Course Textbook R. W. Sebesta, Programming the World Wide Web, 7 th Edition, Addison Wesley, ISBN-13: , ISBN-10: Course Description Provides introduction to the infrastructure of the World Wide Web (WWW). Develops proficiency in creating static web pages. Includes these topics: client-server architecture, World Web Web, Internet protocols, Web document structure, XHTML tags, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Requires extensive hands-on laboratory exercises. 1 Credit. Prerequisites None. Course Objectives Develop static web pages using (X)HTML and CSS, that are at a fairly high level of sophistication in terms of their appearance. Develop the ability to respond to requests to modify Web pages (either in terms of their content, and/or their appearance) and maintain their quality. Nature of the Course In this course, we will be exploring the foundations of Web design and Web programming. We will be using (X)HTML and CSS to create basic Web pages. We will be writing all of the code for our Web pages by hand, from scratch in a text editor. The use of Dreamweaver or any other application that writes the code for us is not allowed in this course. This course will include readings, lectures, in-class discussions, in-class group exercises, in-class exams, homework activities, the creation of a website for your final project, and a presentation of your final project to your classmates and instructor.

It is very important to complete the assignments and projects on time because the next set of assignments and projects build on previously-learned skills and concepts. This will continue as the course progresses. Please contact me as soon as possible if you are having trouble or have questions or concerns. I am here to encourage and support you throughout this new adventure. We will work together to achieve your goals for this course. Student Outcome An ability to use current techniques, skills, and tools appropriate for immediate employment in computing technology and application fields. Grading Allocation Grades will be determined based on the following: Unit Exams (2) 20% Lab/Homework Assignments 30% In-Class Exercises 25% Final Project 20% Presentation of Final Project 05% Grading Guidelines The exams will be given in our lab, during our scheduled class time, on the days specified on our course calendar (which is at the end of this document). There will be no make-up exams. If you have a conflict, please make arrangements to take the exam early. The exams will not be given after their scheduled day or time. In-class exercises will only be given in our lab, during our scheduled class time. They will be given as appropriate according to the flow of our course and will not be announced beforehand. In-class exercises will be due at the end of the class time in which they are assigned and will not be given before or after such time. Homework assignment due dates will be stated on each assignment specification sheet when it is handed out. The final project and presentation guidelines will be handed out a few weeks into the semester. The project and presentation will be due towards the end of the semester, as specified on the guideline documents which will be handed out. Outright plagiarism will not be condoned. Students that duplicate projects submitted for grading will all receive an automatic "E" for the entire semester s grade. Refer to your student handbook on college policies. SUNY does not allow any miss-use of its system. A Student should not send any assignment files or test files to other students. Any student caught plagiarizing work from any source (Internet, or the library or any other source) will receive a failing grade for the entire semester. Plagiarism is using others' words, ideas, or programming code and claiming them as your own. Plagiarism will not be condoned and will result in a failing grade for the course. Cheating on an exam will be treated similarly. Also, misuse of the mail system, the Internet, or any file on the college system will result in a failing grade being given for the course.

Grading Scale Grade Quality Points Numeric Semester Average A and Above A B B B C C C D D D E.00 BELOW 60 Policy on Attendance and Conduct in Classroom Faculty Senate legislation mandates student attendance in all classes. Students who are unable to attend the examinations or meet deadlines for assignments on particular days due to religious beliefs, must contact me ahead and work out alternate arrangements. Students are expected to behave as reasonable adults, motivated to explore the subject matter with proper guidance from the instructor. Late arrivals and early departures disturb the entire class and should be avoided. As per Senate policy, students whose unexcused absences exceed 15 percent of the scheduled classes and laboratories may receive a lowered grade or failure at my discretion. Policy on Student Academic Dishonesty Context of policy for students: Academic dishonesty, cheating and other forms of misrepresenting others work as your own, such as plagiarism, are considered serious breaches of academic integrity and are major violations of the standards of ethical behavior that the College expects from all its students. When detected, as it often is, academic dishonesty can result in a range of disciplinary actions including failure on an assignment, failure of a course, or even Conduct Dismissal from the College. Records of disciplinary actions for dishonesty are kept and conduct dismissals are noted on College transcripts. The best rule is to assume that instructors expect all work (exams, papers, projects, etc.) submitted for grading to be entirely your own, done without collaboration. If the instructor allows or desires collaboration, you should assume that the instructor will make that clear in the assignment. If the instructor has not explicitly stated that collaboration is permitted, all work submitted should be entirely your own. Instructor s Late Policy You are expected to turn in assignments and complete projects and exams on time in order to be successful in this course. It is very hard to get caught up if you fall behind. It is important to note that the exams will be given in our lab, during our scheduled class time, on the days specified on our course calendar (which is at the end of this document). There will be no makeup exams. If you have a conflict, please make arrangements to take the exam early. The exams will not be given after their scheduled day or time. In addition, no work will be accepted after the last day of class.

Other course components, such as other activities or homework assignments, can be handed in up to three calendar days late with a late penalty of 5% per day that it is late. No work will be accepted more than three calendar days late and you will earn a zero for that assignment. Please stay on schedule with the course work and notify me in advance (or as soon as possible) if something arises that will prevent you from handing in your work on time. Disability Statement Students with documented disabilities may be entitled to specific accommodations. SUNY Brockport s Office for Students with Disabilities makes this determination. Please contact the Office for Students with Disabilities at or osdoffic@brockport.edu to inquire about obtaining an official letter to the course instructor detailing any approved accommodations. The student is responsible for providing the course instructor with an official letter. The faculty work as a team with the Office for Students with Disabilities to meet the needs of students with disabilities. Sexual Harassment Statement SUNY Brockport is committed to maintaining a learning environment free of sexual harassment and intimidation. Sexual harassment is unacceptable behavior, unlawful and intolerable. Students who feel they are being harassed should contact the Affirmative Action Office in Room 419 Allen Administration Building. Evacuation Policy All fire alarms, emergency voice notification system messages, etc., are to be taken seriously, especially in this time of heightened security awareness and the potential need to evacuate a building for other reasons such as an emergency response to a spill or other event. Evacuation of the facility is mandatory until the signal to reenter has been given by the Brockport Fire Department, University Police, or Environmental Health and Safety personnel. In the event of a fire alarm, please gather your belongings and calmly go to the nearest exit. Once you are outside the building, please walk across the enclosed walkway/bridge (over the railroad tracks) and gather at the end of the walkway (outside of the A.W. Brown building), where the class will gather together. If you cannot find the class group outside the A.W. Brown building, please stay away from the building until it has been cleared for reentry by the Fire Department, University Police, and/or College personnel. If you feel you may need assistance to exit the building, please notify me as soon as reasonably possible.

CIS 117 Final Project Specification Sheet Professional Portfolio Website Due Monday, November 24, 2014 Course: CIS Semester: Fall 2014 Instructor: Michele M. Barnard-DeCann Time: Monday Evenings from 6:35 8:35 p.m. The final project in this course will be to use XHTML and CSS to create a professional portfolio website that you will use while searching for internships and jobs. The website must be at least four pages and follow the three-column, liquid layout format (using percentages) that we have been using throughout our course. The entire website must be hand-coded, from scratch, using only a text editor. The use of software that writes the code for you, such as Dreamweaver, is not allowed at all for this project or in this course. Final Project Directions: Using the websites that we have created throughout our course as guides, create a basic website about yourself that you will use to promote yourself and your professional skills while you search for jobs. Create a main three-column, liquid layout Web page named index.html that tells a little bit about you, your education, your interests, and/or your career goals. Create a second three-column, liquid layout Web page that contains your professional skills and other information that is typically found on a resume. The main content section of this page needs to be in professional resume format. Please name this page skills.html (or something similar like resume.html). Create a third three-column, liquid layout Web page that lists or explains the different ways that people viewing your website can contact you. If you do not want to use your actual address and phone number for this assignment, you may use the main address and phone number of The College at Brockport. This contact page needs to contain a working form, such as the ones we have been creating in class using Google Docs. Please name this page contact.html. Create a fourth three-column, liquid layout Web page for your website. The fourth page can be a references page, an honors and awards page, a page describing your coursework at The College at Brockport, a page with samples of your work on it, or another appropriate Web page that adds professional information to your website. Please give this page an appropriate name.

Name: Please make sure that each page of your professional portfolio website contains the following elements: Doctype for XHTML Strict Appropriate title and appropriate Web page name Appropriate meta tags (charset, description, keywords, author) An external CSS for the website s formatting and styling Appropriate file paths for all images and links Working links from each page to all of the other pages (global navigation). Appropriate comments Any other website elements that we have discussed in class (lists, tables, etc.) as appropriate to your professional portfolio website s content and topic. Header div (with appropriate content) that uses percentages and CSS for the layout Left, right, and center divs (with appropriate content) that use percentages and CSS for the layout Footer div (with appropriate content) that uses percentages and CSS for the layout Note: A footer is recommended but not required for this assignment. Please make sure that each page of your professional portfolio website passes the W3C s validation service. Please include a screenshot of the validation results when you hand in your assignment. Please print out each page of your professional portfolio website (in the browser or as a screenshot) and all of your XHTML code. Please hand in all of these printouts. Please upload your entire professional portfolio website to your server space and include the link to view it in the documentation when you hand it in. Thank you.
