4 Unit 4 Website Development (10 Credits) Introduction The worldwide web has given rise to a new medium of communication. Websites can allow us to walk into a world with very few boundaries. We can find MP3 files and download them with ease. Our digital images can be sent to relatives overseas in seconds. We can go shopping without leaving our homes and source the very best prices with the click of a mouse button. Essential to developing the worldwide web are the people who design effective documents that can be read by a web browser. Web designers have the fascinating task of taking text, images, video and other resources and crafting them into high quality documents for broadcasting across the world via the internet. Their brief is to produce attractive and informative sites that are accessible to everyone. This includes users with disabilities, where, for example, features can allow speech synthesisers to read out pages for blind users. In this unit learners see the potential of the web and will develop a skill set which will be highly valued by industry and commerce as well as being a useful personal skill for leisure pursuits. Web design is a skill that is becoming more and more popular as the worldwide web expands and as companies see the advantage of using browser technology for their company intranets. The unit provides a firm grounding in the concepts of web design which will help learners to progress to employment or to another educational course and to become valued employees with the key skills needed in their chosen employment. Aims On completion of this unit you should be able to: 1 Know web architecture and components 2 Understand how websites can be used by organisations 3 Be able to design website components 4 Be able to create website components. The Project Brief You have recently been employed as an ICT technician at Fakenham High School and College, you will join a team of another two ICT technicians. Your predominate role is to ensure that the institution is e-learning and communication ready.
5 Tasks Complete all of the following tasks in order, checking with your teacher as you do, to complete this assignment: In order to carry out the work of e-learning you have identified equipment you need to be purchase. The head ICT technician, before he makes such a purchase, has asked you to produce a booklet about the purpose(s) of the hardware and software components you require. The hardware and software components you require are as follows: 1a) Web server Proxy server Router Web Browser medium software such as Microsoft Outlook P1 9 th November 1b) Add to the booklet the concept of web architecture i) What are ISP s do we need to subscribe to an ISP ii) What does the term web hosting mean and does this effect us. iii) What is domain structure iv) Do we need a domain name and how do we register a domain name v) What does the world wide web mean P2 16 th November The ICT technician is pleased with the booklet you have produced but is still unsure why the school would need a website. 2a) Produce a powerpoint presentation with detailed notes, within the notes section of the presentation, which explains the purpose of websites for different organisation. As well as explaining this in general terms you should consider the main functions of websites, including the latest developments in online practices. Descriptions of live business websites may be used to explore the different uses of websites in organisations. You should explain how organisations use websites and intranets to improve productivity, efficiency and gain revenue. Uses of websites: customer-facing eg marketing, online product catalogue, business information; internal eg intranets, information repositories, training facilities P3 23 th November
6 3) You have, at last, managed to persuade the ICT technician and the school governors that a website for Fakenham High School and College is essential. You have been asked to produce website designs for the organisation. They have identified 4 pages for you to produce: i) Front page Welcome message, latest news ii) Gallery iii) Parents Blog Page iv) Contacts information page. Eg. Address, telephone number, etc v) PDF page of newsletters, options booklets etc. all of which can be downloaded. 3a) Produce a story board as well as sample designs of all the web pages to present to the ICT technician next week.
