7 The main features of Sitecore for multilanguage sites include: A site can be managed for any number of cultures (for example, US English, UK English, etc.). You can define custom locale/language pairs to meet your specific needs. New languages can be added at any time without requiring changes to the platform. The content for each template field can be either the same across languages or specific to each language. For example, a company logo would be common to all languages, while the copy for the management bios may be different per language. Each language has its own version history. Includes the capability to do a bulk export of content which can be sent to an external translation agency and then imported back in when translation is completed. The built-in export/import process uses a standard XML file making it very portable. Allows user to view content side-by-side. Sitecore remains committed to ensuring best practices are adhered to when users build multiple languages. However, there are some steps which are dependent on the development teams and their processes which the Sitecore CMS is unable to enforce. The approach taken when implementing the website template files is one such scenario. As such, special consideration must be taken when developing templates to support multilingual content. There are strings that web developers and programmers may include directly into the templates or web applications for varying usages (e.g. alert messages, labels, etc.). When strings are hard-coded into your development assets (templates, client-side java script, back-end services, etc.) they are not immediately available for export during the translation process. This would result in a partial translation taking place and have mixed languages present on your website. While it may be acceptable to have English mixed with other languages on your websites (e.g. footer notices, legal statements, etc.) it is not the general case (e.g. registration forms, etc.) and should be avoided. These packages are sent directly to GPI via Web Services eliminating the need to manually share files. The GPI Translation Services Connector compiles your translations and adds them back to the correct location within Sitecore as soon as they become available. The following outlines the high-level steps involved when using the GPI connector: 1. Define Your Translation Package Translation packages are a set of Sitecore content items to be translated.
