3 Pow-R-Command 2000 General Overview In businesses of all types, there are numerous variables that significantly influence profitability. Among these variables are: electrical consumption, construction time and the ease with which employees use the facility. Eaton s Cutler-Hammer Pow-R-Command 2000 system can have a positive impact on all of these elements. Energy Costs Among the various factors that contribute to total energy costs are: the times that energy is used and the amount of energy used at any point in time. The Pow-R-Command 2000 can help control both of these. With integral time control and the ability to stagger the start time of groups of devices, the Pow-R-Command 2000 system can help a facility manage its electrical consumption. Furthermore, a Pow-R-Command 2000 system can be integrated with a metering system to monitor and control electrical use. Reduced Construction Time and Space In each Pow-R-Command 2000 panelboard are revolutionary devices known as Smart Breakers. Eaton s Smart Breaker combines the interrupting ability of a standard branch circuit breaker with a remote switching ability. Smart Breakers mount in any standard Cutler- Hammer brand panelboard, and can be intermingled with standard branch circuit breakers. Because no additional structures are needed to mount the Smart Breaker, the extra material and labor from the contactor or relay cabinets are eliminated. Lighting Control With No Additional Structures The Pow-R-Command 2000 controller and associated Smart Breakers mount directly into a standard Cutler-Hammer brand panelboard. Such panelboards would be required in a facility even if no lighting control is installed. As a result of this, the Pow-R-Command 2000 system and all of its abilities can be installed in the same structures that would normally be required. Lighting Control With No Additional Labor When using contactors or relays to control lighting, there are four basic elements that need to be integrated into a circuit. This includes a standard branch circuit breaker mounted in a panelboard, a relay or contactor mounted in a separate cabinet, a controller mounted in a cabinet, and the lighting loads. On the job site, the contractor would need to install pipe and wire from the controller and branch circuit breaker to the contactor or relay and then to the lighting load. Since the controller, branch device and remote controlled switching device are all located in one Pow-R-Command 2000 structure, the contractor only needs to pipe and wire from the Pow-R-Command 2000 panelboard to the lighting load. Product Support and Technical Assistance Eaton has 17 locations that are fully capable of manufacturing and supporting the Pow-R-Command 2000 product. Technical and application engineering services are available by calling In addition to technical support, field study and coordination of electrical and lighting control systems is available through Eaton Engineering Services. 4 Network Philosophy The Pow-R-Command 2000 system is designed to provide the user with the greatest flexibility for interfacing with it. The Pow-R- Command 2000 system cleanly integrates into a number of larger systems both through device level and system level communication or can stand alone as a complete networked control system. Variable Protocol: Dependent on Network Access Device Network Access Device System Nodes General The Pow-R-Command 2000 system basically consists of five different types of devices. Each of these nodes is described briefly here and given more detail in the following pages. Control Nodes: Control nodes are assigned the duty of controlling switching devices, as well as creating groups and time schedules. Control nodes include the Universal System Controller, Switch Override Controller and Telephone Override Controller. All of these controllers communicate on the Pow-R-Command 2000 network. The Pow-R-Command Switch Override Controller is used to allow additional switch inputs (e.g., wall switches) to be integrated into the Pow-R-Command 2000 network. The Pow-R-Command Telephone Override Controller, as the name implies, allows the facility s telephone system to be integrated into the Pow-R-Command 2000 network. The Pow-R-Command I/O Application Specific Controller is designed for remote mounting, and can bring Pow-R-Command 2000 functionality to otherwise dissimilar equipment and systems. For more information on the PRC SOC and PRC TOC, and the Application Specific Controller see Technical Documents TD E, TD E and TD E. Network Access Devices: Network Access Devices are the head of the Pow-R-Command 2000 network. Pow-R-Command 2000 Network Access Devices provide entrance to the Pow-R-Command 2000 network and commonly act as a master controller. For complete information on the Pow-R-Command 2000 Network Protocols and Access Devices, see Technical Document TD E. Operator and User Workstations: The Pow-R-Command 2000 system is programmed through software. In order to make use of the ability of the Pow-R-Command 2000 software packages, it is necessary to use a computer. This includes desktop PCs, laptop PCs and Pocket PCs. For more information on PC use with the Pow-R-Command 2000 system, please see Technical Document TD E. Software: In addition to completing the system setup through the Pow-R-Command 2000 web interface mentioned earlier, all functions of the Pow-R-Command 2000 system can also be set through software installed on a personal computer with a connection to one of our Network Access Devices. To provide the greatest amount of flexibility in software control, there are five separate levels of Pow-R-Command 2000 software that are sold separately. These five levels are discussed further in this document. This software is necessary in order to execute network commands between panelboards (i.e., Peer to Peer communication between Pow-R-Command 2000 panelboards). Additional Protocols: Eaton understands that in some facilities it will be necessary to integrate the Pow-R-Command 2000 system into your Building Automation System (BAS). This is why we offer a Pow-R-Command 2000 system that can communicate both TCP/IP and BACnet/IP: The Pow-R-Command 2000B. No extra hardware is needed. Also, the Pow-R-Command 2000 can communicate SOAP/ XML protocol through the Pow-R-Command 2000 SOAP/XML Server. 5 Network Access Devices Network Access Devices are only needed when using RS-485 as your communication interface to network each Pow-R-Command 2000 panelboard. Network access devices are not needed when using TCP/IP as your networking protocol. Network access devices are essentially the starting points for the Pow-R-Command 2000 system. Each Network Access Device acts to accomplish several functions, including: protocol exchange, system synchronization, establishing the network and accessing the network. Protocol Exchange: The Pow-R-Command 2000 network uses RS-485 to communicate across nodes. In order for a device such as a PC, which operates on RS-232, to communicate with the network, a translation must take place. In addition to RS-232, Network Access Devices are available for translation to TCP/IP for Ethernet communication. System Synchronization: Each node on the Pow-R-Command 2000 network contains a database. This database contains essential operating information, as well as programmed functions. Likewise, each Network Access Device contains a database. The database in the Network Access Device acts as a global database. Functions and programs that effect the entire network are stored on the Network Access Device. In addition, the Network Access Device contains the master clock. Each day, all nodes on the Pow-R-Command 2000 network access the Network Access Device to synchronize all clocks on the network. Establishing the Network: The Network Access Device is used as the starting point of the Pow-R-Command 2000 network. Each network can consist of 120 nodes. Under circumstances where more than 120 Pow-R-Command 2000 nodes are necessary in a facility, multiple Network Access Devices are used. Each Network Access Device acts as the head of the Pow-R-Command 2000 network that it is attached to. Access to the Network: The Network Access Device is used to provide users access, through software, to the network. This is done through PCs. The network can be remotely accessed through a modem or Ethernet. Network Access Device Selection The Pow-R-Command 2000 system has several types of network access devices available to ensure the greatest amount of flexibility of use. The three most common Pow-R-Command 2000 network access devices are described in the following. For further information on Pow-R-Command 2000 Network Access Devices, see Technical Document TD E. Unitary Modem Interface: Translates RS-485 to RS-232 and is commonly used for remote access, through a modem, to an unmanned Pow-R-Command 2000 system. Network Interface Box: Like the Unitary Modem Interface, the Network Interface Box translates RS-485 to RS-232. The Network Interface Box is mounted adjacent to a PC, and is used in facilities with manned Pow-R-Command 2000 systems. Ethernet Server: The Ethernet Server translates RS-485 to TCP/IP. The Ethernet Server allows the Pow-R-Command 2000 network to be accessed through an Ethernet connection. Pow-R-Command 2000 RS-485 Network Telephone Modem Ethernet Server FIGURE 4. 6 Pow-R-Command System Software All of the power and ability of the Pow-R-Command 2000 system is only achieved through use of software. Pow-R-Command 2000 software allows a facility to set schedules, create groups, track use and communicate with other software programs. Pow-R-Command 2000 Software Levels To make sure that a facility has only what they really need to run their Pow-R-Command 2000 system, primary levels of software have been created. These levels of software are: Lighting Optimization Software: Allows for basic setup of Pow-R-Command 2000 network and all devices attached to it. Please see Technical Document TD E for more information. Custom Graphics and Data Logging: The Pow-R-Command Custom Graphics and Data Logging software allows users to collect, store and trend system information such as run-time cycles. In addition, the Custom Graphics and Data Logging software package allows custom screens to be built into the Pow-R-Command 2000 system giving users a more comfortable environment to work in. Please see Technical Data TD E for more information. Web Server Software: Allows custom screens, trended/logged data to be viewed over Internet Browser such as Microsoft Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. For more information on the Pow-R-Command 2000 Web Server Software, see Technical Document TD E. OPC Server Software: OPC Software uses industry standard protocols to facilitate in exchange of information between separate software packages. For more information on the Pow-R-Command 2000 OPC Server Software, please see Technical Document TD E. In addition to the previously listed Pow-R-Command 2000 software packages, a light version of the Pow-R-Command 2000 Lighting Optimization Software has been created for use on Pocket PCs. This gives users the ability to perform basic diagnostic and maintenance to individual controllers. For more information on use of Pocket PCs with a Pow-R-Command 2000 system, please see Technical Document TD E. The Pow-R-Command 2000 USC controller also supports an optional local LCD programming device. This allows a local operator functions for control and status directly. The LCD device also provides the ability to program changes to load descriptions, load groups and schedules. FIGURE 5. MISCELLANEOUS SCREEN VIEWS OF POW-R-COMMAND 2000 LIGHTING OPTIMIZATION Pow-R-Command 2000 Workstation Requirements All levels of Pow-R-Command 2000 software require the following minimum requirements for operation. In addition, the Web Server Software, as the name implies, must be mounted on a PC used as a server. IBM compatible PC. Intel Pentium 90 MHz processor or better. Microsoft Windows 95B, 98 Second Edition, 2000, 2000 Professional, XP Home, or XP Professional. At Least 32 MB RAM, and a hard drive with at least 40 MB of free space. Additional space may be necessary depending on presence and number of custom graphic screens and amount of trended data. Hayes compatible modem (optional). SVGA monitor. 7 Protocol Exchange Controllers The Pow-R-Command 2000 system is designed to provide the user with the greatest flexibility for interfacing with it. In most circumstances, the Pow-R-Command system uses an RS-485 protocol and communication standard to send and receive commands between control devices. In some cases, the Pow-R-Command 2000 network must be able to integrate, through software communication, into larger systems. These larger systems are commonly titled Building Automation Systems (BAS). Currently, the Pow-R-Command 2000 system can communicate SOAP/XML and BACnet Protocols. For more information on integration using BACnet, see Technical Document TD E. Native Controllers vs. Servers Making a distinction between integrating Pow-R-Command 2000 systems into other systems, there are two methods that need to be noted. These two methods are native controllers and server devices. When a controller is native it only speaks the language of the system it is in. For instance, the controllers used in a standard Pow-R-Command 2000 system are native to Pow-R-Command 2000; all these devices speak to is other native Pow-R-Command 2000 devices. At times, circumstances may dictate that native controllers cannot be used. This includes instances where native products with specific functions do not exist. In cases such as this, a server device is used to translate data between the two systems. Depending on the application of the Pow-R-Command 2000 system, both methods may be used. HVAC System Fire/Emergency System Security/Access Control System Other Mechanical Control System Building Automation System: BACnet/IP FIGURE 6. NATIVE BACNET/IP POW-R-COMMAND 2000B SYSTEM ON A BACNET/IP NETWORK Pow-R-Command 2000 Native Controllers Eaton currently offers three native controllers for use in Pow-R- Command 2000 panelboards, relay cabinets, control cabinet and column type panelboards. These native controllers only speak the appropriate language and adhere to the appropriate signal standard. Pow-R-Command 2000 native controllers include: Standard Pow-R-Command 2000 Controller, implementing TCP/IP and RS-485 Protocols. Pow-R-Command 2000B Controller, implementing TCP/IP, BACnet/IP and RS-485 Protocols. Pow-R-Command 2000 Server Devices Server devices act, as the name implies, to serve commands sent from the requesting system. A SOAP/XML server has been designed for use with the Pow-R-Command The Pow-R-Command 2000 SOAP/XML server allows for communication based on SOAP/XML standards. Because of its complexity, the Pow-R-Command 2000 SOAP/XML server has a technical document devoted solely to it. For more information on the Pow-R-Command 2000 SOAP/XML server, please see Technical Document TD E. EATON CORPORATION Cutler-Hammer Pow-R-Command 2000 System Overview Technical Data TD E Copyright

8 Pow-R-Command 2000 Network The backbone of the Pow-R-Command 2000 system is the network that runs between each control device. In native Pow-R-Command 2000 systems, the network consists of an RS-485 signal on a twisted shielded pair network cable. This network allows for commands and data to be sent from control node to control node, and from control node to workstation. In the case of a standard Pow-R-Command 2000 system, the integrity of the network is not dependent on the operation of the devices connected to it. The network maintains continuity even if a controller for another network device fails. This is in opposition to systems that use a Master-Slave type relationship, where one control node connects to the network and further control nodes connect to it. If the master control node fails, network communication to the slave control nodes also fails. When using standard Pow-R-Command 2000 control nodes, each controller has on-board memory, battery backup and processing power. Each Pow-R-Command 2000 panelboard has the ability to operate in a stand-alone environment. The programming for the operation of each Pow-R-Command 2000 can be stored and processed directly on its own memory. If this was not the case, all commands would have to be sent from a central or master controller. Storing the programming information within each Pow-R-Command 2000 helps to ensure that any network failures do not effect the operation of each individual Pow-R-Command 2000 panelboard. Pow-R-Command 2000 Network Specifications RS-485 is a standardized serial communication interface. As such, standards have been created for its use, and apply to the Pow-R- Command 2000 system. The following standards pertain only to Pow-R-Command 2000 System that is implementing the RS-485 Protocol: Maximum network distance 4,000 feet (1,219.2 m) without use of repeater. Maximum number of nodes: 120. Twisted shielded network cable: BELDEN 3105A, 300 V (Preferred) BELDEN 82841, 300 V, Plenum (Preferred) BELDEN 9841, 300 V BELDEN 89841, 300 V BELDEN 3074F, 600 V (for Custom Applications) For more information on the Pow-R-Command 2000 network, see Technical Document TD E. Pow-R-Command 2000 Network Summary The Pow-R-Command 2000 system offers unmeasured network scalability. As mentioned, each Pow-R-Command 2000 has a built-in web server. This means each Pow-R-Command 2000 panelboard and subnetwork with up to three expansion panelboards could be stand-alone and can be controlled, monitored and programmed through a standard web browser. No additional software, communication wiring or communication devices are needed. In addition to this cutting-edge feature, each Pow-R-Command 2000 panelboard can be networked together on an RS-485 network and communicate back to a network access device or parent node. This will allow each Pow-R-Command 2000 (including its subnetwork) to communicate Peer-to-Peer with one another. Each Pow-R-Command 2000 can now command Smart Breakers in any one of its peer s panelboards anywhere in the facility. With this Peer-to-Peer network, you have the ability of adding up to 120 Pow-R-Command 2000 panelboards each with up to three expansion panelboards. That s a total of up to 360 panelboards and up to 15,120 Smart Breakers. FIGURE 7.
