King Edward VI Five Ways School GEOGRAPHY Context: In the new OCR A GCSE there is a unit A673 (Similarities and differences)unit that includes an investigation into two contrasting areas one in the UK and one elsewhere. We have chosen to look at the Babati region of Tanzania a region that the school has links with and the students own area of Birmingham. Part of this unit allows for an investigation in to sustainability of an area as well as how you would improve the area. This task allows for pupils to investigate their own area using GIS software and to improve the area as well as to develop mapping skills. A major part of the unit looks at investigating your own place and how it is currently and how it can be changed in the future. These are a few of the enquiry questions: What constitutes your place? What are the major issues affecting your place? What changes might take place in the future? What are the positive and negative impacts? (accessed 01/02/10) SUSTAINABILTY AND THE POSSIBLE FUTURES FOR YOUR LOCAL AREA Your task is to redesign your local area to make it more sustainable urban (or rural) area and enact Local Agenda 21. You should aim to improve life for people in the area. You must produce an annotated overlay map and a brief supporting report to present and justify your design. THE MAP Demonstrate your ideas by producing a series of maps to show the key changes you would make. Your maps should show how sustainable your area is to start with. It may show the level of indices of multiple deprivations as an overlay to show unseen or underlying issues. You will show the changes that you would make You may show these things by using shading and symbols. The map must be annotated to describe and briefly justify the changes you propose.

This map can be produced by using a number of GIS packages as well as traditional methods. This example will be using ESRI s DigitalWorlds v3 software, an educational GIS software based upon ESRI s Arcview software. In this project the pupils will learn the following skills Using map layers o o o Ordnance Survey map data Aerial photography Census data such as population and indices of multiple deprivation Inserting layers of information Using a transparency tool with the layers of information Drawing polygons, lines, points of information including selecting appropriate symbols Map layout Creating a map project Amending a map with changes The following pages are instructions on how to use the DigitalWorlds software with this my place investigation.

Local place investigation. To open Digital Worlds go to Programs then Geography then click on Digital Worlds v3. A window will open Tool bar Tool bar Map panel Table of contents Go to File open project and select local area study In the table of contents a number of layers will appear: Map Pilot resources, Getmapping resources and census data Each of these resources will be un-ticked. If you tick the Map Pilot resources an Ordnance survey map of Bartley Green will appear. If you tick the Getmapping resources an aerial photograph of Bartley Green will appear.

The 3 layers in the key appear with the top layer at the top of the list and the layers underneath the top layer below. Above the top layer is Getmapping with the OS map underneath it. You can see that the OS map is still there below by using the swiper tool. This tool allows you to swipe away the top layer to reveal what s underneath. First you need to state in this box that the getmapping is the top layer and this is the layer you are going to pull away. You do this by clicking of the arrow to reveal a drop down menu Then click on the swiper button and scroll down on your map to reveal the map beneath.

Another way of revealing what is beneath the top layer is by using the transparency tool this tool you select the top layer to be transparent then click on the button and select how transparent you want the top layer to be this can be from 0-100%.. With In the example below the top layer (aerial photograph) has been made transparent to reveal the underlying layer of the OS map. Using this tool you can compare two different layers at the same time. For example old and new land use can be highlighted.

You can also still use the swiper tool when using the transparency tool.

MAPPING CHANGES INSTRUCTIONS To mark the changes between years on the map/aerial photo this software allows you to draw a layer(s) on top of the layers you can see. This is done by creating a new map (shp file). This is done by clicking on map tools on the top tool bar then clicking Create new map. A dialogue box will appear. In this box it will give you the option of Type of shape. This can be either a point, a line or a polygon. If we want to show where the school is currently we would use a polygon to the show the area so click polygon. We then have to give it a name and save it in a location in our computer area. Click browse to do this. Another dialogue box will open. Here Save it in your area and give it the same name in the Field name box then click save.

In the project manager part of the DW page a new layer will appear at the top of the list. To use this layer click on the draw tool on the top tool bar then use your mouse to click the area, double click to finish and the area you have drawn will appear. To change the style of the red polygon click on the label and a dialogue box named symbol selector will appear. Here you can change the appearance to make it easier to view the different layers below it. You can change the fill colour, outline colour and the style Click ok and the area you previously coloured in red automatically is now a cross hatched area.

If you want to add a line or a point you carry out the same procedure as for a polygon. There is a wide range of symbols that can be used to show point information. With lines click the location you want the line then double click when you are finished. With both lines and points When adding a layer when you have 2 added layers when you click the drawing tool will appear at the bottom of the map along with a prompt box asking about a tool bar target. Click the arrow to get the drop down menu of which drawing layer you are editing, drawing.

Once you have created all your own layers you can save them by clicking button on the bottom tool bar. the save edits Please save your project as a new project in your own area. Additional layers such as census data can be added such as the indices of multiple deprivation to show whether areas have particular inequalities such as environment or crime data.

Additional ideas: Pupils could include the area of green area before and after changes e.g. measuring change in area using measuring tool The buffer tool could be used to look at nearness to objects e.g. green space, access to facilities i.e. access to recycling, distance to nearest bus route The context of your area within a larger area e.g. Birmingham After plotting the current situation think about the how you are going to improve the situation in your local area. These ideas are going to be written up in the report below before you plot the changes on to the original map produced.

THE REPORT Write a word report to support and fully justify your proposals. You should aim to develop the points you made in the annotations in more detail (but don t simply repeat). For each proposed change you must: Explain why you chose it for this area. Explain why it is sustainable (why its supports Local Agenda 21) Describe how it would benefit people and the environment in the area. Show how it is linked to the other ideas, they should be integrated. Suggest how the ideas might influence the future of the area. You may tabulate the report on A4 paper to save time and use words efficiently. For example Recommended change 1 Reasons why chosen for this area Reasons why it is sustainable and why its support LA21 Way in which it would benefit people and the Environment Link to other ideas( annotated arrows?) 2 3
