3 GENESIS 2 Topology for ANSYS Mechanical 2.1 VR&D provides Topology Optimization within ANSYS WorkBench GENESIS Topology for ANSYS Mechanical (GTAM) is an integrated extension that adds topology optimization to the ANSYS environment. Designers benefit by automatically generating innovative designs in a reliable, robust, and easy-to-use interface. Supports different analysis systems and multiple loading conditions Several built-in responses for objectives and constraints such as strain energies, frequencies, mass, displacement, etc. Several built-in manufacturing constraints for the designable region such as symmetries, casting, extrusion, etc. Seamless integration with ANSYS: No knowledge of the GENESIS data format is needed GTAM Extension may be added to WorkBench Versions 14.5 or 15.0 Click here for more information on GTAM. The ANSYS North American Sales Conference was held on January 20-23, 2014 at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Pennsylvania. VR&D s presence helped introduce GTAM to the ANSYS community.

5 3 VR&D Workshops Free Optimization Workshops: March 13th and March 14th, 2014 Do not miss the opportunity to participate in our upcoming one-day workshops. We are offering two sessions: Multidisciplinary Optimization Workshop and Structural Optimization Workshop. This offer is available to anyone interested in learning these subjects or using our software. The workshops are free of charge, so don't miss out on this unique opportunity. Space is limited so if you are interested sign up now by sending an to or calling x101. VR&D offers one-day workshops, and training classes on optimization and related topics. The workshops are designed to give attendees a brief overview of the capabilities of our software, teach them optimization concepts, and help them use our software in solving their problems. The workshops are offered at our Novi MI office throughout the year. We currently offer workshops and training classes on the following topics: Structural Optimization (GENESIS and Design Studio) This workshop is designed to demonstrate the ease of running optimization using Design Studio and GENESIS. The workshop covers topology, sizing, shape, topography, topometry, and freeform optimization problems. Hands-on exercises will be solved by the attendees. General Optimization (VisualDOC) This workshop is designed to highlight how VisualDOC can be used to add design optimization capabilities to an existing analysis. An overview of the features present in the software along with several analysis integration techniques is presented. Attendees will have the chance to solve example problems for better understanding. 6 Workshops Continued from previous page Freeform and Composite Optimization This workshop will provide an in-depth look at freeform and composite optimization using GENESIS and Design Studio. In this workshop we will look at the capabilities of GENESIS to optimize laminated composites, explore Freeform Optimization, and a new shape optimization capability. This special shape optimization capability allows the user to find the best location and shape of rib patterns that stiffen solid structures. It can also be used to find the best location of grids in any type of structure. Shape Optimization This workshop provides an in-depth look at shape, topography, and freeform optimization using GENESIS and Design Studio. In this workshop, we will look at the basics of shape optimization. It also goes through Topography optimization and explores Freeform Optimization, a new shape optimization capability. This special shape optimization capability allows the user to find the best location and shape of rib patterns that stiffen solid structures. It can also be used to find the best location of grids in any type of structure. Composite and Frequency Response Optimization This workshop provides an in-depth look at optimization using frequency response analysis using GENESIS and Design Studio. The beta method, used for minimizing the maximum value, is used to optimize based on frequency response. In this workshop we will also look at the capabilities of GENESIS to optimize laminated composites. Optimization for layer thickness, angles, and shape are also covered. Non-Linear Response Optimization This workshop provides an in-depth look at optimization of non-linear responses using GENESIS and Design Studio. The Equivalent Static Loads (ESL) method is briefly presented. The ESLDYNA interface, which uses LS-DYNA to solve the nonlinear analysis and GENESIS to perform the optimization, is explained. In this workshop, we will look at the different optimization capabilities of GENESIS. We will also look at a plugin to Design Studio that serves as a graphical interface to setup and run the ESLDYNA interface. 8 5 Latest Software Releases 5.1 GENESIS 13.0 (Jan 2014) GENESIS 13.0 and its companion Design Studio for GENESIS 13.0 have been released on January 16, GENESIS 13.0 includes several major and minor changes aimed at improving the user-interface, feature set, and performance as compared to version Nonlinear Contact Analysis and Optimization: Nonlinear surface-to-surface contact conditions can now be included in static analysis loadcases. Contact force, pressure, and clearance results can be printed in the output file or output to punch and/or output2 post-processing files for visualization in Design Studio for GENESIS. Optimization can be performed using contact pressure and clearance as either constraints or objectives. Combining Topology Optimization with Shape/Sizing Optimization: Optimization problems can now have both topology designable regions and parametric shape/sizing/topography/topometry designed entities at the same time. In addition, all response types can be used in any optimization problem setup. Initial Design Final Design Frequency Response Data Enhancements: Enforced motion (displacement, velocity, acceleration) can now be specified by referencing SPCD from RLOAD1/2 entries. New DLOAD bulk data entry allows easy linear combination of RLOAD1/2/3 entries. Frequency-dependent stiffness and damping properties can be specified for bushing elements with the new PBUSHT bulk data entry. Optimization Enhancements: A new option for topometry coarsening is available. The method divided the topometry region into a regular array based on given cell dimensions, and often results in more uniform design patches. Extended topology regions now allow topology fabrication constraints to be enforced across multiple element properties. Continued on next page

GENESIS 13.0 (Jan 2014) Improvements in Laminated Composite Analysis: Property definitions with global ply IDs may now be defined using the PCOMPG bulk data entry. Several new response types are now available: 1) Stress and strain components of individual composite layers; 2) Total composite thickness of the laminate; 3) Individual layer thicknesses. Output Improvements: New OPRINT solution control command allows control over which design cycles will produce optimization post-processing files. Multiple post-processing formats can now be selected with the POST executive control command. Output2 format files are now smaller and take less time to produce. Shape post-processing file now skips grids with zero shape change, which will frequently result in a smaller file. For more information, please visit our GENESIS product page 5.2 Design Studio for GENESIS 13.0 (Jan 2014) GENESIS 13.0 Compatibility: Enhanced to handle all the new capabilities of GENESIS v13.0 Active Trail Warning: A warning dialog will pop up if the user tries to export data or run GENESIS while there is an unfinished trail Design pre-processing Enhancements: Quick sizing setup trail for laminated composites, User has the option to select groups that are designed by a design variable and vice versa Analysis Enhancements: Creation of pressure loading on solid faces is supported Display Enhancements: Domains are drawn in a new style in the Viewport to emphasize the control grids, Bush elements are now drawn with a line to indicate the connection, User has option to label or not label grids during element identification Post-processing Improvements: In the color plots, out-of-bound values can be given special colors, Grid Stress tensor components can be plotted, Global ply IDs can be specified to plot composite layer results For more information, please visit our Design Studio for GENESIS product page

10 6 Optimised Product Engineering Conference 2013 To celebrate their 10th anniversary, our distributor in the UK, GRM Consulting held its first conference event. This conference provided attendees with the opportunity to listen to customer experiences and learn current and upcoming features of software distributed or developed by GRM and VR&D. The event considered both software and consulting perspectives of design optimization, demonstrating their practical applications. Our President and COO, Mr. Juan Pablo Leiva, gave an invited presentation entitled "GENESIS Structural Optimization; Current and Upcoming Key Features". This presentation and others presented at this conference can be found in the following link: At the event VR&D gave a plaque to Mr. Martin Gambling to show our appreciation and to celebrate his outstanding contributions as distributor of VR&D software.
