6 3 What s new in CES EduPack 2014? This section details all enhancements in the CES EduPack 2014 release, compared with the CES EduPack 2013 release. CES EduPack software New edition homepages, displayed on launch of the application and whenever a new database or edition is selected. Provides information on data available in the selected edition and direct access to online resources. Includes the following functionality: 1. Select a table menu displays all data modules available in the selected database. Changing the selected option updates the browse tree and subset information. 2. Filter by subset menu dispalys all subsets available for the selected table. Clicking on the thumbnail images updates the browse tree and subset information to reflect the selected option. More in-depth information on the active database is available by clicking on the i icon, next to the database name, at the top of the homepage. The Online menu options open a web browser and provide access to relevant information on the Teaching Resources Website (requires internet access) - Database Tour links to the online Browse video tutorial for the active database/edition. - Teaching Resources links to relevant teaching resources associated with the selected database/edition. - Student Resources links to the playlist and full set of online video tutorials for CES EduPack and FAQs for students. Clicking the icon next to Database selected returns the user to the Change/Choose Database screen. The homepage can also be accessed by selecting Home from the View menu on the main application toolbar. More engaging and intuitive introduction to the software easier for students to understand where to start. Highlights what subsets are available and what data they provide. Provides direct access to online resources appropriate for the selected database/edition. Updated version of CES Help, accessed from the Help button on the main application toolbar includes the following developments Greatly simplified structure with new visual homepage with four main options: Quick Start, Data & Tools, Case Studies and Useful Reference. Greater connectivity between the software help and the Teaching Resources Website. The following content is now only available online, with direct links from CES Help: Getting Started guides, Video tutorials, White Papers, Case Studies, and the online books CES InDepth and CES Concepts. Granta Design of 15
7 Easier to find topics of interest. Reduces the size of the installation footprint simplifying distribution to students. Ensures access to the most up-to-date documentation and tutorials. Enhanced usability the following new features facilitate use of the software: CES EduPack now fully respects Microsoft Windows TM number formatting, and displays the appropriate regional decimal separator and date format for all users. The location of records in the browse tree is displayed at the top of all datasheets, with hyperlinks to overview (or generic) records that appear in the tree path, providing additional information relating to the open datasheet. Graphs on datasheets are displayed by default. New style of control for specifying discrete values in Limit stages (e.g. Unacceptable, Limited Use, Acceptable, and Excellent for durability properties) occupies less screen space and provides greater visibility of what constraints have been selected. New capability to select/deselect all values in a discrete list in Limit stages particularly useful for advanced databases where you may want to exclude just a few options from a long list. Dropdown list also extends to fill the available screen space and width extends to length of longest option, simplifying the specification of selection criteria for discrete values. New Multi-Value Discrete (MVD) data type enables multiple values to be stored for a single property. For example, multiple regions can be specified for Global Availability, meaning that this data can be presented in a single dropdown menu, rather than as a series of check boxes. As for single value discretes, selecting multiple options in a Limit stage applies OR logic. For AND logic, each option should be specified in a separate Limit stage. Time taken by software to open and apply Limit stages has been reduced particularly useful when filtering large data modules, such as IDES Plastics in the Polymer Edition. Simplify the use of the software and enhance your user experience. CES EduPack Introductory Data Modules Level 1 & 2 databases (English, French, Spanish, and German) Enhancements to Level 1 & 2 databases the following updates have been made to these introductory databases: New, highly visual homepages provide information on data and subsets available, and direct access to online video tutorials and the Teaching Resources Website. Images of example products updated, with multiple images being provided for many materials captions also include source and reproduction information to facilitate their use in teaching materials where this is allowed. Granta Design of 15
8 Format of images updated and moved to top of datasheet. More engaging user experience. Higher visibility of available data in particular the durability and environmental properties in Level 2 databases. CES EduPack Advanced Data Modules Elements database The Elements database provides the fundamental crystallographic, mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of elements across the Periodic Table. The CES EduPack 2014 version includes a new interactive homepage that provides direct access to the detailed datasheets from the periodic table and, where applicable, provides the option to select from a list of available forms (isotrope, allotrope, phase, crystal structure). Provides direct link between the periodic table and the underlying data on individual elements. Supports the teaching of materials science courses, physics courses, or engineering courses that require more materials depth. Level 3 MaterialUniverse (applies to all Level 3 editions) New overview records, identified by a folder-datasheet icon, provide information on the key strengths, limitations, and uses for over 240 material classes accessed by double-clicking on the icon in the Browse tree or from the links in the record path displayed at the top of a datasheet: Covers the following material classes: ferrous, non-ferrous and precious metals, plastics, elastomers, glasses, ceramics, and natural materials. Stated strengths and limitations are relative to the materials peers (for example the overview record for PBT refers to differences with PET, PA, PC, etc.). Includes information on composition, processing, first commercial production, durability, and warnings on health hazards associated with the use of the material. Understand and explain why certain materials are used for particular applications. For example, the benefits of using PBT over PET. Provides an additional sanity check on the results of selection projects does the overview record for the identified material highlight any important limitations that have not been considered in the selection criteria? New processability attributes for metals and polymers ranks materials based on the ease by which a material can be manufactured by a specified process: Ranked on a four point scale: Excellent, Acceptable, Limited Use, and Unsuitable. Granta Design of 15
9 Covers 5 metal forming processes: casting, cold forming, hot forming, press forming, and deep drawing. Covers 3 polymer forming processes: injection molding, extrusion, and thermoforming. The design notes include a description of the ranking scale, and list key issues and considerations associated with the process. Allows materials to be filtered/screened based on processes that are commonly used for their manufacture. Provides information on the ease, or difficulty, of manufacturing a material by a particular process. Demonstrates the importance of considering manufacturing in the material selection process, and the influence it has on material choices. Updated Material prices new prices are available for all 3,900+ materials in MaterialUniverse. These have been generated using an enhanced version of Granta s price model. Use up-to-date prices, reflecting current differences between material types and classes. Apply in trade-off studies, e.g. cost vs mass, plastic vs metal. Coverage of bio-based polymers extended to include PTT (chemistry and properties similar to PET and PBT), filled, impact modified, flame retarded, and lubricated grades. 17 new grades: PLA: 4 unfilled, 2 glass fiber, 2 mineral, and 1 natural fiber filled grades. PTT: 2 unfilled, 3 glass fiber, and 2 glass fiber + PTFE filled grades. TPS: 1 plasticized grade (revised and updated). Provides extended coverage of bio-based polymers commonly used in structural and nonstructural applications. Supports the teaching of environmentally informed design. Updated datasheet layout includes the following: New General Information section that includes overview, designation, standards, tradenames, and typical uses (moved up from bottom of datasheet). General Properties section has been split into Price and Physical Properties. Fracture Toughness has been moved from Mechanical Properties to a new Impact and Fracture Properties section.
