2 Visual Identity Standards Presentations Introduction Introduction Template options Type specifications Tips for building effective presentations To convey a consistent and professional image of the university, all faculties, departments and offices are encouraged to use the presentation templates presented in these standards. There is a selection of templates that can be downloaded at ucalgary.ca/brand. These templates should only be used by those connected directly to the university and to deliver material relevant to university-originating activities. They should not be used by contractors or vendors pitching or presenting reports to the university, nor should they be provided to students for their project work. They should also not be used for personal purposes. Important For questions about layout, colours, and/or use of the university logo, to obtain high-resolution electronic files, or to discuss additional stationery requirements, please contact University Relations Marketing at brand@ucalgary.ca.

6 12.03 Type specifications 6 The recommended system typeface for content on slides is Calibri, a clean sans serif font that is highly legible and designed to work well in digital spaces. Narrow fonts (such as Arial Narrow) or serif fonts (such as Times New Roman, with fussy edges to each letter) are not recommended again, for optimal legibility. Each template pre-sets the type size for optimal readability at each bullet level. Your audience must be able to read the type from a distance. A common rule of thumb is that a 1 /2.5 cm letter is readable from 10 feet/3 metres, a 2 /5 cm letter is readable from 20 feet/6 metres, and a 3 /7.6 cm letter is readable from 30 feet/9 metres. These templates have pre-set type colour specifications that embrace the principles of accessibility for the maximum number of users by delivering high contrast between background colour and text colour. Avoid applying colours to type over a coloured background not only does this dramatically diminish legibility, but it also renders your slides much less user-friendly by reducing the contrast between type and background.

7 12.04 Tips for building effective presentations 7 No matter how you deliver your presentation (PowerPoint, Keynote, Beamer, Prezzi, etc.), the best way to communicate your material is to tell a cohesive story. The goal is have the audience to listen to your story, rather than read the screen. Presentation slides should provide supplementary information, like key messages, simple graphs or compelling imagery, but should not be the main source of information. If all of the information is already on the screen, then there s no need to read it or talk about each message. Keep text simple by using bullet points or short sentences. Use bullets or short sentences, and try to keep each to one line without text wrapping. Art and graphics can help tell a story, but use them sparingly rather than in a complex montage. Be aware of copyright restrictions on images that you use. When using imagery, keep your presentation file-size manageable by using files optimized for digital display rather than enormous print-resolution files. Make labels for charts and graphs understandable. Use only enough text to make label elements in a chart or graph comprehensible. Check spelling and grammar, remembering that as a Canadian university, our default is Canadian spelling.
