Module Eight Experiencing the joys of Adobe Photoshop, part 2 due by 5pm on Saturday, March 26 For the moment, let us say that ugly design, as opposed to classical design... is the layering of unharmonious graphic forms in a way that results in confusing messages (Heller, / ). The secret of ugliness consists not in irregularity, but in being uninteresting (Ralph Waldo Emerson). In this second installment of our Joys of Photoshop modules, we ll continue eploring this industry-standard, graphicdesign application used to create and manipulate images. Photoshop may very well be a document designer s best friend. It s an incredibly powerful application that allows you to make your design dreams a reality if you know how to use it, and use it well. MODULE REQUIREMENTS You ll complete 3 images with at least 3 layers in this activity using any of the skills you ve learned from the last module together with any of the skills described below and moves of your own. In addition to these, you ll have brief word introductions with each image describing what moves your showing and using any terms of art from class we ve learned so far. Activities get harder across this module; if you re a Photoshop beginner, you might want to stick with the first few. If you re more advanced, jump to the later activities. The activities are develop upon the different tools in and functions of Photoshop. SAVING YOUR FILES For each of the tasks below, you will create an image file that you import into ppt or word or IDD (the later require you to print or save to.pdf). In Photoshop, there are many different options for saving files (e.g., PICT, TIFF, GIF, PSD). ACTIVITY 1: MAKING PICTURES WITH WORDS 1. Choose a word you want to illustrate (e.g., adventurous, arrogant, calm, classy, crazy, demented, frail, innocent, loud, organized, playful, silly, vain). Pick a word that you have a strong response to, and that creates corresponding mental images. (For example, hot might conjure up an image of flames and fire.) 2. Find on the web and save an image that best suits the word you ve chosen. 3. Choose a font face that best suits the word you ve chosen and the image you ve chosen to illustrate that word. NOTE For this activity, a heavy, bold, or slab font face will work best.

4. Open the image in Photoshop. 5. Once the image is open, click and hold on the Text tool button on your toolbar. Drag down and select the Horizontal Type Mask Tool (the T with the dashes around it). 6. Then, in the Text tool submenu, select the font face and the font size you wish to use. 7. Click in the image. The color of the image should change don t freak out, this is supposed to happen. Type in your word. As you type, the letters should actually be a sort-of window to the picture underneath. 8. When you are done typing your word, click once on the Move tool icon in the tool pallette. Your word should become a selection. 9. Select Edit and drag down to Copy. 10. Select File and drag down to New. Photoshop should recognize how big your selection is and autoformat the size of your new image for you, so merely click on OK. 11. In the new image window, select Edit and drag down to Paste. visual rhetoric module 6 page 2

You might have to do some tweaking to optimize the image (e.g., adjust the background color, adjust the font size used). Your image should look something like the image to the left. 12. Save the image as yourlastname_word ACTIVITY 2: EXPERIMENTING WITH TYPE & CREATING A LOGO OR OTHER IDENTITY MARKER 1. The product of this activity is a logo or other identity marker based on letters of your name essentially, you will be creating a type treatment from your initials or some other combination/play on your name. Your purpose here is to demonstrate an ability to work with Photoshop and to design an eye-catching, appealing, interesting logo or other identity marker. Imagine this image as an anchor image for your web site, or to be integrated into a business card or letterhead. 2. Decide, first, what you want to create. Explore some examples. Research logo, identity, and branding design. Sketch some possibilities. 3. In Photoshop, select File and then select New. Size the new image based on the type and size of graphic you will create. NOTE If you plan to create something to use in print, you ll want to work in at least 300 dpi resolution to get a high-quality, print-friendly graphic. 4. To add your text, select the Text tool on your tool pallette (use the default Text tool the Horizontal Type Tool). 5. Use the Text tool submenu to select the font face you want to use and to select the text features (e.g., regular, bold, italic), text size, and font appearance (e.g., strong, smooth) you want to apply. Use the Color picker on the toolbar to set the text color. 6. Save your final graphic as yourlastname_identity.jpg visual rhetoric module 6 page 3

ACTIVITY 3: CREATING A VISUAL ARGUMENT 1. For this activity, focus on our international communication readings to choose a concept you want to focus on. Think about a concept or argument related to globalization that interests you. 2. Decide what your argument will be. As you select a topic, you might consider questions like: Is there an argument about globalization that you agree with and want to create a representation of? Is there an argument about globalization that you disagree with and want to create a representation of? What s going on in the world right now and how are these events being represented? Do you agree with the representation of the events? Of the people involved? 3. Once you ve decided what sort of argument you want to make, begin gathering and/or creating images to construct your argument. 4. Save the image as yourlastname_argue ACTIVITY 4: MAKING UGLY For the moment, let us say that ugly design, as opposed to classical design... is the layering of unharmonious graphic forms in a way that results in confusing messages (Heller, / ). The secret of ugliness consists not in irregularity, but in being uninteresting (Ralph Waldo Emerson). 1. The goal of this activity is to wrestle with the concepts put forth in Steven Heller s Cult of the Ugly and David Goines, Beauty (which we read the week before spring break). Your product will be an ugly image. It is up to you if you want to create something ugly from scratch, or to download an image or a few images and work with an already existing image. Creating deliberate ugliness isn t necessarily easy, especially when you re versed in good design principles (e.g., appropriate uses of blank space; smart thinking about contrast, repetition, alignment, proximity; attention to color). You ll have to think about what beauty is, of course, and how our notions of beauty in art, in design, etc., are constructed. You ll have to think about what ugly is, of course, and likewise how our notions of ugly are constructed. 2. Save the image as yourlastname_ugly.jpg visual rhetoric module 8 page 4

ACTIVITY 5: CREATING A PHOTO ILLUSTRATION 1. Download, scan in, or create an image of a magazine cover. Make OJ white. Have Carrie Bradshaw gain 100 pounds, or announce her 100th birthday. Send Martha back to jail. Reinstate Clinton as president. It s your call. 2. Save the image as yourlastname_illustration ACTIVITY 6: MATE A MOVIE 1. Respond to the worth1000 contest to mate a movie : Two or more movies, combined to make one much funnier movie. 2. Save the image as yourlastname_movie ACTIVITY 7: CREATE A SHIELD 1. Start at 2. Rather than creating a Photoshop shield, however, use your last name in the shield. 3. Save the image as yourlastname_shield visual rhetoric module 8 page 5

ACTIVITY 8: MASKING IMGAES 1. Download ghost and mirror from Images to Toy with on Angel 2. Open mirror and make sure it s a layer you can manipulate. 3. Open ghost and select it s contents. 4. In mirror, ctrl+shft+new and name the layer ghost >paste. 5. Order the mirror so it s over ghost. Select mirror>layer mask> reveal all. 6. Select a brush size and transparency in the tool menu and mask part of Mirror until the Ghost appears in it. 3. Save the image as yourlastname_masking.jpg ACTIVITY 9: MANIPULATING TYPE & LAYERS 1. Download an Olyphant and change the contents to transparent: layer>new>layer from background. 2. Use the brush tool to paint white over the area you ll type onto. 3. Use the type tool and warped text tool to comment on the image. Add more Text layers and build the image upward. ACTIVITY 10: REVRESE ENGINEERING ANALYSIS 1. Download any image that is rhetorically rich and heavily designed. 2. Reverse engineer the whole or features of it using the moves you ve learned so far. 3. Begin with a list of the moves/media the person seems to employ (e.g. nevoux font, perhaps morphed the first and last letters; webdings bent; graphic circle; graphic radient lines, a downloaded brush filling the circle, line art images, transformed and layered include girl, paint brushes, pallet). 4. Recreate half or all of the image using different color or content choices. TURNING IN YOUR WORK & GETTING CREDIT Upload all three of your files to the upload module 8 files here dropbox on our ANGEL site: jpg preferred. visual rhetoric module 8 page 6
