed through a Pocket PC. TD E For More Information visit
4 Page 4 Effective: July 2002 Connection to a Pow-R-Command 100 Controller To connect the pocket PC to a Pow-R- Command 100 controller a special cable is required, and can only be purchased through Eaton s Cutler-Hammer. The purpose of this cable is to connect the communication port found on pocket PC s to a Pow-R-Command 100 node. The communication port on the pocket PC transmits a RS-232 signal. The cable used with the pocket PC translates the RS-232 signal to RS-485, which the Pow-R- Command 100 system used as its communication signal standard. The interface cable has a connector on both ends. One end contains a connector specialized for the type of pocket PC being used. The opposite end contains a connector that is designed to connect to the RS-485 test port found on all Pow-R- Command 100 controllers. For more information on these connections see Technical Documents TD E, TD E, TD E, & TD for Switch Override Controllers, Telephone Override Controllers, Pow-R- Command 100 Panelboards, and Network Interface Boxes respectively. Pocket PC s can be purchased directly through Cutler-Hammer when the Pow-R- Command 100 system is ordered. When purchased through Cutler-Hammer, the pocket PC comes complete with software and the proper cable to access the Pow-R- Command 100 network and associated nodes. Use With a Desktop or Laptop PC Pocket PC s are designed to be used in conjunction with either a desktop or laptop PC. This is done by a synchronization process between the desktop or laptop PC and the pocket PC. The synchronization is completed through a cable or infrared connection. Typically, pocket PC s are shipped complete with a base stand used to create a cable link between the I/O port on the pocket PC to the USB port on a desktop or laptop PC. In addition, the base stand provides a charging port for the rechargeable batteries in the pocket PC. Custom Screens On Pocket PC s Eaton s Cutler-Hammer offers the ability to produce customizes graphic screens for use on Pocket PC s. Use of these custom graphic screens can be a significantly useful tool for facility personnel. The use of custom graphic screens allows facility personnel to interact with their environment through rich graphic displays. Each custom graphic screen created for Pocket PC s is sold separately. The number of possible custom graphic screens stored on a Pocket PC will depend greatly on system recourses available. Benefits of a Pocket PC Pocket PC s offer the capability to monitor the individual nodes on the Pow-R-Command 100 network at the devices themselves. This can be a great benefit when preforming maintenance and diagnostic functions on the system. Use of a Pocket PC provides the following benefits: Adding controllers to the network without requiring close proximity to the Pow-R- Command 100 Workstation. Ability to exercise switching devices to verify visual cues while within view of the switching device. Ability to perform local overrides during service or troubleshooting the local controller. Making simple changes to the controller s database without having to return to the Pow-R-Command 100 Workstation. Custom views and controls for runtime operations. Portability that desktop and laptop PC s cannot offer. TD E For More Information visit
