IDEAL DataCENTER Software Data Mining Features Short Application Note Status Jan 2015 Version 1 Introduction Handling and evaluating reports of big cabling projects can become quite confusing and time consuming. This short application note describes a set of features within the new IDEAL DataCENTER software (IDC) that helps users to quickly organise and manage test data from their cabling project. The following features are available to organise test data: 1) Listing special data 2) Grouping 3) Sorting 4) Filtering 5) Searching Page 1 of 9
1) Listing Special Data In IDC, you can arrange columns as you need and call up columns for special values that are of interest to you. A very common example is that users are interested in the worst crosstalk (NEXT) margins. In IDC, just call up the column chooser by right clicking on any column header and selecting the columns that you would like to see: Drag the column you are interested in to the desired position in the table: If you no longer require the column, select the column header and drag it away from the table. Page 2 of 9
2) Grouping Sometimes it may be interesting to group test data into different groups. As an example, you would like to know which test limits have been used for a specific project: Just drag the column of interest to the field above the columns that reads Drag column header here to group by that column Click on the group you wish to open. For example: CAT5E STP Perm shown above. To ungroup the view, drag the column back to the table or right click on the column and select Ungroup. Any columns in the table can be grouped together Some more examples below: Page 3 of 9
3) Sorting Columns can be sorted by ascending or descending values. Right click on the column header and select the appropriate option. In the example below, the table is sorted by Length Worst Value : This is the easiest way to get a quick overview of key performance parameters. You can quickly sort for NEXT, RL and length to get an overview of the worst performing links. Page 4 of 9
4) Filtering If the sorting function does not solve your requirements immediately, filtering of data is an extremely powerful tool to customise the display of your test data. There are several filtering options that can be applied and even combined. The most simple and straight forward filter is the Auto Filter Row. To invoke the Auto Filter Row, right click on the column header and chose Show Auto Filter Row. An additional filtering row will appear under the column header. In the new Auto Filter Row, you can enter any filtering criteria you are interested in. The example below shows filtering of the above table for all links that start with HWK. Page 5 of 9
Very similar to Excel, the Auto Filter Row can also sort for ranges of criteria. Just click on the small icon in the header and a selection pop up will appear. Click on (Custom) to invoke the pop up to select filtering ranges: The example above will filter out any links that are within 50 to 80m. You can filter by more than one criteria at a time using the method above. This works similarly to Excel. Please note that when doing so, you will apply the AND rule for the two or more criteria. Therefore only links that meet all the filter criteria will be displayed. If you want to apply the OR rule to your filtering criteria, IDC features a special filter editor. The OR filter is very useful if you quickly need to spot links that for example have very marginal performance or even fail. To invoke the filter editor, right click on the column header and click on Filter Editor. Page 6 of 9
Use the built-in editor to create custom data filters. The first criteria shown above lets the user select if an AND or OR filter is applied. Add filter criteria by clicking on the symbol. In the example below, the filter would select any cable with a NEXT margin <2dB or RL margin <3dB or any failing links: Applying this filter on the above database results in: Page 7 of 9
To remind you that a filter is enabled and also to quickly turn on/off the filter, the filtering rule is displayed on the bottom of the screen: 5) Searching Last, but not least, you can search in many of the database fields. To invoke the search function, right click on the column header and select Show Find Panel The Find Panel will appear right above the column headers. Enter any text, eg. link names, and click on Find In the database above, searching for ACME finds all links with company name ACME.. Page 8 of 9
