DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY HONG KONG BAPTIST UNIVERSITY Prof. Q. Zhou GEOG1150/2015 Cartography Lab 5 Web Map Applications Objectives Access to spatial data as well as advanced mapping and spatial analysis over the Internet is becoming more common. In this lab, a review of two major online mapping tools will be presented, including a brief demonstration of how these tools might be used. After finishing the lab works, students should learn to: Create simple maps in Google Map and ArcGIS Online; Customize web maps with style, icons and symbols; Acquire online data from Google services and Living Atlas; Share the map via different ways; Guidelines 1. Logon to workstation using your GISLAB account. Google Map We will organize an activity in our department. Your supervisor has asked you to produce a web map which shows the location of the event venue, as well as locations of nearby restaurants/cafes. Then participants may know how to get to here, and where they can go during the activity break. Google Maps is a Web based service that provides detailed information about geographical regions and sites around the world. In addition to conventional road maps, Google Maps offers aerial and satellite views of many places. In some cities, Google Maps offers street views comprising photographs taken from vehicles. 2. Start Chrome (press the Windows Start button > All Programs > Google Chrome), navigate to Google Map ( 3. The site will detect your system locale and display in the language that matches your setting (i.e. Traditional Chinese in our case). Please change the language to English by pressing the menu, then selecting 語言 (language) and choosing English (United States) (or other language you understand).

(if you understand Chinese you may skip this step.) 4. Sign in to Google services using your Google account. (HKBU is using Google services, you may logon to Google using your HKBU SSOid and password). 5. Press the Show Your Location icon (on the bottom right corner of the map) to grant Google Map the right to know your location (it may not be useful in our case but will provide benefits when you provide locational based services in the future). 6. Press the menu then select Your places. Then select MAPS > CREATE MAP

A new tab will be opened and named Untitled map. 7. Change the name of the map to be GEOG2015 Lab 5 Web Map Application (Google Map) (by clicking the text Untitled map on the upper left corner). 8. Zoom in to the level that the map shows the Shaw Campus and Baptist University Road Campus (Shaw Tower at North most and Student Residence Hall at South most). If you cannot locate the campus, try to search Baptist University Road Campus. Type your search strings here

9. We already have a layer named Untitled layer. We may use it to show the location of our department. Change the layer name to be HKBU GEOG (by clicking the name of layer, or pressing and select Rename this layer). next to it The press the Add marker button on toolbar. Add a marker on the top of Academic and Administration Builing (approximate location is , ). Toolbar Name and descriptions marker Name: Geoinformatics Laboratory Descriptions: AAB1214, Academic and Administration Building, 15 Baptist University Road Click [Save] to save this marker. 10. We would like to add a photo in this marker so reader may know what here looks like. Select the marker (if you have not done so) and press Add image or video button. Upload the photo in K:\geog2015\lab5\photo geog.jpg. Then press [Save].

11. Change the base map to be Simple Atlas by clicking the arrow in front of Base map and select Simple Atlas, which is simpler and more suitable for us (the default base map contains markers of some cafés, which may confuse the audiences when we put more markers on map later). 12. Add a new layer. Change the name to Suggested Nearby Café and Canteen. 13. Add markers for the following selected cafés and canteens in Shaw campus and BU Road campus. Name: Description: Name: Description: Name: Description: Name: Description: Name: Description: icafé Level 3, The Wing Lung Bank Building for Business Studies Renfrew Restaurant Level 2, David C Lam Building Main Canteen Level 5, Academic and Administration Building BU Fiesta Ground Floor, Student Residents Hall Bistro Bon Ground Floor, Ng Tor Tai International House Name: Staff and Alumni Lounge Description: Level 1, Jockey Club Academic Community Centre (please put the marker on Chan Wu Wan Kwai SCE Tower as Google Map does not show Jockey Club Academic Community Centre)

icafé Renfrew Restaurant Main Canteen Bistro Bon Staff and Alumni Lounge BU Fiesta In case you place a marker on an incorrect location, right click it and select Delete, then put the new marker on the correct location. 14. We should change the icon of the cafés and canteens so readers may distinguish them with our event venue on map. Select the Renfrew Restaurant (in David C Lam Building) and click the Style icon. Then click the [More icons] button Search the café icon by typing cafe in Filter (it should be in Place category), then click on the icon and press [OK] to use it.

You may consider to use another color to represent café and canteen so they can be much distinguishable. 15. Do the same job for all cafés and canteens EXCEPT icafé and Staff and Alumni Lounge. At this stage you should found the used icon will appear in Other icons section, which may save you some time for searching icon. 16. For the icafé and Staff and Alumni Lounge, we know they are in fact Pacific Coffee and Starbucks. They are famous brands and we decide to use their logos as the icons on map. Select icafé and change its style, press [More icons] button, this time select [Custom icon]. We do not have Pacific Coffee s logo on hand, so this time select Google Image Search, type Pacific Coffee to search image via Google. Choose the appropriate logo (the first one should be fine), click [Select] then [OK] to use it. Only select images that you have confirmed that you have the license to use. Try to use the same way to change the icon of Staff and Alumni Lounge (to Starbucks).

17. We nearly finish our map. However, your supervisor has asked you to add the direction from the nearest railway station (Kowloon Tong) to the event venue so the participants may come by themselves. Select the HKBU GEOG layer firstly, then click the Add directions button on toolbar. A new layer will be added. Change the name to Direction from Kowloon Tong Station to event venue. Moreover, change the mode of transportation to be Walking. A means start and B means destination. Obviously we need to set both manually here. Set Kowloon Tong Station as A and Geoinformatics Laboratory as B Once you set A and B, the direction will be generated automatically and marked as blue line in your map. You can drag A or B manually on the map if you think the location(s) point on the map is/are not correct. 18. At this stage the map is ready to be published. First you may have a Preview to check if the map is okay.

There are several way that you can share your maps with your intended audiences. i. Print the map out (normally it is not the best way as electronic media may be more environmental friendly and provide extra benefits); ii. Export the map to a KML file (you or the audiences may import it into Google Earth or other earth browser programs. Pay attention that the base map will not be embedded in the KML file); For ArcGIS for Desktop, the ArcGlobe application can be used to open the KML file. iii. Embed the map in your website (you need to set the map as public, refer to point iv); (you may do the first three things via the Google Map menu). iv. Share the map with other users via link; For sharing the map and setting rights, click the Share button. Two things you need to define when you try to share your map: 1. Who can access your map? (click the Change next to Who has access and you may define the access right of your map to private or public). You must set the map to be Public on the web in case you want to embed it in your website. 2. What is/are the rights that assign to the audiences? Do you allow the audiences to edit/change your map? Or they can just view your map?

In case you just want to share your map with specified persons, you may set the access to be Private (i.e. Off in Link sharing), then invite people to view by entering their addresses or names, and notify them via s. 19. That is it. You can close the tab once you finish your work. You can access to your map again by visiting Google Map, sign in using your account, go to menu and select Your Places > Maps. The data is stored on cloud, which means you can access to your map anywhere in case the workstation is connected to Internet and Google. ArcGIS Online As a member of a study group in subject Population of Hong Kong, your classmates have asked you to prepare a map that shows the trends of male and female population change in different districts between 2001 to You certainly have the skills and technique to produce this map using ArcGIS for Desktop. However, your supervisor mentioned that he likes the concept of sharing, and encourage you to share your map on web rather than print it out. Therefore you decide to use ArcGIS Online to make this map.

ArcGIS Online is an online, collaborative web GIS that allows you to use, create, and share maps, scenes, apps, layers, analytics, and data. You get access to Living Atlas of the World, apps, and ESRI s secure cloud, where you can add items and publish web layers. 20. Keep using Chrome (or using other web browser you like). Navigate to Click Sign In, then select Sign in with ENTERPRISE ACCOUNT in the Sign In box. Type our organization s URL (HKBUGEOG.maps.arcgis.com) and press [CONTINUE]. Use the account information provided by your tutor to sign in. You will be asked to change your password and set a security question once you signed in. Do so before you progress.

22. We still have nothing in our homepage. So Click Map to create a map by yourself. 23. Select Add > Browse Living Atlas Layers. In the Browse Living Atlas Layers dialog box, search for Hong Kong Population. Select the Population distribution by sex in 2006 and add the layer to map as layer. Then close the dialog box. 24. Move the cursor over the layer title Population distribution by sex in 2006 you should find icons for different operations: more options show legend change style filter show table

25. Press the [show table] icon to view the layer s attribute table. Question: What attributes are stored in the attribute table? The press the [show legend] icon to list the legend Question: Which attribute is symbolized in our current map? 26. We would like to symbolize quantitative data in our exercise here, i.e. male and female population in Firstly we will try a simpler example. Press the [change style] icon, then chose to show the attribute Male Question: Check step 2, what drawing styles are available when we choose Male to show? Select the Counts and Amount (Color) drawing style. Press the [Options] button on it. In the Options pane, tick the Classify Data box, use the default method Natural Breaks to classify the data into 4 classes. Press [OK] to return to Change style pane, then [DONE] to finish our map. 27. Not difficult at all. Then we may try a more complicate one the comparison between male and female population in different districts in Press the [change style] icon again. This time click the Add attribute link, and add Female as the second attribute.

Question: Check step 2, what drawing styles are available when we choose to show Male and Female at the same time? Choose Predominant Category & Size, then press the [OPTIONS] button on it. You can see you Questions: What does the color of the symbol represents here? What does the size of the symbol represents here? Keep using the default settings here. Press [DONE] and [DONE] and return to Table of Contents. 28. Press [More Options] icon and select Rename, change the name of layer to be Male and Female population comparison in Use the similar approaches as on steps 23 28, add the Population distribution by sex in 2001 layer into the map and change its symbology. Rename it as Male and Female population comparison in (Hint: you need to search population sex to find out the appropriate layer in Living Atlas). 30. Move the Male and Female population comparison in 2006 layer upward by selecting [More Options] icon then selecting Move up (or by dragging and dropping). Question: Refer to the map, can you point out two of the most significant changes when comparing male and female population in 2001 to 2006? 31. When we finish our map, we can save it by pressing Save and select Save. Supply a meaning title and some keywords/tags to your map. Then press [SAVE MAP] to save it in your folder.

32. Once you saved your map, you can share your map with other audiences through different methods. Press Share. A link of your map is already created for you to share. Here you can choose sharing your map to your organization only or to public. If you want to embed your map in a website, you need to share it to the Everyone(public). Tick Everyone (public), a warning will appear, read it carefully and press [OK]. You may consider to share the map on facebook or twitter as well. 33. Apart from share the map via a link, you may create a web app to show it to public. Press the [CREATE A WEB APP] button.

In computing, a web application or web app is a client server software application in which the client (or user interface) runs in a web browser. In ArcGIS Online the concept is similar. By leveraging a configurable app and choosing a few options, you offer your users a focused experience for interacting with your map. Being clear about who is in your audience and how they will use the map can help you select the best configurable app to convey the message you want to your audience. There are plenty of configurable apps that you can choose. You may select base on your purposes. Here we choose the Basic Viewer (should be the first one). The press [CREATE WEB APP] to create the app. Before you create the app, you may change it title, tags, etc. If you accept the settings you made before, just press [DONE].

After configuring your app, it will go to this screen. Here you can edit your map app. For example, edit your data in Web Map, change the title and theme, select /deselect tools in toolbar, etc. Here we do not touch anything in this stage, just press [SAVE AND VIEW] to save our app and check the outcome. On the next screen you can see how your web app will appear. 34. Press [CLOSE] and you will go to the Item Description page for your app. Here you can change the app s summary, description, access and use constraints, etc. Moreover, a URL is provided at the bottom right corner of this page. You may use this URL to share your web app to other people (depends on your sharing setting). You may use the Google URL Shortener ( to create an URL for your app which is shorter and easier to be memorized. 35. Click My Contents (on the top). You should find all your saved map(s) and map app(s) listed. Here you should have one web map and one web mapping application. Next time when you sign in again, you can directly go to My Contents to locate and continue your works (if not yet finished or need amendment).

36. Okay, that would be sufficient for you at this stage and we may stop here. Before you leave, firstly sign out from ArcGIS Online (select Your Name > Sign Out). Then close all browser windows and other application windows. Lastly turn off your workstation before you leave. ArcGIS Online Help can be reached by selecting (Your Name) > Help. Moreover, comprehensive training opportunities (free or paid) include training seminar and web course can be found via (Your Name) > Training. ArcGIS Online requires a subscription. In order to access all the capabilities of ArcGIS Online, your organization needs to purchase an annual subscription. In case you leave your study program here, you may not be able to use ArcGIS Online in our organization.
