Section 1 Adding an Experience This section demonstrates the steps involved in adding an experience to your eportfolio. 1. Click the Student eportfolio link in the Student eportfolio portlet on the Services page in QUT Virtual. 2. Click the Build and Release your eportfolio link on the Student eportfolio main menu (click either the title or the icon). 3. Under the Experiences tab, click on the Nursing Competencies skill set. Click the + symbol beside the relevant Competency to receive more information about that particular Competency. Page 1
4. When you click on the Competency, the Experiences box will appear on the right hand side. The titles of previously entered experiences will be visible in the Menu Box. You can highlight a title to edit the experience. 5. To enter a NEW Experience, click the NEW button. The Add New Experience box will appear underneath. Enter an appropriate title, then enter the details of your experience in the fields provided. Page 2
Related Files You can use the Related Files section to link to files associated with the experience you are recording (NB You will first need to upload these files to your digital storage space using the QUT Virtual File Manager see Section 2 of this handout for instructions). (It is not essential to relate a file to every Experience.) To add a related file, click the SELECT button. File Selector will open in a new window. In File Selector, select the relevant file and click the SELECT button. Page 3
The File Selector window will close, and the filename you selected will appear in the Related Files field in the Add New Experience box. 6. Click the SAVE button to save the experience in your eportfolio. The new experience will be added to the list in the Experiences box. It will also be added to the experiences count in the Nursing Competencies List. Page 4
7. To print a copy of your experience, click the PREVIEW button. This will open your experience in a new window. Click the Print link in the top left-hand corner of the preview window. Page 5
Section 2 File Manager and Artefacts This section demonstrates the steps involved in using File Manager to upload files for use as Student eportfolio artefacts. An artefact is a document that supports an experience or provides evidence of your skills or achievements. QUT has provided you with 512MB of digital storage space for this purpose. Uploading files to the storage area 1. Navigate to the File Manager. There are two ways of doing this: a) Click the QUT File Manager link in the Student eportfolio portlet on the Services page in QUT Virtual. OR b) Click the QUT Virtual File Manager link on the Student eportfolio main menu (click either the title or the icon). Page 6
2. Click the File Manager tab. 3. Click the UPLOAD button. 4. In the Upload File window, click the Browse button. 5. Select the file you would like to upload and click the Open button. (Note that you can select only one file at a time.) Page 7
6. The file name will appear in the Upload File form. Click the UPLOAD button to upload the file to your QUT digital storage space. 7. The filename will now appear in the list of files uploaded. Click the Close browser window link in the Upload File window. At this point, you have successfully uploaded your file to the storage area. The file will remain here until you delete it at some future point. In order to present the file to a viewer you need to Relate it to an Experience or present it as an Artefact. To add this file as an Artefact to your Student eportfolio, you will need to work through the steps in the following section. Page 8
Section 3 Adding an Artefact This section demonstrates the steps involved in adding an artefact to your eportfolio. An artefact is a document that supports an experience or provides evidence of your skills or achievements. 1. Click the Student eportfolio link in the Student eportfolio portlet on the Services page in QUT Virtual. (See Section 1 for diagram) 2. Click the Build and Release your eportfolio link on the Student eportfolio main menu. (See Section 1 for diagram) 3. Click the Artefacts tab. 4. Click the NEW button. The Add New Artefact box will appear on the right. Enter an appropriate title, then enter the details of your artefact in the fields provided. To link to the file you want to include as a Student eportfolio artefact, you can either enter the file s URL in the URL field or select the file from those you have uploaded to your QUT digital storage space via File Manager. Page 9
To select the file from your QUT digital storage space, click the SELECT button next to the File field. This will open File Selector in a new window. In File Selector, select the relevant file from the list and click the SELECT button. Page 10
The selected filename will appear in the File field. 5. Click the SAVE button to save the artefact in your eportfolio. The new artefact will be added to the list in the Artefacts box. Page 11
Section 4 eportfolio Views If you would like to make your eportfolio accessible to other people, you can do so by creating and releasing an eportfolio View. This section demonstrates how to create an eportfolio View from the experiences and artefacts you have added to your Student eportfolio Click the Student eportfolio link in the Student eportfolio portlet on the Services page in QUT Virtual. (See Section 1 for diagram) 2. Click the Build and Release your eportfolio link on the Student eportfolio main menu. (See section 1 for diagram) 3. Click the eportfolio Views tab. Try to choose a non-generic title that will distinguish your eportfolio from others in a list (e.g. John Brown s eportfolio is preferable to My eportfolio or eportfolio ). Page 12
6. Click Save. The title will appear on the left hand side of the screen with a +/- beside the title. Click on the +/- and you will see a list of steps that you need to carry out in order to include elements of your eportfolio into this particular View. NB: Manage Experiences refers to the Generic Skill set NOT to the NP Competencies 7. Choosing which Experiences to include Click Manage Faculty Capabilities to access all the Experiences you have entered against the Competencies. You will see on the right all the Competencies are listed in the menu box. The number beside each Competency indicates the number of Experiences you have for that Competency. Click on the Competency title then Submit in order to choose the Experiences for this View. 8. When you have clicked Submit you will see the titles of ALL the Experiences you have entered for that particular Competency. Now you need to select the ones you want to include in this View. You need to do this for each of the Competency areas. Click the Competency you want to include and then Submit. (You NEED to do this for each Competency, to choose the Experiences for this View) Page 13
Click to highlight the title of the Experience you wish to include. Click the arrow to move the Experience to the Selected box. Page 14
9. Choosing your Artefacts Click Manage Artefacts page The titles of ALL the Artefacts you have in your eportfolio will appear in the menu box on the right. You need to highlight the title you want to include and then move it across to the Selected box and Save to include this chosen Artefact in this View of your eportfolio. Click to highlight the Title of the Artefact you want to include and then click on the arrow to mave it to the Selected box. Click here Click to Save Managing your Introduction 10. Before you release or show your eportfolio to your audience you need to personalise the Introduction page. The QUT eportfolio comes with a built in default Introduction for display purposes. NEVER use the default settings for your personal portfolio. You always need to position your reader/viewer and introduce your eportfolio in a meaningful way. To do this click Manage Introduction page from the menu. Click Type your Introduction text here and click Save. Page 15
Preview your View 11. Click the + symbol next to the View title to open the View management options. To preview your View, click the Review and Preview pages link. 12. The Review and Preview pages box will appear on the right. Click the Preview <your view title> link. 13. This will open a new window containing a preview of your eportfolio View. Click the Experiences tab to preview your experiences, and the Artefacts tab to preview your artefacts. Note that you can access a printer friendly version by clicking the Printer friendly version link in the top right hand corner of the screen. Page 16
14. Note also that you can edit your experiences and artefacts text from within the preview screen by clicking on the Edit Mode link, then clicking on the edit button beside the element you want to edit. When you have finished checking your View, click the Return to Views link. Page 17
Section 5 Releasing your eportfolio to others This section will show you how to release an eportfolio View. When you release an eportfolio View to someone, you grant them permission to access selected elements of your eportfolio. It is a good idea to preview your eportfolio View prior to releasing it, and to check that the information you have included is appropriate for the intended audience. 1.
